Speaker
Andrew Hello, fellow watch lovers, nerds, enthusiasts, or however you identify. This is the 1420 podcast with your host, Andrew, and my good friend Everett. Here, we talk about watches, food, drinks, life, and other things we like. Everett, how are you?
Everett I'm all right. I'm good. I'm better than all right. I'm good. This feels a little, I'm feeling a little, a little distraught.
Andrew And lonely.
Everett And lonely. You're not here. I can see you. I can see you, but, but you're not here. And then you play with your microphone during the intro. And that made me up. That made me feel sad.
Andrew Well, I played with it cause it was loud. So I didn't turn it down.
Everett Uh, no, I'm good, man. Uh, I just did my, um, hour.
Andrew Yeah. For social distancing, you know?
Everett Yeah, that's right. Well, so we were originally together going to go live with Justin of Monta watches. Um, on his, he's been doing a series of Instagram live and governor Brown issued this, uh, shelter in place order this week. And also you talk to meth heads and crack addicts every day. And it felt like maybe you should not come into my house. Maybe, maybe I shouldn't. Yeah. Maybe you should stay in your own damn house.
Andrew Yeah. In fact, just the people I love. in my immediate family, because you will always be there for me. That's right. Keep you got to keep you quarantined and safe. Risk exposure to, you know, immediate family. And here I am.
Unknown And here I am.
Everett Yeah, so I recorded with Justin. That was fun. We were in bow ties.
Andrew You were. I was really bummed to not be able to don a bow tie and jacket today.
Everett We were in bow ties. I tied my own bow tie, which is, it's always, it's one of those things I've done it a number of times, but I have to relearn how to do it.
Unknown Yeah.
Everett And there's that moment of frustration where you're like, oh yeah, there it is. Yeah. Yeah. Uh, so yeah, that was fun. Did that.
Andrew Um, cause there's that moment of frustration is like, there's a sweet spot. There's a single like emotion when you're tying that knot that if you miss it, you miss it. You're starting over. But when you get it, it's just right.
Unknown That's right.
Andrew And it's that, it's that like sweeping over and folding motion and it's, it's like timing and it, it can get a little bit, a little bit frustrating.
Everett You have to have the right tension. So once you, you cross them over and then you build that first half of the bow, you build that first half of the bow. And then in that moment where you build the first half of the bow and you pull it forward, you have to have the tension, right? If the tension is not fairly close to right, right there, You're going to have a mess. It falls apart. It falls apart. So Andrew, it's your birthday.
Andrew It is my birthday.
Everett 21. Fantastic. So you can drink legally now.
Andrew Finally, finally. Cause you're the 40 half of the 40 and 20 team.
Everett It's not funny. It's not funny.
Andrew I mean, I'm not the 20 half. You have more hair than me. That's a little
Everett Way, way more hair. You've gone the opposite direction of me.
Andrew Well, it's also falling out. That's the thing. I cut my hair a little bit shorter than usual once, and I saw all the thin spots poking through, and they were very exposed. So it was just time to do away with it. I didn't want to keep fighting the losing battle of how can I cover this bald spot.
Everett But you know, it looks good though. I mean, you've got a well-shaped head, so.
Andrew Yeah, I am lucky to have a reasonably well-shaped head to have short hair. And for some reason, I don't tan, but the skin on my head, like my scalp, matches quickly to the rest of my body. Sure. So it doesn't look like I'm just freshly shaven. Sad. And that's also because I don't tan well. I'm just basically the same white color. Always, everywhere.
Everett You know, I've gone the opposite direction since I've sort of been quote-unquote out of the army, although uncertain. That's an uncertain status, as always. But as I've been out of the army, I've just stopped cutting any of my hair. Yeah, it looks good.
Andrew You're looking very lumberjack-y. Very Kris Kristofferson.
Everett Straight hair suit. Mm-hmm. Yeah. Straight hair suit. It's kind of fun. I haven't had this much hair ever, I mean, ever in my life. I mean, top of my head. My hair on the top of my head has probably been longer than this as a ute. Uh, but certainly not as an adult. And then the beard, I, and I think the beard's coming in. It's, you know, I was nervous about it when I started, when I first made the decision, I'm not going to cut my beard. I thought, well, it's probably going to get annoying because it's not going to be what I expect it to be. Um, but that's not been the case. It's, it's coming in fucking good.
Andrew It is. You're going to get, you're getting pretty close to needing some shaping.
Everett You know, this is relatively shaped. I'm sort of keeping it in shape. I've definitely trimmed as I went. Okay. But you know, whatever. I'm an attorney. So at some point it's going to be like, all right, I'm going to court. I have to actually manage this thing.
Andrew I have to look like a real adult today.
Unknown Right.
Everett That's right. That's right. How are you? How's everything at home? How's, uh, how's work?
Andrew It's going, you know, we're all just social distancing and, um, So that means, you know, the kid is home from school, which is funnish. Um, that's a lie. I mean, I mean, it is what it is, right? No one's going to work. No one's going to school. I go to work at night. So when they're, when they're in bed is like when I get my, my break and then I sleep during the day. And it's just, it's a, it's been a, a trying week and some change couple of weeks. That we've been social distancing here in Oregon. And hopefully it pays off because all this being for not would, would be really frustrating, but generally speaking, we're all doing pretty well. You know, there's, there's been no murders in my house. Um, but we're all, yeah, we're just, we're just plugging away and making this as good of an experience as we can.
Everett You know, and apologies in advance, our audio is going to be different, right? It's going to be different while we're not together. We're probably going to figure out a little bit better system for next week's show. But this week, it's going to be weird and that's, it is what it is. And so we ask you just to sort of be patient with us as we, as we figure out how to do this in this new world, right? It's, times are a changing, as they say. So we ask you guys to be patient with us and We'll continue to put out the best content we can, and we've always been of the opinion that the content, the words we say, are more important than the quality of those words. But we try to do both things, and we've been pretty aggressive about that maintenance of our audio quality and the listening experience. Here we are. We're going to record for you guys for another hour and 15 or 20 minutes as we normally do. And we'll get you a show. Show must go on as Freddie Mercury might say.
Andrew And it shall go on with or without great audio.
Everett It must. It must. Are we going to talk about watches? Sort of. We're talking about watches. I think, I think we should.
Andrew We're talking about watches. We should at least, you know, spare everyone to start catching up. Cause it's weird to not see you.
Everett It is weird. You know what? When you come over, when you come over every week, at least once a week, I hug you. I hug you. And then we talk and you talk to Kim and we catch up.
Andrew Uh, that's weird not to have that. I know. I don't get to see the kids. I know. It's a bummer.
Everett So do you want to tell us what we're talking about today?
Andrew So today, today we started with a question prompt. And the question prompt is, prompt question, prompt, prompt, prompt is, so you got a grand, so you got a grant. Yeah. And it became especially relevant because we started talking about this about three days before the federal government started talking about direct to taxpayer checks. And then they started talking about amounts and everything. And we texted back and forth that, Oh my gosh, this might be reality. This might, the world we live in may actually provide us with a thousand dollars with which to do whatever we want.
Everett Right. Right. So I'm not going to get that money. Are you going to get that money? I don't think so. I'm not going to get that money. Almost certainly. I'm not getting that money.
Andrew Even if that money comes to my house, I don't think I'm getting that money.
Everett Yeah, no, I'm almost certainly not
Andrew Yeah, but you know, no, I actually think that actually just came into the family room that I'm in and said, Oh, you're not getting that money. Yeah, just a really emphatic, even if it comes to my house, it's not gonna be $1,000 for watches. But for some of you out there who are listening to us, it could be $1,000 for watches. So that being said, we set some parameters. We set two conditions, we each came up with two lists. The first list being a starter kit for those of you who have been interested in getting the watches kind of want to build a build a little bit of a watch collection. We wanted to grow that a little bit bigger than our three watches for 600 idea premise series, if you will. But then also what are we going to do with a thousand dollars? Like what are, what are Everett and Andrew going to do for with their thousand dollars in the way of watch purchases? So all that being said, anything else? You want to add before we start diving into this list?
Everett No, you know, I don't think so. You know, the, the, the bottom line is our, our parameters are really, we're really limited. We've been in the past. We've been very deliberate about setting rules. Um, you know, we can't do this. You can't do that. And some of that is cause we wanted to do new stuff. We didn't do that. We said no rules. You don't have to buy watches. You don't have to buy a certain amount of watches. Uh, you just have to spend a thousand dollars on watch shit. Yeah. Watch stuff, as it were. So, um, and, and, and that applied to both that applied to both our, um, beginner's kit, right? So if you have, you're starting with nothing, uh, and to our own and to our own kits, right? If, you know, you sent me, it was a safe, uh, it was a safe. It looked like it stored probably 40 watches. 40 watches was the number. I assume that was like a $40,000 safe. Yeah, probably. You know, we don't we don't know because it said email for pricing, right? And if you got to ask, but but theoretically, you know, you could spend this on watch storage, right? You don't need to buy a watch. So no parameters. You've got 1000 bucks. How do you get started? I think our beginner lists are where the goods are.
Andrew So that's where the goods really are.
Everett That's where the goods are. And then in terms of what we'd get personally, that's sort of less, maybe less immediately interesting, but also has some interest. So why don't you start? I think we should do this segmented. So we'll do your entire list. We'll do my entire list. And when I say our lists, I mean our beginner lists. And then towards the end, we can sort of rap about what we'd personally do. But why don't you start with your beginner list? Where are you at?
Andrew So here's my starting out list. And when I framed it, I did it exactly like what we were talking about. This is somebody who's just got a thousand dollar check come in the mail. There's somebody who wants to get into watches and needs all the goods. So first and foremost, my absolute first thing that I went to was a very inexpensive watch repair toolkit. Being a spring bar tool, being a bracelet sizing tool, a case back remover, demagnetized screwdriver, some spring bars. And I found one on the Amazon. It's by a company called the Vastar. Vastar. Yeah, yes. They're one of the players. Yeah, it's a 17 molar kit. It comes in like a little, a little nylon folding toolkit, box bag carrier deal. But it's got all the things you need to start. And it's, they're going to be by no means the, the kind of tools that last for 100 or 200 uses, but they're going to get you started. They're going to be enough to start switching out your straps and an idea for the side, like the things you don't like about these tools to inform your purchases on the next one. Cause what I found with my super inexpensive springboard toolkit is that I don't, I am having used yours also. I don't like long ones. I know you can get more leverage on it, but I like it to be a little bit smaller, a little bit shorter.
Everett Yeah, I've heard that about you, actually. You're more of a girth. Always. You're girth, not necessarily length.
Andrew Yeah. Tunican is my ideal size and shape. So this is going to get you started. It's going to provide you all the tools that you need to make the very entry-level changes that you're going to want to make to your watches, whether it be batteries, resizing your own bracelets, changing out your straps and bracelets, in a way that's not going to destroy your watch because you're taking a steak knife in the spring bars. So we've got $16.99 down. Next up, something that I don't think, I don't know if you think, people think about it when you start thinking about watch ownership, is you need something to put all your straps in. So I have a couple boxes, like shoe box shaped boxes. They're not shoe boxes, but they're that shape that all my straps and extra bracelets and all that nonsense go into. So when you're first getting started out, what I went with was a 16 inch grab and go gray toolbox for $18 and 47 cents. It's got a tray on the top where if you're, where your nylon bag tears, the zipper breaks, whatever, you can put all your tools in there. You can put your extra batteries, your extra spring bars, all your extra junk in there in the tray and beneath you can store all of your straps. And I think that's a really important thing. To get all your watch stuff in one place for every other hobby that anybody has. They've got their storage thing for you. We've got our tackle boxes for fishing and I've got my big hunting totes for hunting. Everything comes with cases. Watches don't really come with cases that are for storage other than watches. So we've got this toolbox for all your accessories and tools for your watches.
Everett And, and you're gonna, we're going to have links. We're going to have show notes. You're going to provide links to all this stuff.
Andrew Yes. Yeah. Fantastic. No, I'm going to make, I'm going to make you Google them. You're going to have to find, you're going to have to find them because I'm also giving prices. So you're going to have to like search gray toolbox and find one that's $18 and 47 cents that matches my description. I'm sorry. I'm just, I'm just not going to put the effort in this week.
Everett Coronavirus, man. Coronavirus. Show notes, show notes pending. My, my dog Andrew got show notes.
Andrew So, We're down $35.46. Okay.
Everett So now we've got, we've got the ability to repair. We've got the ability to do tweaks and repairs and changes. We've got a place to put all our shit because that becomes important quickly. Very quickly. Quickly becomes important. Now what?
Andrew Now we're getting into the good stuff. First watch, we're going to go with the Orient Mako. Coming in at $119 and you all know why. I love this watch.
Everett And this is a Mako, this is a Mako 2.
Andrew Is that right? Yeah. The Mako 2 coming in at $119. And we've got, uh, yeah, the Mako 2, $119 on Amazon. It, it, the price I feel like is getting better. I feel like I paid more than $119 for this watch, but we don't need to talk about the watch. What I want to talk about is the things that we're going to buy alongside the watch. Because we've got all this extra space, when we're not talking about just $600, we've got things to buy and fill out a well-rounded and go-anywhere, do-anything watch collection. So we're going to get a couple straps to go along with this watch. We're going to get a black shiznit. The seatbelt Toxic Nato shiznit. Those are ringing in at $31.99 these days, and I've got to tell you, these are some of my favorite straps they're they're soft they're comfortable coming in at 22 millimeters the the natos are a little bit of a struggle for me because they feel so wide there's no taper to them but that being said you want to get some natos for this watch because this watch looks good on and off the bracelet so my thinking for this is you're going to get a relatively inexpensive watch that looks good that's got all the features you want out of a professional dive watch that you can throw on a nylon strap whereas a weekend banger, or you can put it on leather, or something I'm gonna get to in a minute, and have as kind of a nice during the week watch, nice option for a during the week watch. Next up, we're gonna go with the Barkin Jacks.
Everett And the Mako you link to comes on a bracelet. Yeah. Yeah. So you've got a bracelet, now we've got a black, now we've got a black NATO.
Andrew Yep, we've got a black NATO, which it looks so good on a black NATO. It looks really good on an orange NATO too, but we're gonna keep it conservative so that you can build out from here. This is going to be your foundational. Each watch we're going to pick is going to have some options in the way of shoes for it that can take you from any environment that you're going to be in. So first up, we've got the toxic shades that we just talked about. Next up, we're going to go a gray NATO and we're going to go with a different brand. Reason being, as I was building out this list, I wanted to create as much diversity as possible because all these strap companies have their own thing that they do better than everyone else. Right. And they're things that they don't do as good as other brands. So next up, we're going to have the Barkin Jack seatbelt.
Unknown Adrian, Adrian, my man, Adrian.
Andrew The Barkin Jack is 20 pounds. So you're going to pay a shitload for shipping because that's a lot of weight to ship. Um, see what I did there. As of last night, the exchange rate for 20 pounds was a $25 and 97 cents. These are both, these are all going to be 22 millimeter straps because you're going on a 22 millimeter lug width for the NATO or for the Mako. So for another 25 or 26 bucks, you're going to get that gray NATO, which is another really classic look that I love the Mako on.
Everett You know what? That would be a good, that would be a good podcast name. The gray NATO? The gray NATO. Ooh, we should trademark that. We should work, you know, 40 and 20. I thought 40 and 20 was great, but the gray NATO, I'm thinking, Okay, we'll talk. We'll talk offline.
Andrew We'll talk offline. We can just have a bunch of, a bunch more podcasts. You guys can just listen to us and all different brand names.
Everett Yeah. Yeah. So the great, the gray nato, I think we're, we're gonna, we're, we're, we're going to talk about that. That's a really good podcast name.
Andrew Should we spell it with an E or an A?
Everett Ooh, interesting.
Andrew I, I prefer A. I prefer A. I like the way E looks. All right.
Everett All right. Well, we'll, well, we'll have to, we'll have to whiteboard this.
Andrew Okay, we've got some, we've got some time.
Everett So tell me about a some tell me about a Bark and Jack Grenado.
Andrew Bark and Jack Grenado is it's also perfectly soft. What I like more about it than on the Toxic Shiznit is the hardware. The Bark and Jack hardware is off the freaking charts. It's a little bit more comfortable than the Toxic, I think. Both do really similar things. But I think it's all going to come down to the way that your wrist likes that material. Whether more Or less. I think they look equally appealing. They both have the shine that you want on that seatbelt nylon.
Unknown Yeah.
Andrew But they're going to provide you two really good options on that Mako.
Everett Yeah. Between those two. I mean, those are my, those would be my go-tos. If someone said, what NATO should I buy? I say, check out Terriotoxic, check out Adriana Barkachek. Those two things are fantastic.
Andrew And what with that is I wanted to start with some pretty, pretty basic colors. Some of your really foundational colored NATO straps. Cause you're going to get more watches. Eventually they're going to have those 22 millimeter lug width. And then you've got these as options for that. Also last up for the Mako, we've got a Barton elite silicone black on black on black for 20 bucks.
Everett Yeah, that's a good, that's a good choice, dude.
Andrew It's money. I, I don't know the last time I wore my Mako not on
Everett You know those guys at Barton don't pay us. Those guys at Barton don't pay us. They pay some people. They don't pay us.
Andrew Nobody pays us anything. We just love their shit.
Everett Their shit's so good.
Andrew Yeah, it's so comfortable. The only issue I've ever heard of with this is the one that you had, and you had some soap scum stuck under yours, and it gave you an allergic reaction.
Unknown Yeah.
Andrew Other than that, I do wash my straps for the record, just so everyone knows those do get clean.
Everett There's been a lot of comments about how you don't watch, how you don't wash your, uh, how you don't wash your watches.
Andrew Do you just put them in the dishwasher or something?
Unknown That fucker's dirty.
Andrew I mean, how dirty? We're not going to get into this. My, my, my resin case straps that I wear to do yucky things in those get washed regularly. Yeah. Like scrubbed. Sure. But all the rest of them, they just, it's whatever.
Everett No, you know, there's been an entire Instagram page with a select few people, uh, that's been dedicated. People were really upset, really upset that I use baking soda to wash my watches. Uh, I won't call anybody out. I won't call anybody out because is it a call out? I don't know. Uh, but I will say for my part, when I wash my watches with baking soda, what I do is I take a very small amount of baking soda, so less than a teaspoon, and I mix it with a quarter to a half a cup of hot water, and I swirl it up. It's not a slurry, perhaps, but it's just a little bit of baking soda. The reason I do that is because baking soda is a basic solution and it neutralizes the acids that come out of your body. And so to the extent that you're giving off any sort of high acidity sweat, which I know I do, which I know I do.
Andrew All your clothes have holes in the armpits. That's right. Yeah.
Everett It's acid, right? The baking soda will neutralize that. Now, If you're using a baking soda slurry, like toothpaste consistency, there is some risk that that's going to be abrasive and it's going to fog your, your polished surfaces. Um, so something to note, I think it's pretty minimal on stainless steel. I think that the effect baking soda is going to have is pretty minimal. So I say roll with it. However, just note there is, there is a possibility that's a bad thing. So moving on.
Andrew And bigger note, there are some people who are really upset with our watch hygiene practice.
Everett Fuck them.
Andrew Fuck them. Oh, I just dropped my phone.
Everett You're going to be fine. You're going to be fine. What are you wearing? Blackjack? What are you wearing?
Andrew Oh, I'm wearing one of my old army shirts.
Unknown Army.
Andrew Yeah. A is for army. R is also for army.
Everett I like my shorts because they say army.
Andrew Yeah. So now we've got, we're going to get back on topic. We've got an Orient Mako. Fuck that. We've got two seatbelt straps.
Everett The best two seatbelt straps you can buy.
Andrew Yeah, and extremely reasonably priced.
Everett And certainly the best silicone strap you can buy.
Andrew So we are at $196.96 for those four items for that watch and three straps. Plus the bracelet that already comes on. sex This is another watch that we have talked about, sort of, we talked about the dive, but the sector field, the sector dive or are, I'm gonna call them siblings rather than cousins.
Everett Yeah, no direct. I mean, same case, same mid case. Yeah.
Andrew Super identical. Yeah. So they're siblings rather than than than cousins. Notice is doing absolutely killer stuff. The size on this thing is absolutely freaking perfect. The color is terrific. The finishing is terrific. Everything's So good about this watch coming in at 400 bucks. So this is going to be your anchor for your collection. This is going to be the one that you take better care of. This isn't your daily banger though. It could be, this is a true to farm dress sport, and I've got a couple options for you in the way of straps. First, first up, we've got the moose Strapco slim black 20 millimeter. I love the moose Strapco slim herbs, a slim NATO. It feels almost, almost flannel-y.
Everett Yeah. Yeah. I've got a, I've got one of the gray and blue moose straps limbs. So good.
Andrew It's almost flannel-y. So it feels a little bit flimsy, but I feel like the weight of this sector field isn't going to be problematic with it. And would you agree with my assessment of the texture of that material?
Everett Yeah. Flannel. I mean, it doesn't look like flannel, but it feels similar. Yeah. No, I agree with you. So, Next up. Shinier than flannel.
Andrew Yeah. Yeah. Shinier than flannel, but, but has that really soft, supple feel on your wrist. More so than any of the two we've previously talked about. Next up for this watch, because I almost touched my screen. I use a touch screen computer at work and I almost touched my screen as it darkened. Next up, because this is going to be your anchor piece watch, you're going to go to Eric at EAA and you're going to beg and plead with him to make you a custom leather strap for this watch.
Unknown Yeah.
Andrew Yeah. Yes. Yes.
Everett Give me, give me more. Give me more.
Andrew That that's what you're going to do because that is going to be such a perfect, I'm going to say probably a chocolatey Brown, but you do whatever your heart desires because that combo, that combo, you might never take it off of that strap. And that would this sector field on Brown leather, or really any color leather but on leather would be so dope. Last up. This is the one I went kind of big with straps on you went big. We're going we're going for an Erica's original mountain ops, the white so we're gonna get the black with that white accent running down the center of the strap. All ringing in for this notice and her shoes. $566.11.
Everett So, so here we're getting, we're getting a watch. Yep. And we're getting a notice. We're getting a fucking notice. We're not just getting a watch. We're getting a fucking notice. Yep. We're getting an EA8 strap. We're getting a, uh, true to size seatbelt NATO from a, from a dope company, moose strap company. And we're getting an Erica's original for how much?
Andrew $566.11. Goddamn.
Everett Even if we just take this chunk and just say, Hey, you've got $566 to spend. Yeah. You're starting at a such a good place.
Andrew A place where you might not want to buy more watches for years. That's it. That's it.
Everett I've got everything I need. I've got a notice sector field, which I can make be, which can be dressy, which can be, which can be casual, which can get sporty in the shit.
Andrew You can fish in it. You can swim in it. It's the whole package.
Everett You know, when you sent me your notes, you kind of sent them segmented into like, this is how much I spent on this thing. This is how much I spent on this thing. And I looked at this and I thought, fuck, man. That's all you need.
Unknown Yeah, it could be.
Andrew All you need. That's everything. So through that, we've used $798.53. Next pick. is the Casio GWM 5610.
Unknown Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, why do I need that?
Andrew Why would you need that? Atomic solar? Come on. A banger. Just that is your mow the lawn, go fight people, do whatever you feel like doing and in a watch that you can throw at people, you can throw across You can use it as a weight to run line over the tree branch.
Everett Uh, I don't fight people. I don't fight people.
Andrew You don't, you don't ever know. Maybe you're going to go to a college bar and somebody's like, Hey, your beard's better than mine. He'd be like, it is. We're going to fight in words. And then you rumble.
Unknown We're going to fight. You fight people though.
Everett Occasionally. Yeah. Would you, would you fight someone in a 56 10? So, so if I said, Andrew, you're gonna, you're gonna go on shifts and you're going to fight someone. You've got a 5610 on your wrist. Do you take it off?
Andrew Yes or no? No. I wear a 5600 at work.
Everett Fucking A. You fight someone in this watch. A meth head. I'm going to fight a meth head and I'm going to wear this watch.
Andrew Yeah. And I'm going to use a purple wipe afterward and wipe it down. Real good. It's such a killer watch. It's such a classic G Shock look. I love this watch. I went 5600 because I went cheap because I found it for 40 bucks on the Amazon. If I had not found it for 40 bucks on the Amazon, I would have gone 5610. Yeah. Next last, definitely not least. So we're at 890 now. We have, was it $110 a space? Yeah, we have $110 a space. And here, here's what I felt like kind of was the crowning jewel of this accomplishment in the way of choosing a thousand, something to do with $1,000. We're going to go the SNK 809. At $78.98. $78.98 on Amazon as of yesterday. And here's something special. The Haviston M1936 BA2 for $28.55. Kapow! Another canvas single pass that we absolutely love. The colors on it are phenomenal. It's so perfectly compliments that really classic pilot field feel that you get out of the SNK. And it is money. My total price for this collection is $991.68.
Everett Okay, so so to recap, so to recap, we've got tools, we've got a watch repair kit, a full watch repair kit for $16.99. The whole shebang. We've got a storage toolbox, For 19 bucks.
Andrew By the way, that watch repair kit also comes with extra spring bars because I know that one of us here in the 40 and 20 team fucks up spring bars.
Everett We've got an Ori and Mako, so we've got a dive watch. With that Ori and Mako, we've got a shiznit, a black shiznit. We've got a gray bargain jack nato. We've got a Barton silicone. We've got a notice sector field with a moose strap, with a moose strap slim and a custom, a custom handmade E-A-8, E-A-8 leather strap.
Andrew Guys, most importantly, that's not the most expensive strap on this list.
Unknown Right, right.
Andrew Go buy Eric's watch straps. Go buy. And other leather things from him.
Everett Go buy Eric's watch straps. Go buy.
Andrew And other leather things from him. Buy portfolios, buy holsters. We could do a whole segment with him on just leather holsters, I'm sure. Buy shit from Eric. I need to get with him and get him to make me one.
Everett We've got an Erica's Original, uh, their, their Mountain Ops white, uh, white strap. We've got a a Casio G-Shock, a go anywhere, a true, a true go anywhere, do anything watch. And we've got a Seiko SNK 809. So for a thousand bucks, we've got four watches. And, and I think it's fair to say I didn't do, I didn't do as good a job as you did in terms of hitting all the marks. You hit the fucking marks. You hit the marks. And in fact, I wish I, I'm having some, I'm having some reluctance in terms of our, in terms of our, uh, recording procedure. I think I should have gone first and you should have gone second because you, you nailed it. Is it fair to say, Andrew, that in terms of the straps between you and I, you hit every single manufacturer that we'd recommend?
Andrew I mean, no one's coming to mind that I didn't. Yeah. Right. And that's what I wanted. That was my goal was if you're going to, if you're going to drop a bunch of money all at once, Try a little bit of everything, because almost certainly you're going to get one of these straps and it's not going to be your favorite. But one of these on this list, I'm pointing at the list like you guys can see it, one of the straps on this list, one of these companies is going to be your absolute favorite. You know, we didn't talk about Gakota, but I think they're also, they do kind of a little bit more unique straps. And we didn't talk anything about any of the really higher end stuff, but in the way of straps, you're going to find a go-to favorite in this lineup and you're going to own 10 of them. Yeah, yeah, that's right.
Everett That's right. So, you know, it my sort of my sort of running list. If someone asks me, hey, Everett, I need a NATO strap. I need a I need a NATO, a simple double pass NATO strap. I'd say. Toxic, isn't it? Barking Jack? Yep. If someone says I want a paratrooper strap, I say Erica's original. If someone says, I want a leather strap, there is one answer and one answer only. There's literally one answer to that question. Yeah. Yeah. If someone says, I want a rubber strap, I want a rubber strap. There's more than one answer, but in terms of comfort, silicone, Barton Silicone Elite, get it, get it, get it, get it.
Andrew And if you love it, then start start trying the more expensive varieties, start start going up in price, try the watch Gecko try, you know, even even try Terry's his magnum strap, try it, try any of them. But in the way of just get just feeling what silicone is like on your wrist, carrying a watch, the Barton silicone elite is money. It's also a quick release strap, which I absolutely love.
Unknown Yep.
Andrew Yeah, I wish I wish more companies would go towards quick release.
Everett Yeah. Barton silicone weed. And then finally the Haviston, the Haviston straps. Haviston does a thing. Haviston does a thing that's different than anybody else. Right? So they do a, it looks like a NATO. It feels like a NATO, but it winds up being a single pass. And, and there's something about the Haviston straps. If you have struggled to find a, a, um, uh, a NATO strap that you like because of thickness or whatever, there, there might. So toxic NATOs. Barkinjack, Haviston. That's it. You've nailed it. You've picked every single, you've run the gamut. Well done, dude. America. America. Okay. So, you know, it's interesting. So I'm going to, I'm just going to say for the purposes of our, uh, our little conversation here, I went a different direction with my selections, but not in a way. I mean, it almost feels like in some ways we're going to rehash here. Right. A little bit. Yeah. We're going to rehash some stuff. And that's not problematic. It's just based on our experience. We've got a shared experience here. And so I'm going to provide you a little different information, but at the end of the day, you can't go wrong in either of these approaches. So I've got a beginner list. It's a little bit more chunky. How about that? Okay.
Andrew So I'm going to start... Yeah, no, I agree. Looking at your list, yeah.
Everett The way... I didn't do this in quite a segmented way. And what I did do, what I did do is I decided I wanted to have versatility of straps and I wanted to have versatility of wear. So when I made my decisions, I really focused on Am I gonna be able to use this strap for other things? Because that's a problem for me, right? That's a problem. Yeah. I've got this strap I love, but it only works on one of my watches. How can I flex that out?
Andrew And you love the watch less than you love the strap.
Everett Yeah, that's right. That's right. So my plan was to be a little bit more comprehensive in my approach, which means I have fewer choices in terms of watches, but I have a little bit more versatility, I think. I think. So I started, and this is funny, We didn't plan, right? We didn't coordinate. I mean, we literally didn't look at each other's lists until today before we started recording. But I found a GWM 5610, a G-Shock GWM 5610 for sale on Amazon for $91.62.
Andrew It seems like your Amazon prices are always lower than mine, but today they were the same.
Everett Look guys, look guys, if you want a G-Shock, this is the one. And people often ask me, what's your one watch, apocalypse watch, or whatever, right? This is it, right?
Unknown Yeah.
Everett It's solar. Solar.
Andrew It's solar. It'll survive anything.
Everett It's waterproof. It's got a bulletproof movement that can do anything you need to do. Realistically, anything you need to do, you can do that with the G-Shock 5610. Uh, so you've already talked about it. I'm just going to say I picked the same fucking watch without us coordinating that. So $91 shocking. I'm going to so good. I'm going to start there. I'm going to start there. That's my go anywhere, do anything. Uh, you know, there's a global pandemic and I don't know if there's going to be power tomorrow. I'm going to, I'm going to wear this watch. I'm going to wear this watch now. I want something that's gonna be a little dressy, a little sexy. Because you're nasty. Because I'm nasty like that, girl. Yeah. I went with a Hamilton khaki mechanical. Hamilton khaki mechanical. You guys who listen will know that this is one of my favorites. I love a Hamilton khaki mechanical. You can find these used. I put in $300 for this. You don't need to spend that much on this watch.
Andrew It's surprisingly affordable coming out of the Hamilton lineup. It's shocking how affordable it is.
Everett You can find these between $250 and $300. I think $275 if you go with one of the older models with the older fonts, which people are not into right now. Today, the older, the Hamilton sort of proprietary font is out of favor. Everybody wants that big, chunky, triangular, dirty dozen font. But if you, if you go with a, uh, older font, you can pick these up for 250, closer to 300 with the newer font. Um, uh, Kaki Mechanical, it's a brushed finished case, so it's not polished, no polish on this thing. So it's not going to be dressy. However, because of the size and the form factor, it dresses. That's, that's your term, right? You use that. This thing dresses well. It dresses well. You can put it, I've got mine on this shell cordovan strap that I made this last weekend. It's really good by the way. Thank you. Thank you. And it's a fun strap. It was such a fun process. It was like, I didn't plan on doing that and it just sort of popped out and I'm like, Oh, I'm going to do this.
Andrew I thought you were rebuilding your shoes. And then the next picture was a watch strap. And I was like, you did not rebuild your shoes.
Everett That was a, you know, that was a really fun project. I've done a lot of straps in the past, and some of you guys who have been here from the beginning know that I'm sort of a hobbyist strap maker. I'm not good at it, but I'm good enough to make a strap that I want to wear. Right? But yeah, that was a fun process. Taking an old pair of shoes, I took the shell cordovan and I flattened it out and I made it sexy. Shell cordovan in particular is just a really versatile material. But I made the strap and now all of a sudden that watch wears like a dress watch. Mm-hmm. Not a dress watch, but a certainly pretty dressy watch. A dressy watch, yeah. I can put that thing on with a suit and it's great. I can wear it with a t-shirt, great. So 28-800 movement, ETA movement, high quality Swiss manufacturing, a brand with a bunch of American bona fides, love it. Love it. Love it. Love it. You can get into them for under 300 bucks used. Uh, that's the one used piece I picked for my, so 300 bucks. I picked that watch for my collection as sort of an anchor. It's not the most expensive watch in my collection, but I'm going to call it the anchor of my collection because of the versatility. Okay. So I'm, I'm now at 9162 for my GWM 5610. And $300 for my Hamilton. So I'm at $391.62. I've got two watches. I've got two watches. Now the next watch, and this is interesting, again, we didn't coordinate. We didn't coordinate. The next watch, this is going to be my sort of most expensive watch, but also maybe a little bit less versatile than the Hamilton Khaki. I'm going to go with a Notice Sector dive watch. You went with the Notice Sector Field. I went with the Noda Sector Dive. No coordination on that. I like the idea because I've already got a field watch. Yep. I'm going to go with the Noda Sector Dive. And the reason for that is I want a dive watch. You went with the Mako. I'm going to go with the Sector Dive. Yep. I'm going to go with the Sector Dive. So $425, a little bit more expensive than yours. A little bit more expensive than yours. Now, all of a sudden, I'm at 725, what? I'm at 850. So I've used most of my budget here. Yeah. And when I say I would buy a Nodus Sector Drive, I literally just bought this watch. Yeah, you did. Last week. I don't even have it yet. I bought it so recently that I don't even have it yet. So.
Andrew It's probably going to get stolen off your porch.
Everett Let's hope not. I had it delivered to the office. So. Good to know. So, you know, the quality you get with a company like Nodus You know, I sort of, sometimes I go back and forth, right? Do I want to have a quality brand? What is it I want? I think notice is the one brand I feel so confident in. I'm spending a thousand bucks. I want a sort of, not an anchor piece. Cause again, my Hamilton's my anchor piece, but here, this is sort of a second piece. I feel so confident in notice. So confident in notice that I'd pick this over any Longines, Auris, Seiko, anything on the market. I want a dive watch that's going to anchor my collection. I'm going with the Nodus Sector Dive, so $425.
Andrew Here's a question though. Would you feel as confident with the Sector Dive had we not had our hands on it? No. Because we've had the whole Nodus lineup
Everett No, no, I wouldn't feel confident. I wouldn't feel as confident. No, I would not. But, but the question is, but the, but the, the bottom line is I have had my hands on it. Yeah.
Andrew And that's, that's what sold me. I liked the watch. I love the design. I love the dimensions. Everything about it seemed perfect. The finishing. And then I get in my hands and it's just, it, it lives up to every single picture you've seen of it.
Everett You know, you guys who listen, you guys who are regular listeners know the watches we've handled. This is it. I bought one. I spent money on it. I spent my own money on it. This is it. It's dope. It's fucking dope. I spent my own money. How long, I mean, you and I, I think we're in a really interesting position right now. I was talking to Nick from Orion about this the other day, uh, about, you know, we get so many watches and it's so many watches that I'd love to have. And it's really hard to make that decision. Um, you know, what do I spend my money because I'm going to have that watch at some point for a period of time. I'm going to have it. If I want to have it, you know, short of like a high end piece, right? If I want to have it, I'm going to reach out to the owner. I'm going to develop a relationship. We're going to get our hands on it and I'm going to have that watch and I'm going to take Instagram pictures and I'm going to get the satisfaction of enjoying that watch. Which watches do I spend my money on? Well, we haven't bought many of them. Here's the deal. I'm spending money on this watch because it's fucking sick.
Andrew It's good.
Everett It's sick. I've done it. I spent the money. I paid those guys money because their watch is so good, right? So here I am, here I am at what, 800 and change, 900 and change? Yeah. How much am I at? I don't know. Now, the good news about what I've done here, the good news about what I've done here is I've picked two staple watches that both have 20 millimeter lugs. Yep. I don't really have anything dressy. I don't really have anything dressy. That's the downside. That's the downside to what I've done here because I don't have anything that dresses as well as the Mako. The notice is not quite as dressy as the Mako. Um, I don't really have anything, uh, that I'm going to wear with a suit, but I might be able to wear the Hamilton.
Andrew Yeah, I think you can with the hack.
Everett Yeah. Yeah. But what I do have is I have a 20 millimeter platform. that I can just now, I can decide what straps do I want. Blow it up. What straps do I want? So instead of splitting this between Terry and Adrian, I made a decision. Barkinjack. I'm going to get black and gray from Barkinjack. And I like them just a little bit more. I like them just a little bit more. I think Terry from Toxic does fantastic work. His straps are great. They're a little bit different, but for everyday wear Barkin Jack's Nato's are the best on the market at the price. They're the best on the market. I don't think there's anything better. That's where I'm going to direct you Barkin Jack. And so I got both a gray and black in 20. I can now wear these bomb both my Hamilton. I can wear these on my notice. I've got them. I've got them in hand. I'm going to get one. strap from Eric at EAA. Again, we didn't talk about this, but we picked the same shit. Sorry, guys. We picked the same shit because we want the same shit because we've been doing this now for 75 episodes or whatever the fuck this is. This is the shit we want.
Andrew And we've got to handle all of this stuff, whether we paid for it or they've loaned it or sent it. This is all stuff that we've had our hands on for the most part. All these straps are things that we've touched and worn and yuckied up.
Everett So Bark and Jack, Bark and Jack Nato is gray and black. Eric, I want a little bit more specific. I want a burgundy, a reddish brown, full stitch, full stitch, so stitching down both sides, leather strap from Eric. I'm going to put that, and I'm going to put it on everything. I'm going to put, I'm going to wear it with my hack. I'm going to wear it with my notice. That watch is, that strap is going to be super versatile. Yep. Uh, if you can talk Eric into using Chromo XL or some sort of high-end leather, all the better. Uh, maybe you pay a little bit more for that. I don't know, but get it in the best leather you can. Burgundy strap. It'll work with everything. I'm also, I'm also going to get a Zulu Diver Tropic strap. Yep. Zuludiver is a company, Watch Gecko sells them. Zuludiver is a company that has been selling straps for years and years and years. I think it's the same company. It's an Italian company, Bonato Cinturini. I'm making this up at this point.
Andrew It's made up anyway. That's not English.
Everett Yeah. So Zuludiver, the tropic strap that Watch Gecko sells is amazing. It's phenomenal.
Andrew It was a little bit out of my price range, otherwise it was going to be on my list too.
Everett Yeah. You know, it's better. I think it's better than the, um, Uncle Seiko Tropic because it's, it's more comfortable. It's soft, it's pliable. It feels really nice on your wrist. Now I do know Tropic, the company Tropic has been sort of revitalized. I haven't touched one of those. I also know that Baltic sells a 20 millimeter Tropic strap. And I understand that that's really nice. For my money, I'm going with the Zulu Diver from Watch Gecko. And that comes in at about $30. So now I've got all the straps I ever need, right? Yeah. I've got a bracelet.
Andrew You've got the foundation for all the watches you're gonna wanna buy.
Everett That's right. I've got a bracelet on my notice. I've got the canvas strap that comes on the... I've got the canvas strap that comes on the Hamilton. I've got A gray NATO, a black NATO, which between you and me, that's the only color of NATO I ever wear.
Unknown Yeah.
Everett I've got, I've got a rubber strap that's going to fit both of those watches just fine. And I've got a bracelet for the, for the notice. Did I ever say that?
Andrew Yeah. The Tropic is the, the Tropic from Tropic Strapco is coming at 80 bucks.
Everett Not cheap.
Andrew No. And it's only available in 20 right now.
Everett But whatever. I mean, that might be the best one. And if it is the best one, you should get that one. But my experience is with the Tropic from Zuludiver and it's fantastic. It's money. Yeah. It's fantastic. Oh, okay. So I don't know what I'm at, but it's like 900 and change. I'm going to get some stuff. I'm going to get a spring bar tool and I'm going to get a specific spring bar tool. I'm not going to get a kit, a watch repair kit, which You know, you make trade-offs. I'm going to get the Bergeron 6767F tool, which is about $20 on Amazon, $19.63. I'm going to get a watch roll to put all my watches in when I go on vacation.
Andrew My hand's up. I have a question. Please, please. Are you going to resize their notice bracelet?
Everett I've got screwdrivers. Okay. Yeah. Okay. It's a reasonable question. I've got screwdrivers and then notice that notice bracelet has screws.
Andrew Yeah, it does.
Everett Yeah. So continue. Uh, I'm going to get, I'm going to get a, a watch roll. This is a watch roll from a company called hide and drink. I don't have personal, personal experience with them, but it's a wax canvas roll. I like it. It's got four slots. It's fine. 1799. Perfect. And that's it. I'm done. And that's it. I'm done. So, so I have one fewer watch, but I've got a Hamilton. I've got a notice and I've got a GWM 5610, which unless you're in court, that's it. That's all you need. That's all you need. Uh, I've got, I've got straps that will work on both of those watches. Three straps that'll work on both of those watches. I've got a spring bar tool and I've got a watch roll. Bingo, bingo, bongo. That's another good lineup. Okay, so 55 minutes. We're getting deep. We are. Andrew, what do you do if you have got $1,000?
Andrew If I've got $1,000, you know what I'm getting? Tell me. I'm going to do it really, really easy. I'm going to get a Sector Field. I'm going to pick one of those up. We talked about it. We love it. I'm going to pick up three watches for my $1,000. I'm going to pick up a Nighthawk finally. I don't know why we don't either of us have one. Yeah. But I'm fit to sit as a Nighthawk. Yeah. And eventually learn how to use a slide rule. And then I'm going to get the Saab. Yeah. I'm going to pick up an 033. And, you know, just for cuz, I'm also going to get a Haviston. They're all $28.55. I'm not really settled yet on the color that I would get because I don't have $1,000 and my wife has already come into the room during this conversation and said, you're definitely not spending $1,000 on watches. So this is really hypothetical for me.
Everett I love your wife.
Andrew Yeah. I'm going to, I'm going to pick up one of the, um, one of the service series Havistons. I love those single pass. They're super comfortable. The color scheme on them is terrific. They'll go great on the, on, on the SNK or on any other 18 millimeter lineup. I I'm kind of inclined to say maybe I'd want to get it in the 20 millimeter. Um, Because I think it'd look really good on the SSB. I think a lot of these color combos would look good on the SARB. I just, I think there's a lot of options for these, these service straps. But that's my thousand dollars. Pretty, pretty basic. Just three watch pickups that I want to get anyway. And ultimately I will get anyway, but it'd be nice to get them all just in one Amazon order. Because can you imagine opening that Amazon box? Holy shit. I love when a watch shows up in my house. Can you imagine a three? We've had watches delivered. But can you imagine three watches for you forever delivered to your front door?
Everett Sectorfield, Citizen Nighthawk, Seiko Sarb. Yeah. That's fucking awesome.
Andrew That's the lineup. Yeah. Yeah. And so it got me a little bit of heartburn for the amount of money that I'll probably spend this year on watches, but you know, whatever.
Everett You know, that's such a great, that's such a great lineup. You'd get that and it'd be like, I mean, essentially that is a thousand bucks that could be spent for anybody, right? I mean, you could start here and be fine.
Andrew Yeah. Yeah. These are all going to be comfortable and whatever. I mean, we know the Star bracelet's good. We know the Nighthawk bracelet's good. We know the Sector Field bracelet's good.
Unknown Yeah.
Andrew I've got a good strap lineup.
Everett Yeah. You know, I wonder, I mean, I wonder how easy it would be to substitute this for your beginner's list too, right? I think that if you're a beginner and you've got a thousand bucks, I might just fucking start here. You know, you don't really get a diver, but you get the Nighthawk.
Andrew But I'm not inclined to combine the two. In terms of what I would do, I went a little different direction because I think this is just where I'm at in terms of what I would buy.
Everett Um, but I went with, I went with three separate options, right? Because I, I think my next watch is going to be much closer. My, my watch purchases are going to be much closer to a thousand. Um, but my option one, a Monte triumph used a used Monte triumph. You can find these anywhere from a thousand to 1250. So I'm going to have to use some other funds. uh to get a montatrona probably probably i'm probably at 1200 bucks for what i what i spent on that um but i think in terms of if i have a thousand bucks and i'm going to make one purchase that's it right that's the best possible purchase you can make that's the best possible purchase you can make um alternatively alternatively i can get a brand new christopher ward trident c65 Vintage Mark II on a bracelet for $910. I was on their website today, and they didn't have exactly what I would buy available, but Christopher Ward, you know, is always replenishing stock. They've got that Lightbringer case and Bangarang Peter. That's fucking dope. So between the Manta Triumph and the C65 Vintage Mark II, one of those two, is going to bring me the most value possible for $1,000. And you know what? That's going to give me more value than anything I can get from Longines, anything I can get from Tissot. At $1,000, one of those two watches is the best, best use of my money. This is a little bit more personal, but option three, option three, a used Heuer 1000. Yep. Best I can find on a Jubilee bracelet.
Andrew Eventually. Sorry. I am eventually going to work.
Everett Is that Mark? It is Mark. Hi Mark.
Andrew Come here dude. Come here. Do you want to say hi to Everett?
Everett Hi Mark. Hi, I miss you.
Andrew Me too. We should hang out sometime. And I want to show you something. Oh no, buddy. I am still, I'm still, still doing this. So you go out and you can show him another time. Okay. I love you, Mark. Bye. No, you can show him another time. Love you, buddy. He was just really creepily knocking on the door to the family room and like peeking in. Go. Scram.
Unknown I love that guy.
Andrew Yeah, he's pretty cool. No, you can't play in here right now, bud.
Everett So a thousand, a thousand dollars. I can find a whole year. One thousand.
Andrew Mark. Scram.
Everett All right. So for a thousand bucks, I can get a Hoyer 1000. The best, the best I can find for a thousand bucks for sure. That's, that's my, that's my alternative.
Andrew That's a money alternative. I mean, come on.
Everett Dive watch sort of vintage sub style, but also with its own sort of bona fides. Yeah. So one of those three, I'm either going to get a Manta, I'm going to get a Christopher Ward, or I'm going to get that vintage Heuer 1000.
Andrew And you've got the thousand bucks. I mean, you might as well go all the way with it. Yeah, that's right.
Everett That's right. So no bracelets, no nothing. I've got a thousand bucks. This is the watch I'm going to buy. It's one of those three. I like it. Andrew, other stuff.
Andrew My man, go. You know, I've got another thing this week and big shock because we've been living in a shelter in place sort of times. What? It's a Netflix show. What? And that's the only reason it's a Netflix show is because we're living in shelter in place times. What? I watched a show this week on Netflix, a limited series called The Tiger King.
Everett I don't know what this is.
Andrew Dude, you have to watch it. The Tiger King? The Tiger King. It is a Netflix documentary about this dude. And there's a there's a mess of characters. It's it's a good old fashioned like redneck white trash menagerie of people and animals.
Everett Stories of my life. Stories of my life.
Andrew The whole premise is it begins with this dude. who goes by the name Joe Exotic. And he is bizarro. He's this dude in his 50s with a whole bunch of ear piercings, an eyebrow piercing, a mullet with a bleached top. He's always wearing full cowboy garb, a drop leg holster with a 44 mag on his hip. I'm getting hot. I'm getting hot. He's just bizarro. But he owns this sort of legal, sort of not, Tiger Zoo in Oklahoma. And at the peak, he has like 270 some tigers. He's got ligers and lions and tigers and bears. And it's this sort of sanctioned, sort of not sanctioned zoo. And he gets into this beef with a lady who runs a credited big cat rescue.
Everett I'm already mad at this bitch. I'm already mad.
Andrew It is the strangest look behind big cat and exotic animal people, because all the characters in this show are real people, because it's a documentary. Some of them, they even talk about how they kind of play up their behavior for the camera. But seeing these folks who are involved in exotic animals at zoo capacities of animals was Insane and if you do a quick look up on these guys this dude Joe exotic is doing 22 years of time for a murder-for-hire plot against this Rescue lady, but you guys just have to dedicate some time over the next couple weeks to getting into the Tiger King Just for the circus of it. It's them. It was the strangest collection of people I've ever seen on any television series ever And it was highly entertaining. You're just watching it. It awestruck, totally awestruck in what is going on around you. You can't it's it's unbelievable. If it wasn't a documentary, I would think it was like the treasures from the great whatever that was this mockumentary that was just meant as a modern art piece.
Everett I look forward to it. Dude, get it. I look forward to it. I've got three other things. Is that OK? Do do it. Let's light it up. Three other things. So, so I'll be quick. One of my other things is The Elder Law TIFF. Okay. Which is a Radiolab series that I've already talked.
Unknown Yeah.
Everett We've already talked about The Elder Law TIFF. But you're gonna do it again. Six parts. They're all done. And I'm telling you people. Right now, I'm telling you people, listen to The Elder Law TIFF. Really, really, really, really think about it, okay? That's it. Do it. Six parts, The Other Latif, radiolab.com, Radiolab, the podcast, it's it. Listen to The Other Latif, all six, and just, that's it. That's it. I'll move on. That's fair. I think I need to move on because it's political and it's nasty and I'll move on, but you got to listen to it. You got to love it. You don't have to love it. You can do whatever you want, but it's incredible. It's so fantastic. And now that it's done, I'm going to, I'm going to call back the other lot. It's so good. Uh, two, David Simon, David Simon, my man, David Simon has another series, has another series, and it's called the plot against America. The plot against America. It's one of it's, it's a Philip Roth book. And it's about a alternate, an alternate history where Charles Lindbergh, Charles Lindbergh wins, wins the presidential election in 1940 against FDR. And it's date, you can just tell it's David Simon. If you, if, if you don't know, now, you know, David Simon is phenomenal and This series is only two episodes in. So what do we know? We don't know anything. It might be terrible. It might be terrible, but I'm going to tell you right now, but it might not be. Yeah. Right. Look, this is it. This is going to be good. If you're not watching it, you should please, please, please, please watch it. It's going to be so good. It's going to be so freaking good. Uh, you, you know, here we are, we're in the Northwest, you and I, Andrew, where, uh, you know, you and I are sort of probably similarly situated. We're army guys. We're, uh, uh, very much about national defense and, and America and we're Patriots and yada, yada, yada. However, however, I think we're both sort of thinkers and, you know, we, we were sort of pseudo intellectuals when it comes to, to political matters, and we're always sort of thinking about what this means and what that means. David Simon does such a good job about saying, here's what's happening. Here's what this might look like. Think about it. Think about it. And so Plot Against America, wonderful, fantastic. Charles Lindbergh beats FDR. Holy shit, the world's a totally different place. It is, yeah. Say what you will. Say what you will, but it's interesting and fascinating and wonderful. In a way that only Dave and Simon can do. Final thing. Final thing. Uh, coronavirus. Ugh.
Andrew All right, you guys. It's affecting us, our lives, man. We can't record together. That was really insensitive, but.
Everett Yeah, no, but, but it's true. I mean, this is going to affect everything we do for the next six months, two years, five years, whatever. There is going to be a very long lasting effect on coronavirus. So what I want to do is I want to bring out, bring up a company that I'm in love with, that I know is going to be affected by coronavirus, is already being affected by coronavirus.
Unknown So you like, you like coffee. Who doesn't? I like coffee.
Everett I like coffee. We're not, we're not being paid. We're not being paid to do this. So just so you know, we don't, we've never had a sponsorship on the podcast. And if we do ever have a sponsorship and fuck, we may gosh, I, I sort of, I hesitate to say, uh, I hope we someday we do, but we don't have a podcast. However, uh, uh, or we don't have a, we don't have a sponsorship for our podcast. However, Uh, there's a company that we've, uh, been close with since the early days. Uh, they're a company that is a local Eugene company and they sell coffee. They're called farmers union coffee. They're a roaster, a local roaster, a local roaster, and their watch people and their watch people. Uh, however they sell coffee and they've had to close down their local stores. So probably the lion's share of their income has been shut down due to coronavirus. What I want you to do is I want you to go to farmersunioncoffee.com, and we'll link this in the show notes, and I want you to buy a pound of coffee. They sell single origin. They sell their own blends. Find a coffee you like, order it, and spend the money. Spend the fucking money and buy a pound of coffee from a local American company. And if it's not Farm and Union, it's somewhere else that's a local manufacturer of products, right? If you're going to buy coffee, buy it from somewhere like these guys. Don't buy it from Folgers. Don't buy it from fucking Starbucks.
Andrew You shouldn't be drinking Folgers anyway, y'all.
Everett Buy coffee from a place that brews coffee in your neighborhood. This is a, this is a person, a human being that owns this business, probably more than one human being who employs another handful of human beings, a roaster, a retailer. We're talking about at least three to seven people in your neighborhood, in your neighborhood who brews coffee. In our neighborhood, it's farmer's union. And I'll tell you, these guys know fucking coffee. They source coffee locally. They source coffee internationally. Farmersunioncoffee.com and go on there and order some coffee. Now, the one I've pulled up is a Ban Mua Vietnam coffee. It's fruity. It's fruity. It's an acidic coffee. They say it tastes like clean earth tones, passion fruit, guava, Vietnam coffee. As with many of the Asian coffees have high acidity, high fruit flavors. I love them. I love them. Give me the acids, give me the fruits.
Andrew Those are, I think, our best with Irish whiskey.
Everett Yeah, that's true. That's true. So I want you to go to FarmersUnion.com, excuse me, FarmersUnionCoffee.com, and I want you to order a pound of coffee, have it sent to you, and brew the fuck out of it. Brew it right now, brew it today, as soon as you get it, put it in your grinder, put it in your coffee pot, make some fucking coffee, but support your local businesses. support companies like FarmersUnionCoffee.com, support whoever it is, whoever the local people that you know, support them, give them money, right? Because Farmers Union had to put all of their employees on layoff and they had to send them all to the Oregon Department of Revenue for unemployment benefits. You've got people in your own neighborhood who are in the same boat. Do it. Do it today. Do it today. Spend some money. Tip the fuck out of them too. If you've got the ability, tip the fuck out of them. If you've got a line that says leave a tip, leave a 50 or a hundred or a 200% tip. Do it today. If you've got the ability to spend money on a Nighthawk or a used Hamilton Kaki mechanical, you have the ability to tip these fuckers. Do it right now. It's important. This is very, very important. I don't even know how important it is, but we need to be doing it. Honestly, I mean, you're laughing at me.
Andrew No, I was laughing because you're like, it's important. I don't know how important.
Everett I don't know how important it is. We could be in a very serious situation. Support your local industry. Support these companies. Give as much money as you have the reasonable ability to do. Now, don't be stupid. Don't go buy an air-cooled Porsche because you need to support your local mechanics. However, if you've got the ability to support a local retailer in a substantial way, I know these guys, Farmer's Union, they've got a separate Patreon set up or a Venmo or something set up that you can tip the baristas, right? Because they're making videos online, how to mix drinks. They're also a bar, right? So they're doing how to mix drinks. Support your local people. Support them, right? I'm an attorney, you're a cop. We're working. Many, many people are not working today. And what do they do? Where does their income come from? Maybe you at home are in the same situation. Where does my income come from? I don't know. But what we're going to do is we're all going to band together and we're all going to fucking figure it out. So farmersunioncoffee.com, go buy some coffee. If it's not there, it's somewhere from where you're at. Some local company. with local people. Do it, do it today. Andrew, that's all I got, man.
Andrew That's all I got. That's all I got, man.
Everett That's all I got. Are you feeling like, uh, you've got more, more to say today?
Andrew No, I'm, I'm it. I'm dried out.
Everett I'm dried out too, man. This is a hard episode. I miss you.
Andrew I miss you. I don't like this. I like sitting next to you in the basement. Maybe I'll just come in on a hazmat suit next week.
