Everett | Hello, fellow watch lovers, nerds, enthusiasts, or however you identify. You're listening to 1420 The Watch Clicker Podcast with your host, Andrew, and my good friend, Everett. Here, we talk about watches, food, drinks, life, and other things we like. Everett, how are you? I'm great, Andrew. I'm great. I like saying your name like Calvin says your name. Everett. Everett. Yeah. It's a good name. It's kind of really good. good consonant breakups. Well, and it's one of those names that you can say with different amounts of consonants. And different emphasis on different syllables. Andrew is just two consonants. You could say like Andrew, but that's like fake. Yeah, that one doesn't. Everett can legitimately be Everett. Everett. Or it could be Everett, and it could be like A woman in Houston who's on one of the rotating poles. That's funny. Or there are some old people that pronounce it with a single syllable. It's typically ert. They're also watching Evret on the rotating pole in Houston. So really one, two, or three syllables. Andrew, I'm fine. I'm fine. I went to a beer festival yesterday. So given that context, I'm actually really proud of you for being fine. I went to a beer festival yesterday and it wasn't super hot, but it was sunny and it was warm and we were drinking. Lots of beer? Outdoor beer festivals tend to have heavier pours than indoor beer festivals. Well, you know, we got 18 tickets. Because, you know, we just don't know. Which should be like, you know, figured like two ounce pours. You're thinking like seven beers, six beers. These were four ounce pours. These were four ounce pours. They got you good. Yeah. And like the second pour of the day, there was this barley wine. And I was like, I kind of want to try it, but I want to try it now. Because I don't want to have it later. A four ounce pour of a barley wine is a full pour. Well, the guy at the barley wine keg, kind of an older guy, and you could just tell he was like, oh, this is really good. He filled the glass almost all the way up. I'm like, bro, I'm 15 minutes into a six hour. That's more than I would pay $9 for. Into a five-hour beer fest, and you just poured me like six ounces of 15% barley wine. Buckle up. It's going to get fun. Indeed. Indeed. Buckle up. No, it was really good. It was a fun day. Weird. Eugene's a weird place, man. It's just a weird place. And Eugene was bananas yesterday. Yeah, well, actually, we commented... Kind of early on that the attendance was a little low. And I think a lot of people were just doing various activities around the state and city. And so it was good. But anyway, I'm tired. I got home last night at like 7. So late. And I was just like 7 p.m. Yeah, right. And I was just like, well, that's all I got. That was it. I'm hot. I'm sweaty. And I'm just a little... drunk i got a little sunburn like in just weird places i'm pretty tan at this point i know i know i saw your fucking weird sunburns i'm i'm pretty tan at this point but i had like just a few like odd exposed areas so those got so it was just like I fucking feel terrible. Eight o'clock. I was like, I'm going to lay down on this couch and see you tomorrow. Sweat and probably make weird noises, unconscious noises. But Andrew, how are you? I'm good. Happy Father's Day, by the way. Happy Father's Day to you too. When you hear this, it won't be Father's Day anymore. But right now, as we sit here today, it is Father's Day. So for all you fathers. Happy Father's Day. And Andrew, happy Father's Day to you. So yeah, so it is Father's Day. We're recording on Sunday morning before I go to bed. Not a dry episode. I mean, you heard the cork pop. I'm also good. I'm tired, man. I've had a fucked up couple of weeks in like the way of transitioning back and forth on sleep schedule and like busyness on weekends. So like I worked all day yesterday. I got a weird sunburn. I blocked up my face and my neck. And I did pretty okay. But I was on a bicycle all day yesterday. Cop bike. Yeah. Paul Blart. Yeah, very much so. And I very intentionally did not sunblock the top of my nugget. Because I was like, no, you're going to be in a helmet. You're going to be moving around. Turns out I was not moving around as much as I anticipated. And I have sunburns in the shape of the vents on the top of my helmet and on my right forearm, above my watch and below my quarter rolled sleeve. That's how that goes. It's just the dumbest. uh, sunburn configuration that has ever been. Um, and I, yeah, so I'm just, I'm, I'm tired. I just sort of want like a regular week and a regular weekend. And, uh, I, I don't have that for the next couple of weeks. Uh, cause it's summertime, right? And Eugene is bonkers right now. We had graduation this last weekend. So the university of Oregon had their graduation. We had the NCAA track and field finals here in town. Uh, Oh, and an enormous No Kings demonstration yesterday. Yeah. That was the single highest concentration of people I've ever seen outside of Autzen Stadium. It was like 20,000 people, right? I don't know if I'd go up as far as 20. I've heard numbers above 10, though. I'm comfortable with 10. There was like a, I mean, the demonstration was curb to curb for, I don't know, 20 blocks. That's crazy. Yeah, it was not insignificant. So I got home, and I rotted into the couch for a little while, and I restarted Breaking Bad because I was like, oh, you know what? This seems like a good show to rewatch. Have you watched Better Call Saul? No. So my plan is to do Breaking Bad, to do a review of Breaking Bad, and then watch Better Call Saul. That's a lot. That's going to take you like a year. Maybe. Yeah, that's a lot of TV. Maybe. I also run the TV in the background on days. I don't think you can do it in those movies. Maybe, maybe. So we are going to do a... So Andrew and I, I typically share new whiskeys with Andrew on an ongoing basis. Andrew's a whiskey enjoyer, such as myself, but maybe not obsessed in the way I am. I don't go hard as fast as you do into things. You find a thing, you go really hard in the paint, and then you dump it like a bad habit after six months or so. I don't always dump it. It's just less hard. So here we are. Andrew and I haven't drank in whiskey in probably three weeks. Yeah, we've had a weird few weeks of recording. And in that time, I've picked up... 15 new bottles of whiskey. So I brought a flight of the most interesting things we've picked up. And you've also brought the 20-year-old model and the 40-year-old model of glasses that we've talked about recently. That's right. I talked last week about the Glencairn and the Bourbon Trail from Libby. And so I have both of those in front of us. So we're starting kind of weird. We're starting with two with two across the pond whiskeys. One of these is a Scottish whiskey made by Johnny Walker. It is interesting because it's a Johnny Walker high rye. So what this is, is a blend of a it's a high rye whiskey blend. That's been blended with scotches. It's a relatively low proof expression. I'm just going to say it's cheap. I did not like how cheap it was. I would have felt more comfortable with this bottle if it came in at $65. But instead it came in at... $25, which made me nervous. And the second I've poured you is a Powers Irish rye. This is 100% rye from Powers. So we're going to talk about watches. I'm going to let you start, but that's the first two in our flight. Oh, I'm going to start. So I'm going to start so that I can let those breathe for a moment and then get into them while you're talking. So I want to start with our least serious watch of the day with the Seiko 50th Anniversary Jaws Edition SRPL80. One, this is a limited edition turtle with a Jaws theme on the front or on the dial. You've got kind of a silver kind of skyline in your northern hemisphere, an ocean skyline in your southern hemisphere, and the Jaws font logo right below your handset. It's just a turtle on a rubber strap. 800 bucks for this, and I think it's fun. They're making 5,000 of them. Honestly, I might get one of these. I love Jaws. I also can't believe that Jaws is 50 years old. I know that Jaws came out before I was born, but Jaws was not that old of a movie when I was a kid. So I'm not super jacked on. Yeah, just a fun release. A fun, like, a novelty release from Seiko that's unlike many of their other novelty releases. I watched Shows with the Kids recently, and they commented that it was an old-timey movie. And I quote, old-timey. But it is 50 years old. Yeah. So, yeah. Is this going to be... I mean, certainly our most Seiko-heavy episode in a minute. I think so. But also maybe just like ever. Well, I mean, we've done entire episodes talking about Seiko. Sure, but like for a general release episode, Seiko kind of came hard. Yeah, I think Seiko came hard in our ballpark because I don't think this is an inconsistent amount of Seiko releases. I think it's an inconsistent amount of Seiko releases that we might care about. Is this a king turtle? Is it the king turtle? Or is it just a turtle? We got Sapphire. Sapphire. 45 millimeter case, 47 lug to lug, 13 tooth thick, 4R movement. Do we have sapphire here? Yeah. Yeah, it's interesting. I'm not sure what, like this turtle, king turtle, and I'm not totally confident that I know all the differences here. Yeah, this is fun. This is fun. I... It feels like it's just a little bit on the nose with the dial. And you know what? I'm totally fine with that because that's what Jaws is. Yeah. It seems like maybe they could have made it like... I think, though, you start to risk getting too novel. Because this is a watch that, like, without... really looking at it. It doesn't really look like a Jaws. Well, what if they had just taken, what if they took the Jaws off and just did this dial? What if they take the Jaws off? I think I like it better. And put just jaws on the back like screen printer red jaws under the wave on the back. No, I think they made the right decision because they could have just as easily have gone with this shark kind of like gently coming out of the water in that. separation between this earth and sky. It's cool. I mean, it's a 50-50, right? They could have gone way too far. I think that little splash of color with the Jaws logo just below the handset is really, really disciplined, especially from some of the novelty watches we've seen from Seiko. It's fun. We're going to need a bigger watch, though. It was good, right? It was good. It was good. Should we just keep it going? Is this the high rye? Okay, yes. So we've got Johnny Walker high rye in the Glencairn Powers 100% Irish rye. So I think with the Johnny Walker high rye, we do have some malted rye. It's some malted, some unmalted rye. I'm going to talk about a watch that I almost kind of skipped over and then had to come back to. So Gene Kranz, famous – Famous NASA personality. Famously played by Ed Harris in Apollo 13. Has been played by other actors. Gene Kranz. So first, I'm going to say. Gene Kranz is someone who's oft photographed. And I think I've seen him photographed in about two dozen different types of watches. So let's just be clear. Gene Kranz is a watch dude. And I'd like to see his collection. I think he's in his 90s now and still kicking it. But with that said, in Apollo 13, the movie, he was wearing a Seiko watch. And in the movie, Apollo 13, he is wearing a Seiko watch. And it's not exactly the right watch. It's not exactly the right watch. I can't remember what they put him in. With that said, Seiko has decided to revive the watch that he was actually... wearing during the Apollo 13, which is the 6198460. And look, this is a Seiko 5. It's just a Seiko 5. Like if you've seen a Seiko 5 and you look at this, you'll be like, yeah, that's a Seiko 5. It's sort of a C-shaped tonneau case. And they made this thing basically perfect. I mean, it's not one-to-one, but aesthetically in every meaningful sense. it is one-to-one the fonts are right the texts are right the colors are are right the size is right size is right bezels right um so what it is it's a 38 millimeter by 44 millimeter like semi tonneau um I think that it's with the crystal 13 millimeters thick or just under 13. So really, really, really good case size on this. It is a Seiko 5. They come in silver and they come in black. Although at some point I heard someone refer to the silver dial as a white dial. It looks pretty silver to me. It's not crispy white. It's foggy white. Yeah, I think it's silver. It's silver. I think it's silver without any argument. It's got a rattly-looking Seiko 5 bracelet, although I will note that it has solid end links, and the end links are attractive on this thing. Solid female end links. gosh i'd fuck with this watch i really think this is really neat 460 euros so we're looking at i mean 460 bucks yeah it's gonna come in at 400 under 400 when you actually buy these things limited to 10 000 pieces which means they made a bucket load of them uh 10 10 bars of water resistance really really attractive day date window with a with not a color match so we've got a white day a black date On the silver and a white date, black date on the black. I'd fuck with the black. So did you try the Johnny? Yeah. It's interesting. You get that rice spice. But also it tastes like Johnny. A little bit of peat. It's not super peaty. Yeah, it is like a... It's like a spicy Johnny Black. Yeah, maybe. Yeah. Maybe. Super quaffable, but like spiced on the front. All the heat is like kind of concentrated into spice on your tongue. Like a big black pepper. It's a really interesting booth. You said it's $25? $25 or $28? I can't remember. It's really interesting though, right? I think it's the favorite. johnny walker i've tasted i'm still a green guy i like green i drank a lot of black i've had blue and wasn't unimpressed it tastes more like black than green yeah it's like a spiced black um yeah blue is really good it's just so expensive that it's it's not it's not 200 good though yeah anyway Yeah, that's good. That's good drinking. Okay. I think this is, okay, so wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. I do tend to do this thing where I'm like, this is special. People are like, it's just a watch. No, I mean, this is a really well executed, not even a reinterpretation, a re-release of a watch that somebody really important wore. And we can confirm that they wore it. And it's Seiko doing a thing that they should have, like, normally, I think Seiko screws this up somehow. I don't know how they screw it up, but they screw it up. And they did not screw this up. Maybe we get a proper Pogue re-release. This thing's so great. It's a Seiko 5 that I'm totally not mad at it. I'm 0% mad at this watch. Yeah, I don't have any. No notes. No notes. That's right. Is this white lightning that you're? I've got a jar of white dog. No, this is water. Oh. We're doing a whiskey fight, so I didn't want to bring 10 glasses, so I just brought a jar of water. I thought he was about to deliver moonshine, which was equally fun because good Georgia moonshine is a winner. Well, since we're in the Seiko vein... I mean, should we just go through the Seikos? We maybe should. So we have two new PADI editions of the SPB501 and SRPL53. And a Blue Dial Samurai into Prospex. And, you know, these are just color iterations. But they're really good. They're really good. There's this... So on the, it's a special edition, green aluminum bezel insert, emerald green dial, and the dial is fantastic. It's kind of a gradient. It's very ocean inspired, right? So southern hemisphere is kind of green, dark, no real texture that fades into sort of like... If you're imagining looking up to the surface of the water from underneath. You see kind of like ripples and waves breaking. And it's a really, really good green. And that's all I have to say about that. They're $1,700. I think I've got more to say about these. So I think. You're really that excited that you have more to say? I do. Yeah. So I think about a year and a half ago. No, it's been more than that now. Maybe two and a half years ago, we recorded an episode with Will where we talked about the state of Seiko. I can't remember what the episode was called. I think it was called. I think it was the state of Seiko. The state of Seiko. Yeah. basically in that episode we concluded that seiko is still functionally very similar to what seiko was that there were some changes right there was the the glut of seiko fives that had existed sort of as asian and european markets had sort of started to come off of the market the um The SKX at that point had been discontinued, and we were sort of seeing that. The Seiko 5 Sports range had come out. So different, but I think along with different, there's this assumption of worse, and I just call bullshit. I just call bullshit. And recently Zach Kazin has written about and Mike Razak has written about. The Wall Street Journal. Separately, but perhaps like communicating with one another in the epistle fashion, have written about like this idea. Well, Seiko's maybe still here, but there's just other options. And I think that's right. But here, I think we've got. As Seiko has matured, so too we have matured. I think we've got evidence of this here. Okay, so first, in case you missed it, last year Seiko released a new Samurai. And it's fucking awesome. It is a $450 ISO certified... Tip to tail, rad Seiko watch. Brand new, awesome in every way. Hardly anybody talking about it. Awesome. 6425 ISO certified dive watch that you can get for under 500 bucks. Okay. They've also got the Turtle that we just talked about. They've also got the SPP-143, which I love, or the SPP-543, which is sort of the new version. I mean, what we've got is between $1,500 and $450, we've got... What, five different current market Seikos that are all really cool in their own right? Yeah. And that provide different levels of finishing. I mean... The Blue Samurai is a hit for me. I think that this is going to fly off the fucking shelves. So A, Patty working with Seiko, not a new thing. But they were like, let's do an expensive one and a cheap one. I think they said $650 here. This thing's going to sell for less than that. A Blue Samurai, I mean... Come on. Can we please stop with this Seiko bullshit? Seiko is never made the best watches. And today, they don't make the best watches. But are you telling me they don't fucking run this space? Because they run this space. They run this space for watch people and non-watch people alike. And if you're telling me different, you've got some explaining to do. I mean, you make an argument, Christopher Ward. You can make an argument for other companies. But at the end of the day, they're just not. I mean, Seiko owns it simply by way of market insertion. Who was the sixth man on Jordan's dream team? Oh, I don't know. Tony Kukoc? I'm not sure. Exactly. That's the argument that you're going to make for Christopher Ward. Oh, on the dream team? Yeah. I think it was Clyde Drexler was sixth man on the dream team. Okay. So as a, as a blazer fan, I'll stop answering because I'm killing your point. But that's, that's my, like your argument for Christopher Ward, perhaps running the space is no, he's the sixth man. Seiko is backed up by citizen is backed up by maybe Timex and then Bolivar. And I don't know who had put as the fifth man on that in the larger watch sphere. This isn't just watch people. We exist in a very small corner of the watch industry. And though our opinions are meaningless, we still... opine poetically. All right, we've got one more Seiko, but we'll come back to it. But Seiko's running, Seiko runs this segment. Yeah. There is no argument if Sans are butts. Is it my watch or is it your watch? You're up. Eska? You know, I don't know a lot about this brand. And there's a reason I don't know a lot about this brand. They just haven't released a lot of watches. That's why I didn't pick this watch. They had a comeback. They're sort of an early 20th century brand. And then they were Quartz Crisis. Quartz Crisis blown up. Casualties of the Quartz Crisis. I think brought back in 2023 or 2024 with their Amphibian 250 dive watch. They had a black dial, a white dial. I didn't like either one of them. I just say, I look at them. I look at them and I think, don't like. However, ESCA has released a bicompax chronograph that they're calling the Heritage Chronograph. And I just want to hate it. It came up and I was like, I want to hate it. And I looked at it again. I was like, maybe I don't hate it. Let's give it a little look-see. And then the more I look at this thing, the more I'm like... It doesn't feel like a cool watch because it looks like 8 billion other watches. And it looks like a watch that could have come out 70 years ago, but also that 20 other companies have released. And then the more you look at it, you're like, nope, nope. Actually, Eska is made a cool watch here. I am totally with you. On first glance, I'm like, this is a 1963 being sold for about $2,000. And I look at some more, I'm like, well, okay, let's pass over that complaint. Because obviously you can make a 1963 better than a $400 watch. You can put a Le Jeu Paré movement in it. You can improve your finishing. Your design can be better. You can add a butterfly clasp. This is a cool watch. I see that. And I am not excited by it. I think the same. Okay, so what we're drinking here. It feels uninspired. 100% rye from Powers. It's delicious. Again, you guys are, all we're doing here is I'm, this is the chance Andrew and I to have to catch up on the new whiskeys that I want him to try from my collection. This isn't really part of the show. And we just have to record while we're doing it because our wives. That is the time our wives give us to drink together. Yeah, that's reasonable, folks. Powers, 100% rye, really good. Super lovely watch. It's a 38 millimeter case. It's 13 nine thick. 47 lug to lug. Showstopper 316L steel. I feel like that should just be the given. That's an industry standard to stop including it. Unless it's something else. AR coated sapphire crystal. Mineral glass case back. Like 50 meters. Like everything about this. Beautiful case. Beautiful crown. It's beautiful. I mean, this case is not like any other case, right? You see it from top down and you're like, I've seen this watch a hundred times. And then you see it from the side and you're like, nope, no, I haven't. Yeah, it's certainly different, right? It a little bit modernizes that typical 1963 bi-compact look because I think that's what this is the most fair comparison to this watch. Given the vintage-inspired dial, that's where my head goes immediately. Are you going somewhere else? Yes. Well, no. I mean, the problem is with this watch is where my head goes immediately is not what this watch actually is. Like I even struggle with it the more that I learn. So we've got a two-layer step dial, two layers of enamel, two stepped layers of enamel dial with white tracks and old radium tracks. I mean, this beautiful, beautiful pad printing. It is. Right? It's all so good. Zoom in on the pad printing. I am. I have. This watch was on my list and then subsequently removed. I just, I want to like it and I don't. Well, I understand why, but I think it's really, really cool. So it does have a Lejeu Paré, a 113. Now, that is a movement that I understand can be fitted with a rotor. They have opted for the non... rotor version the rotorless version of the l113 so it is a hand-wound column wheel 7750 architecture movement from lejeu peray beautiful movement by the way it is it is beautiful movement so andrew here's the thing here's why i think this is better than you think it is so The bracelet looks fantastic. Sure, sure. Like a butterfly class beads of rice. It's just, everything about it says it should be really good. And for some reason, nothing about it excites me. So in this world. You've got Baltic makes their bike compacts. I think you can get Baltics with either the Seagull movement at like $600 or with the Salida 510 for more, $1,700 or so. We've got the Yamaha Rally, which is more of like a racing Seiko column wheel movement at like $2,000. We've got Hamilton Intramatic, which has an H51 7750 movement, a manual 7750 movement for $2,100. Not cool. Not as cool to watch. Nowhere near as fucking cool to watch. You've got the Nevada, the Chronomaster, which I think, again, has Seagull or... Seagull or Solita options, and they're both more expensive. I mean, you've got the Excelsior Park, which is really close, but this is just cooler in every single facet, and it costs less. You got the Laurier Gemini, which is just a Seagull movement, and it's a lot less and probably almost as cool, but it's a Seagull movement. Like, this thing is... I think the 356, Zinn's 356, fits the bill also. Yeah, but how much is the 356? 2,700 euros. Yeah, way more expensive. It's out of the game. But if I'm choosing to spend... These are $1,700? And a Zen 356 is a tri-compact. No, the 356 Pilot is a bi-compact. Okay, well, very, very different watch. But that's the same feel it gives that. Very different watch. It is very different, but it gives the same feel. Anyway, I think my point is this is a really good watch. That's my point. Sorry, I would love to not like it, but I like it. I think I don't disagree. I'm just not... What's next? I don't know. Better pick something. We're running out of time. We're not. We run the show. What do you think of this 100% Rye Powers? I haven't tasted it yet. I've been working through the nose. It smells like a Bordeaux. It has a very wine, like a really fruity, florally wine. Give it a start, dude. This stuff is really cool. Unmalted. So it's 100% unmalted rye. Stored in Irish oak barrels. I think it comes in at like 93. I could drink that every day. All day. It kind of reminds me. The flavor profile is totally different, but it reminds me of drinking a really low ABV like Saison. Kind of like a little bit funky. A little funky for sure. But just like super drinkable and refreshing. There's no bite to it. There's no heat to it. It's a much higher ABV than drinking like a 3% Saison. Oh, sure. I think it's only like 93 proof. That's really good. Really good. And not for lack of proof, it is a bit of a heater, right? It's got warming notes to it, but it's not like you don't get a hug from it. I get a little hug. You want to hug it? I get a little hug. I mean, I think this to me, if you gave this to me and said, where is this from? I would say Indiana or maybe Kentucky. But never in a million years would I say Ireland. Yeah, I'm with you on that. It's very Midwest, corny, sweet. I'm thinking this is MGP all day. You hand this to me, you say, what is this? I say, it's rye. You say, yeah, where's it from? I go... Actually, it's from fucking Ireland. Go ahead. Okay. So we said we're going to talk about Seiko. I'll finish up our Seiko discussion. The Seiko Presage Classic Series Craftsmanship SPB499. Andrew must pronounce his words too when I feed him whiskey. Yeah. With an Arushi dial. And, you know, we've talked about an Arushi dial fairly recently. It's not this dial. This is a... What? Who did an Arushi dial? I was trying to come up with this. I think it was also a Presage. Presage is, like, banging right now. They're just churning them out. We've had five Presage releases this year. Maybe more. Yeah, almost certainly more. Five that we've talked about this year. Which means probably ten, realistically. Yeah. Seiko's putting a lot of ass behind the Presage line right now. So this we have a, it looks like small seconds, but Christ almighty. Do you know what Urushi is, Andrew? Does it sit next to Unagi on the Sushi line? I found unagi sauce in a bottle at the store and I bought it because I make it. It's super easy to make. But I found it in a smaller volume than I prefer to make it. I was so excited because that's like one of my favorite condiments of all time. So Urushi is a natural lacquer found in Japan, China, and Korea. So it's a Southeast Asian naturally occurring lacquer. But you have to like go through the intense nature of lacquering it. So it's actually not lacquer. It's a tree sap. So lacquer is usually animal derived. This is a plant derived lacquer. but very similar to an enamel application. And it is absolutely stunning. Gorgeous. They use it for high-end fountain pens. High-end fountain pens often get Arushi finished. Maybe that's the last time we talked about Arushi was when you were in your fountain pen kick. I'm still in a fountain pen kick. So these are 100 meters of water resistance. Hours, minutes, small seconds. Black Arushi lacquer, gold-painted Roman numerals, minute track, 24-hour indicator on your small seconds. So that's what would be a small seconds dial is actually your 24-hour hand. 6R5H movement. But when you zoom in on these gold hands... They are the star of the show. You think the hands are the star? The hands are the star. So we have this gorgeous lacquer dial that provides this amazing backdrop for this kind of like lightly white and gold speckled handset that is just absolutely stunning. I think it's a gorgeous watch. I don't typically like gold-gilted dials. This one does it for me. We've got a gold rotor on the back, and it's not actual gold, but it's golden rotor. This is a watch I could buy. You know, we see all these Presage iterations coming out. I'm like, oh, I like that one. I like that one. This one is a little problematic for me. What kind of salvages it is it's a 40.2 millimeter case. If this was a 36 or even a 38, fuck, I'm done. I'm buying it today and calling it a Father's Day gift. Yeah, I'm going to talk about another watch that feels like it's too big in just a second here, but I think I may be coming around. I think I'm maybe coming around to oversized. What's in this one? Dress watches. Okay, so next, Andrew, you are going to be drinking a Bardstown distilled by Bardstown. It is a, this is a weeded bourbon out of the Bardstown Origin Series, which I've been trying to pick up for a while. Finally found a bottle, picked it up, and I really, really enjoy it. It's super sweet. It's like syrup. It is super duper sweet. I haven't tasted it yet. It is super duper sweet. Cool it over there, man. Yeah, don't worry about it. It smells like molasses. I don't have, yeah, so 53% corn, 39 wheat, and 8% malted barley. Six-year age statement on this stuff, so between six and eight years probably. I bought this kind of on whim and then I got it home and I tasted it and I was like, oh. I just want to smell it. Andrew needs to have this. Yeah, really, really good stuff. What nobody, including you, knows is how often I go to your house and just pour a pint and just mix them. I am coming around, Andrew. I am coming around to big watches. Big dress watches. And this one made me feel that way. That's where I draw the line because I want a big dog shit trash dive watch. We're talking 45 plus, like 48 maybe. Like my divex. Yeah, like your Dive-X or even like the... Shoot, what's the name of the watch with the depth indicator we talked about last week? Like that Citizen. Yeah, yeah. I'm like, I could do that. And I think I'm really okay with it. I'm not opposed to big watches. Like big watches have their place. But just like a tool, right? You know, everyone has... Everyone who does work with tools in their home has about eight hammers, because every hammer has a really specific application. Sure, sure. And sometimes you need the big-ass framing hammer, and sometimes I want that. Yeah, yeah, I'm with you. I kind of like this big... big dress watch the big presage dress watches i think there's something about them that's starting to appeal to me um and and that that brings up my next watch so brellum brellum is a brand that i don't I don't think we've talked about a lot of this show, and I think we should talk about Brellum more. Probably, yes. Brellum's a weird brand. So I think these guys introduced 2016. A couple things we should note from the beginning. They make about 300 watches a year. So kind of hard to get umbrella watch. They also price them very competitively. Did you just, you just, you just took that to the face. I did. I did. Andrew was just shooting six-year-old foolproof whiskey. I wanted a good taste of it. And these pours have been small. And it just sort of happened, right? I meant to go for a small pour, but because we're drinking, I have to go in Karen. Once you break that plane, it's coming. Yeah. This is the first time we've done a flight while recording the show. We probably won't do it again. It's not working super well. With that said, I'm having fun. Me too. I think the show is suffering for it. It's not. So this is the Bardstown. I'll make sure to link. It's weeded. I think that this is like, I'm going to say Weller 107-ish. Yes. Similar. It's not, of course, Weller 107, but we've got a similar vibe here. Yes. Super bright. Like almost kind of young tasting. It's youthful. It's youthful. No doubt about it. Like super high highs. So is Weller 107, though. Super drinkable, though. Like quaffable. Immediate red fruit that hits the back of my throat, I should say. Sweet. Almost Irish whiskey sweet. Very sweet, but then you get that big sort of tannic, oaky comeback that you don't get from Irish. Yeah, you don't get that. This has got, this is a great whiskey. I don't know. I don't know what, I don't know how else to say it. If you are like chasing bottles of Weller 107 for some reason. Maybe don't. Maybe don't. Go get this. There's a few, there's a few whiskeys that are out right now. I still think the Holiday Rickhouse proof. But this, this as well. I'm like, bruh. Bruh. Yeah. I'll also say now we're drinking out of the Glencairns and the Libby. We're going back and forth. We're going back and forth. I much prefer the drinking experience out of the Libby's. Way more, right? They do similar things. I would have got a sip out of the Libby and I took the entire port of the face out of the Glencairn. You get a much better nose out of the Glencairn. Like no doubt about it. You can't get the same nose out of a Libby that you do from Glencairn. No, because of the concentration, that tulip shape. But the Libby's nicer to drink out, especially if you're drinking with someone, like trying to enjoy someone's company. Yeah. Where are we at in terms of watches? So they're making 23 pieces of each of this watch. One in a grade five titanium and the other in steel. The titanium does come with an all titanium bracelet. Really beautifully decorated bracelet. BR-110 caliber movement, which is a Leslie Perret L-110 base movement. And I can't look at movements back, like, you know, movement top down and see the modifications that are being made besides, like, this really gorgeous decoration. This is a COSC-certified... Watch, and you know, the reason we don't talk about Brelem is because Brelem is virtually an omtanium, right? 300 watches a year is, it's certainly a watch brand, but they don't, they're not, they're just not making enough watches for it to be a viable conversation point for us typically. But this is a $20,000 watch. Realistically, yeah. If any, if, I mean, it, Really, if anyone else is making this watch, it's $20,000. The only difference between this and a $20,000 watch is it's got an LJP movement. Yeah. Tip to tail, this thing is fucking gorgeous. It's gorgeous. As long as it produces this watch, it's... Yeah. It is insane how attractive this watch is, Andrew. Yes, the color use is fantastic. On this blue dial, you've got these kind of like... I'd say like somewhere between Breitling and Tag Heuer use of really drastic color changes around the dial. You've got a timer inset into your markers with the loom plots, with orange plots going from your 12 o'clock to your four o'clock. Do you know how, I have no clue how hard it is to get these. And we've never tried. Why? That's what I'm saying. I don't know. This is... I mean, I know how hard it is to get a Smiths. Insane. And Smiths makes way more watches. Like for three... What is it? Four grand? Yeah, about. These are insane. Yeah. I mean, I can't touch them. And so I can't tell you like, oh, the quality of this is this or that or whatever. But you can just tell. Yeah. The look of the design, everything says this is what dreams are made of. And they're made by hand. And a full titanium case and bracelet combination. Yeah. Oh, no. I don't see a titanium bracelet. The titanium comes with a strap, and the steel comes with a bracelet. Yeah. So I was wrong. Yeah. Really, really cool watches. Brellum made a really cool watch. I don't know if we even said what it is. We just moved, so we were talking about whiskey. We were focused on other things. We were talking about whiskey. It's a Tricompax, the Pandial Marina Tricompax Chronometer. Pandial is an existing line for Brellum, but this is a new, the Marina Tricompax is a new watch for them. And it's an absolutely gorgeous blue with silver rings around the sub dials. I mean, it's just, it's a gorgeous, like I said, it's somewhere between like Breitling and Tag Heuer in the way of its color use. Yeah, maybe color use, but then the rest of this watch is all like. It's all Broem, right? But it has that same, that like tier of design and watchmaking feel. I think you're undershooting by about $30,000 a watch. This looks to me like a Longa or a JL. I mean, I think you're undershooting by an order of magnitude. This thing looks insane to me. I love it. I love it. I don't know how hard it is to get one of these, but I'm interested. Pushers are just stunning. Andrew, what's next? Oh, what's next for me? Uh, we're just, I'm going to go in the order of the links. Uh, fairer has launched a new generation of their Aqua compressors, uh, with a leisure parade movement. I see a lot of brands moving that route as like, it seems like a lot of these, uh, not younger, but kind of burgeoning brands in their growth pattern are moving up market in movements. You mean going towards Le Jupre movements? Yeah. Well, I think when Etta locked things up, I think Le Jupre was like, hey, we're going to be better than Salida. We'll take your movements. We're going to do what Salida does, but better than Salida. Maybe. And I don't think you're wrong. So, okay, so Andrew, what you've got here, what you've got in your hand, quickly, this is a 1792 foolproof. It's made by 1792. And up until about a month ago. I think I had this at your house. It was really hard to get. Okay, maybe. It was hard to get foolproof. Show me the bottle. And now it's not hard to get foolproof, but it's really fucking good. And it only is 52 bucks. I remember this conversation. Yeah, I had this at your house. Oh, wow. Anyway, you're going to have to have some more. We were both a little in the bag, which happens. Okay, so a 41 millimeter case, 12 and a half thick, 45 lug to lug, brushed and polished grade two titanium. There is a blue PVD coated with the white dial, 2.2 millimeter domed sapphire crystal. So we've got three options. We've got green, Hunter Green Ocean Blue. Which is new for the model. The blue PVD is absolutely phenomenal. Though I'll say it does kind of fail to deliver on the typical color contrasts that I know and love of Ferrer. We only have two colors on the blue. This icy, icy white and this really great, deep, tending towards like... black, blue. Um, but they show up in the dark because it's a full loom dial and it's baller. Uh, the black dial has, again, kind of a lack color for a lack of color for fairer with a little loom plot on your seconds hand and the green, uh, It's almost the color of the lume. So these watches, I think your point that they're lacking color, I think, is a good one. So these watches, released by Ferrer in 2017, when they first came out, they were steel. We had ETA movements, steel. I think the second version of these had Salida movements, but were titanium. Okay. I think the notable thing of the Aqua compressor is that it is an actual compressor case. So we've talked... Yes, we talked recently that there's no compressor cases and we couldn't think of this. Yeah, well, so it is true that they do a compressor case. And there's another company too that does a compressor case and they are called Sherpa. But... The difference between, so Ferrer and Sherpa are both doing a quote-unquote compressor case, which is to say that as tension increases... there is a gasket in the back of the case that allows for additional pressure to be applied. Yeah, the pressure actually seals the watch. It is a compressor case. The difference between this and what Christopher Ward is doing is Christopher Ward has reverse engineered the EPSA style spring. So there is a difference. With that said, you're right. We did say nobody else is doing this. Sherpa and Ferrer are both doing compressor cases. They're not doing it the way Christopher Ward is doing it, though. It's super different. It's different. It is different. Yes, that's right. That's right. These are cool. Yeah. They're cool watches. They're affordable. I think Ferrer made a great decision to go away from the Salida. Yeah, they're $1,300, and these are great. Everything about this design is great. They're twin stick with an internal rotating bezel. And the green dial is dope. It is. So is the full lume. But, you know, it doesn't feel like fairer to me. The fonts are fairer. The case is fairer. I'm okay with it. I want more fairer color. I mean, there's a platform there, but I'm really okay, especially with this green waffle dial. Yeah, the green waffles. Full titanium. I'm really, really into this. It's pretty baller. Yep. And $1,200. $1,300, sorry. Whatever. And then the Endeavor Ocean Blue is $1,350. Also, the profits of this watch are going to a good cause. This is not a word that I'm comfortable... Attempting. Well, don't attempt it. It's spelled H-E-B-R-I-D-E-A-N. Hebridean, maybe? Good causes. Good causes. Whale and Dolphin Trust, and it's a marine conservation charity, which is... Important and valuable. And I appreciate when companies are willing to put their money where their mouth is. Andrew, 1792 foolproof, that? It's super good. God, it's so good, right? It's as good as I remember it being. And it doesn't make sense why it's so good. I get butterscotch candy very much. Just butterscotch candy, right? About a week ago, my recruit took a pretty old man into custody. Like, really old man. We had to pull the car up to him because he couldn't cover the distance between his residence and the car. And during the inventory of his property... We sure as shit pulled out peppermints and butterscotch candies out of his pocket. It's the funniest shit. I took that picture. I sent it to a bunch of people. I was like, you gotta be fucking kidding me. This guy sure does have hard candy in his pocket. I bet he likes 1792. I know he likes it. This is like the most bourbon-y bourbon I've ever had. I just got like a really interesting like dark tobacco note on the nose. Have you ever had a $52 bourbon and you liked as much as this? I know the answer for me is no. This isn't even my other thing. This is just our flight. I think it's the best $50 bourbon that you can buy. That's all I can get. I'm just getting cigar wrapper. Cigar wrapper and butterscotch. Yeah. You have to send me a list of the bottles that you brought over. I'll send you a list of them. We'll link them. Or not. I've got one that's my other thing. I'm not going to tell you what it is. It's sitting there. It's breathing. It's ready for you. Oh, wow. Oh, that's it, huh? That's the other thing. Okay. Slightly bigger pour. It is. Because you're going to want more. You can't have more. That's what you get. I have a key to your house. Also true. Okay. We can talk about more watches or we can just move it along. You know, let's move it along. Andrew, other things. What do you got? Well, I'm going to flash traffic these. Nevada Gretchen with a new Antarctic Diver Aquamar. It's fantastic. Nevada Gretchen is throwing out bangers right now. Breitling with some new Super Ocean. Heritage Collection releases. Some of them are okay and some of them are terrible because it's Breitling and sketchy dudes wear Breitling and Breitling is also dope. And then I'm not going to talk about this one. Wait, what is it? Just say what it is. I don't want to say that or even attempt that word. Venezianico. Oh, yeah. You have to practice this one. It is one you have to practice. Venezianico, I think, is maybe what we're going to go with. With a Redentore Utopia, with a new Italian-made V5000 caliber. And I think that is exciting, seeing Italian-made calibers. Italian watchmaking is not something that we talk about ever because it's just not... It is a thing, but it's not a thing. Venezia Nico is a brand that makes sort of interesting, but like for me, potentially sus watches. And they've just released their V5000 caliber in-house, which is a... Maybe a banger. Which is a position agnostic regulated movement. And it looks really cool. And it's in the world of affordable. Totally, yeah. It's $4,500. The watch that they released it in sucks. I hate it. I don't hate it. It's Italian. But it sucks. It's super Italian. It's like very, I think I've said enough. It's very Italian. And there's nothing wrong with the Italians, but it's a very Italian watch. Also, Tudor released a Blue Lagoon Black Bay with a polished bezel, and it's fucking weird. Andrew, other things. What do you got? So this morning, it's Father's Day. Whether or not y'all know this, I'm a critter person. There's hundreds of hours of me on body camera going, ooh! When he's doing the gerbil. It's mostly on OnlyFans, by the way. When I see dogs or cats or I... He's just going to move on. He's not going to acknowledge it. He's like, you know what, Everett? I'm done with you. I believe that no day is complete unless you have touched somebody else's dog. Jesus. So my wife and kids for Father's Day got me a bird buddy bird feeder, which is a smart bird feeder. And I see these at Costco. They are right there at the entrance. And then there's always a horde of old ladies standing around it. And we've got good old ladies in Eugene. by the way we do and our our assisted living and independent living facilities take field trips to costco i'm i'm not exaggerating when i say like when you are there at roll up which is like rope drop for costco uh there is two short buses from assisted or independent living facilities sitting right out front unloading all of their passengers to just mill about at the costco true story Uh, so I've never gotten close to this thing, but every time I see it, I'm like, that's an interesting thing. What this is, is a bird feeder with a motion activated smart camera that is Bluetooth and wifi enabled right in the front of the bird feeder. So when this, when the bird lands on your bird feeder, it activates your camera and you get to watch this bird eat your bird food. Look at this shit. This isn't my camera yet. They give you a warning when you install the app to connect to your bird feeder. Be patient. It could take up to two weeks for your resident birds to, number one, feel comfortable. addressing your feeder and start eating at it. I've been yelling at the birds doing flybys of my bird feeder and not landing. So my family got me a bird buddy bird feeder for Father's Day this year. I got it set up. It was number one. So it's about the size of a blink doorbell. |
Andrew | Mm-hmm. |
Everett | Mm-hmm. small tv remote fire stick roku take your pick a little bit thicker so this model has a solar charger on the roof of the bird feeder that plugs into your camera so theoretically you're not going to have to pull it out and charge it very often you've got a live streaming option and here's where i got super excited and this isn't the level of excited that i expected to get because i wanted to get one of these and i'm like i don't know Also, I'm not going to fight through the crowd of old ladies. It takes pictures every time a bird lands on your bird feeder. It pushes it through an AI thing. I'm not even sure what to, algorithm perhaps? Yeah, yeah, probably. Some sort of bird identifier. Yeah, so some AI bird identifier. It identifies the bird that's on your feeder, takes a picture of it, and creates you this little postcard. And it seems like it can identify different, not different species of birds, but different birds of the same species. And then you can give them fucking names. Like, hey, Wallace is here. You can name the birds that are visiting your feeder. And I am for it. So right now, Bird Buddy is doing a Father's Day sale. I never would have bought one of these for myself. Because they're $200. Yeah, that's a lot of money. Just get a Blink camera and stuff it into a bird feeder. It wouldn't be as good, though. It would not be as good. The software is what you're paying for. Yeah, you're paying for the software. There are memberships that allow you to share your live stream with other people. You can share your postcards for free with up to 10 other people. I'm elated right now. Half of the time I've been on this show, I've been watching a live stream just waiting for a bird to land. Yeah, that's my other thing. I am so excited to be getting snapshots of the birds that land on my bird feeder. There may be a page that goes on the Watch Clicker website, which is just a live stream of Andrew's. Well, I'm not going to pay for the membership to provide everyone a link for the live stream. But there's got to be a way to share it with the page to just show you guys all my birds. all this hose. Yeah. But I mean, so my thing is, and we've been really revitalizing and rejuvenating our backyard and adding like plants and garden things and produce and flowers and trying to rehab the backyard. I, for the first time ever, genuinely complimented Andrew's front yard today. As my front yard suffers drought conditions, Andrew's front lawn looks terrific. It is looking good. Relatively well cut. It is looking good. I need to find a better way to mow around those flagstones. You need better flagstones. Yeah, they were... They were a stopgap. Andrew, I've got another thing. Do me. You've got it in front of you. It is... I think the nicest booze I've ever purchased. Okay. That's not true. |
Andrew | Okay. |
Everett | I've purchased nicer boozes. More expensive scotches. It's the nicest American whiskey I've ever purchased. So this is a 16-year-old bourbon from Calumet. And it is... Is it local? Phenomenal. No, it's not local. We live in the Northwest, you weirdo. Calumet is a local... thing isn't it Calumet Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey single rack black Calumet has a like a triple crown horse racing horse racing thing that they do but what this is is a 16 year aged they call it citation in honor of the triple crown winner but what this is kentucky whiskey that's been stored for 16 years and it is a 19 barrel batch 106 proof 53 fantastic whiskey you know what was the tell on this whiskey is that bottle shape that 750 mil wine bottle shape that is a really uniquely Kentucky whiskey bottle shape. So here's what I get. I get like no sharp edges. 16 year. So when people say, oh, it smells young. Nope. Nope. Nope. It's all balanced. And that's when, as you get older, the peaks and valleys condense. It's sweet, but it's also like vanilla. That 1792 foolproof butterscotch we got is still there. But just... I don't know how much this was. I want to say it was $170, which isn't crazy for booze. Well, for 16-year-old booze. It's got like grape juice and cotton candy sweetness notes to it. You couldn't afford to, but if you could afford to make this your daily drinker... That's the thing. At this level... That's why they're so expensive is because they're just so balanced. The high notes and the low notes have condensed down. Well, and you know, and at 16 years, I don't know what the angel share is at 16 years in Kentucky, but probably 65, 70%. Right. Perhaps. Yeah. And so, you know, you're getting a pretty refined product here. Really freaking good. Neither one of us taking taste. I have tasted it. Andrew has not. I don't want to say it's going to change your life because I think there are better boozes out there, but it is really very good and it's fairly accessible. I should have just taken it to the head like a fucking asshole. Oh man. It's really reminiscent of likeGood things? It tastes familiar. I think of the Pappy 21 or the 23. It's similar to that. Yeah, it's in the realm. And it's in the super balanced, really drinkable, super complex, but its complexities are really, really... Not a weeded mash bill, right? So you've got a rye front mash bill. So you're not going to get that like sweet roll that you get on the pappy. Definitely more of a, you're going to get the spice components versus a pappy. So a different type. But coming off the nose, the sweetness of the nose, you go right into like this spiced front. And then this really balanced like caramely. It's the oak. It's the oak. See, I wish we just started with this. You can't start with this, Andrew. You can't start with this. I wanted to have a little bit fresh palate and fresh brain going into this. My other thing for the week, Calumet 16. It's fucking phenomenal. Go get a bottle. We might just sit here. We might just sit here and talk about it for a while. So feel free to peace out. We're not going to turn the button off. We're just going to taste this and sit here. You can say goodbye if you want. I'll even play the music. I'm not going to. Not for a minute. But you can turn it off. Nothing else is interesting that's going to happen. That's good whiskey, man. That's fucking phenomenal. It's so good. Thanks for bringing that. You're welcome. You're welcome. I'm really happy. You should lock that up because I do have a key to your house. I know. I know that there are other things that you can get. Jack 14 or whatever. There are other whiskeys that are semi-available right now. But, you know, I've spent thousands of dollars on whiskey at this point, and I've never had anything like this. No. Golly, it's so good. Yeah, it's going to be like, you should bury that bottle in the backyard when it runs dry. And it's hard to beat it, right? It's hard to beat it. And at that price, like, honestly, for the drinkability... Yeah, I think that's... That's a good value, I would even argue. So I just took a sip of it. I just took a sip of it. And I got hot cocoa. Like, not... Oh, there's a little bit of a cocoa. It was like, oh, that tastes like fucking marshmallow hot cocoa. It is insane, you guys. It's insane. If you like bourbon, go find yourself a bottle of Calumet 16. Now, Calumet sells 14 and 15 also, which I understand are good. I think it'd be a fun vertical. But I think that the consensus is for not a lot more. If you can buy the 16, it's a sweet spot. That this is really where the expression has sort of. Is there any telling me at 14 in Eugene right now? I know that there's 15. They've got 15 at Bailey Hill right now. I'd be interested to try like a full vertical. The problem is it's all expensive. They're all about the same price point. Yeah, it's like $120, $140, $160, I think, is what they go for. And I'm just saying, $160? If this is any better than... I mean, this is fucking great. I think, though, you have to try the... Well, we might have to do a full vertical and determine if the extra $50 is actually worth it. I... I am not going to suggest that I'm an expert on whiskey because I'm not, Andrew. You're good at drinking it, though. I am really good at drinking it, and I've had quite a bit of it at this point. Yeah, we're in it. This is insane. Yeah, it's really good. Hey, guys, thanks for joining us for this episode of 40 in 20, the WatchClicker podcast. WatchClicker.com is our website.
