Speaker
Everett Hello fellow watch lovers, nerds, enthusiasts, or however you identify. You're listening to 40 and 20, the Watch Clicker podcast with your hosts, Andrew and my good friend Everett. Here, we talk about watches, food, drinks, life, and other things we like. Everett, how are you? I'm pumped. Yeah, I'm excited. You got a little creatine on board this morning and you just got your pump on. I got my pump on. No, but in fewer than 24 hours, many, many fewer than 24 hours at this point, I will be in Salt Lake. Actually, about 24 hours from right now or 22 hours from right now, I should be arriving at the base of Alta for three days of skiing. There's a little bit of a storm moving in right now. it's gonna be good, I'm excited, I'm pumped, I'm a little giddy, I'm a kid on Christmas Eve. As comfort wise, inhibiting as stormy days on the mountain are, the snow is so good. Oh yeah, no, I mean it's not really, it's actually kind of a low moisture storm right now, a relatively low moisture storm, so it should just be like three to five inches of powder over the next starting tonight over the course of the next sort of 48 hours. So yeah, it's gonna be, it's like the perfect storm. Is it? It's not a good thing. It's not. If I recall the movie, it's, it's not going to cause us discomfort or, uh, or peril, potential peril. Rather, it's going to provide us just free refills. Nice on everything. everything nice actually perhaps just snow but I think the rest of everything costs a lot of money but yeah no I'm pumped I'm getting excited Andrew how are you I'm good I also went to the mountain this past weekend yesterday in fact I took my nine-year-old up he is found in an absolute love for snow sports so as a result I I took him up and
Andrew I skied for the first time. I you know, I've had some first time first time ever. Yeah first time ever I've snowboarded a lot in my life and
Everett it's just a little bit, a little bit perilous for my, uh, my back.
Andrew So I, I opted to, I was like, you know what I understood, like with my kind of background in an athletic endeavors, my fairly reasonable understanding of how humans on us on a platform interact with snow.
Everett Uh, I think I can get this. So I didn't get a lesson or anything. I just rented skis and I got on them and I was like, Oh, okay.
Andrew Like I'm not a good skier by any means.
Everett I'm still a very, very beginner skier, but man, I got on the skis and within, you know, the first 30 minutes I had matched the skill level of my nine year old, perhaps even surpassed and was able to like monitor and kind of coach and help him throughout his day. Um, and not get hurt, but my butt cheeks are real sore. I think there's like a new muscle group use, and my knees and ankles hurt in a way that have never hurt coming off of a snowboard. And it's just because of the way you use those joints. But the weather was absolutely phenomenal. It was 60 degrees up there. Like the snow stayed tight, is a little crusty, but it wasn't like icy. Six zeros?
Andrew Yes. That's hot.
Everett hooking hot. The snow wasn't super sticky. No, it was bizarre. It was like the snow conditions were really fun. Uh, yeah, it was a, it was a lovely day on the mountain. That's great. There was a Nordic festival there. So like if you imagine a movie where people go to a ski resort where there's just like people are actually skiing in shorts and t-shirts and there's like a party in the parking lot. And it was that it was such a fun day at the mountain. Uh, I love that. I love that. I love that you skied. I'm not going to suggest you do anything I tell you to do. Um, but I did encourage you not to take a lesson at least at first because I, I, my, my suggestion to you was as a, as a snowboarder, someone with a lot of experience snowboarding, um, You're going to, you're going to wipe out a whole bunch of learning curve in your first like six hours on a mountain. And realistically, probably your first 20 hours on a mountain. You're going to, you're going to get through a lot of learning curve. And frankly, the odds of you picking up a bunch of bad habits in that time are so low. Now, now beyond that, I think that there is some risk that you pick up bad habits, things that are going to become harder to break over time, but you, you can take care of so much on your own. So I was happy to hear that you, uh, gave it a try. And I, and I was unsurprised to hear that you were like, Oh yeah. Okay. I can sort of understand the basics here.
Andrew Yeah.
Everett I, I, at the conclude at, at the last run, I had one, decent parallel turn. I couldn't quite get the parallel stop. I found I was over rotating and I think I was over rotating cause there wasn't enough pitch on the side of the mountain that we were using. So like trying, I think it was over rotating cause I wasn't carrying enough speed into it. And I was like really committing to my edges when I, when I didn't need to. Yeah. Uh, You know, I think one thing, I think that one thing that a lot of people struggle, at least in those first few days to understand, at some point you just sort of understand, like it just comes to you, or at least that was my experience, is that skiing is not really a two leg activity. Skiing is an alternating leg. It's more perhaps like riding a bike Yeah. Uh, then snowboarding is right in my head. I was, I was saying pedal. That's right. Yeah, that's right. You, you definitely, you, you know, you engage with the left foot as the right foot comes up and you engage with the right foot as the left foot comes up. And of course you're not going around in a circle perhaps, but, um, you're not oscillating, but the, the, the mechanics are the same. That's right. That's right. Your focus of weight as between the feet is very similar as, as it would be on a bike. I couldn't quite, I did try to get some single foot, like one leg up, what's it called?
Andrew Javelin turns. Javelin turns.
Everett I couldn't quite get it. And I honestly, I really do think it's because I wasn't carrying enough speed. Oh yeah, no, you definitely need a little bit of speed to be able to do a javelin turn. And because it was a pretty low angle. Bunny hill that we were using but beyond because you're there with your seven-year-old or eight-year-old nine-year-old who's snowboarded exactly once He's been on a snowboard for three hours. But yesterday he took two full bunny hill runs like without falling he like he had actual like carving turns I was like, Oh, maybe we should go all the way up because all the way up there, there's a, there's a green lane that can get you all the way down and we can spend, you know, an hour on an uninterrupted run. But I was like, eh, take it slow. It's better to take it slow than to have bad experience. That was, that was exactly my thinking. And it was also like right on the heels of seeing a bunch of snow machines run up the mountain and then pull somebody down in a stretcher and then the life flight helicopter landing. So he was like a little bit, he's like, that's a little scary up there.
Andrew Like, you know what?
Everett We'll just hang, we'll just kick it here. Well, so Andrew, to kick off today's show, I've just handed you a glass of whiskey. I'm not gonna tell you what it is. I figure we're gonna swirl this and drink it. We're gonna sip this over the course of the show. This is a special whiskey, okay? So that's all I wanna tell you.
Unknown Okay.
Everett That's all I wanna tell you. At some point, we'll catch up to this. This isn't my other thing. Uh, but as in terms of our rebrand to, to the whiskey and watches podcast paperwork is filed just to be super clear. Um, this, I thought this might be a fun little addition to today's. So, uh, so anyway, I'm just going to hand you that. We don't need to talk about it right now, but, but a little bit later we can talk about it. I just want, it's kind of a special whiskey. So, uh, take your time. Um, and, and, and, now my first impression it's super fruity like like cabernet barrel fruity Yes, I agree with that. I agree with that. Oh, okay. We're not here to talk about whiskey, nor are we here to talk about skiing or snowboarding for that matter, or Alta, the beautiful, beautiful, wonderful place that is Alta. Rather, we're here to talk about watches, and we got some watches to talk about. I was actually, Andrew, I was shocked. There was very little overlap. So I sent you my links. I didn't call anything. And I was like, I think, today, Andrew's going to come back and say, I actually don't have any extras. I was like, these are the ones I sent you what eight ish ish. Yeah. And I was like, these are, that's fine. There's eight watches. These are the ones we're going to talk about. And then you came back with one or two of the same, but really like six different watches to talk about. That means a couple of things. That means one, there was a lot happening this week. And two, there's no chance we're gonna talk about all these. I have some selections on mine that I don't mind pushing to the back.
Andrew I culled our overlap, but I sent, and there's still even some things that I'm like, eh, if we don't talk about it, we don't talk about it.
Everett I'm not super worried about it. But first thing that I wanna talk about is what got me most excited for this week. Could you give me just a touch more volume in my headphones? I sure can. Isn't that fun, you guys, that we can do that?
Andrew Andrew does that that's the one yeah, okay, perfect This is what we do this live you guys and my and my kids play with the board yeah In between recording sessions, so you like isn't it the fact that we get the volume right ever. It's just a miracle first I think one of the a Release that has gotten me more excited than than I can remember ever being surpassed, RZE.
Everett I knew, I knew, I knew you were gonna steal it. UTD 8,000 Ultra Hex Titanium. That's why you went so quick. I jumped right into this, because this is awesome. And this is awesome for a lot of reasons. So number one, RZE does really cool shit.
Andrew And that's just what they do. Some of it's a little bit too tool-y for my taste. Some of it's like a little bit too cool for my taste. I'm like, ah, you really pushed the envelope off the table on that one, and good for you. This is not that. This is a three window digital quartz, all titanium, bang and tool watch, perfectly sized. This is a 42 millimeter case, 50.2 lug to lug, 13.4 thick, sapphire crystal, grade two titanium, 200 meters of water resistance, And this is the most exciting part.
Everett 370 bucks on... MSRP, that's the MSRP. Yeah, because you can, there are some ways here in the next couple months that you can get it for significantly less, including a fun game.
Andrew But a like micro brand, small brand, digital titanium workhorse.
Everett I will be buying one. Yeah, you know what, Andrew? I think I might, too, especially well, we'll get into that later. But, you know, we I think we were maybe I don't know that we were slow on the on the take. I think that we were sufficiently there for RZ as they came out. You own an RZ, is that right? Um, am I just making things up? No, I have a brand that did something similar to RZE. I don't remember the name of it. In any event, in any event, I think that RZE was a brand that sort of was on our radar, but that maybe we, it took a little warming up. They were just a little bit too, cool for me. Almost like in the way FormX is just a little bit too much for me. And so there's a difference for me, and this is maybe my point, is that FormX, I really early understood FormX. RZ, it took me a little bit longer to separate RZ out from the chaff, I think and and that could be some of the stylistic decisions in particular with the with the resolute There's some things there that felt a little maybe still feel a little sort of I Yes, let's call it simple. Let's call it simple. And there are some really easy arguments why that's a bad take. I'm fine with that. I'm fine with saying that in this context. But I'm increasingly enamored by RZE with everything they're doing. It's like, oh, well, this is better than that. And this is really interesting. um they're some of their like coded watches i'm like what this is cool um but this is something different altogether different and and for me for me this is really cementing in my mind rze as a brand that we we have to be paying attention to at least in the space that we operate they're doing a thing that it it's kind of shocking that it hasn't already
Andrew been done at scale.
Everett I mean, the, the, I mean, some might say this has been done.
Andrew We can get back to that, but not in small brand watches, not in not mega brands. Right. And there's, there's been a few examples of digital watches from small brands. Um, but there, there are few and far between and none have gone so far as to do a full titanium case and bracelet. And this is killer, and at this price point.
Everett So I do want- This is like the micro brewery pub lager, right?
Andrew Yeah.
Everett Where it's like, this is a watch, everybody, this is a beer everybody's gonna like, that's easy to drink, that's made with better ingredients, with more attention to detail, and a little bit more je ne sais quoi. Panache. So here's the, Here's the game. Yeah, give us the rundown here. Give us specs, give us details. I gave us the specs real quick.
Andrew So this watch is kind of a round, screwed down bezel on kind of an RZE case, not kind of an RZE case, but a case that's really familiar for pushers to operate your quartz digital watch.
Everett It has all of the functionalities that you want of a digital watch. Um, I do kind of wonder how the light is. I imagine it's probably fantastic because it's so easy. It's going to be, it's going to be, um, it looks like we have three color ways. I would say it looks exactly like there are three colorways.
Andrew We have a yellow, a blue and a black. There is a black with a negative display.
Everett in this all titanium case, like this is, can we, is right now the time we comment on the black display? Should we? I mean, well, we must. Please do. It's fair to call this, I think, I think I'm gonna say it's fair to call this colorway, this color combination derivative. It is, all right, all right, hold on, hold on, hold on. Give me 30 seconds here. There are some really, really obvious criticisms of this whole platform. This is very much a watch that you will feel like you've seen before. If you don't know what I'm talking about, just Google RZUTD8000. This feels very much like a MRG or a MTG or whatever. This is, I'm getting one of the, I'm getting that wrong. I think MTG. This, I mean, we've got a printed bezel at 12 and six. We've got four screws. I mean, you just simply can't deny that RZ was doing a thing here. I'm okay with it. except for perhaps this blacked out. And frankly, I'm okay with it even then, because it sort of strips any, it strips any even plausible deniability away. RZ is like, yes, that is what we're doing. Yes, 100%. And we're okay with it. And we're so okay with it that we're just gonna show you that this is exactly what we're doing. They're not trying to pull the wool over anyone's eyes here. But that is a very fair and a very good criticism that this is very derivative of a G-Shock MTG. Okay, so I don't need to say anything else about it. I'm sorry that that restrained the bounds of your patience with me, and I appreciate that you have allowed it.
Andrew starting on March 20th you can pre-order this on a titanium bracelet for $169 now they also have a fun game where you can print from any printer a paper model of this watch and if you can complete the model They will reduce the price. And post a picture on socials. And post a picture, right? So they're getting some word of mouth marketing. I'm sure it's probably not an easy model to complete. You can get a discount of $30 on that price. I will be ordering one of these on March 20th.
Everett These are fantastic and I am gonna get you're gonna get the bracelet though, right?
Andrew Obviously, okay Yeah, you you don't get a titanium watch with the titanium bracelet option and not get the titanium bracelet option We're like at 329 or 2 is it?
Everett 329 or 299 if you've done the model for the titanium on the 20th I
Andrew No, on the 20th, 169. So it's tiered pricing on their pre-order release. Yeah. 169 on the, after the 31st, it goes up to 199. After the campaign, regular MSRP goes to 219 on the strap or 369 on a bracelet.
Everett I may be a misunderstanding, like maybe I'm not fully literate. You know what, Andrew? I think, so I'm not seeing this here, so you've linked to the Fratello website, but I feel like I saw that it was 329 was the introductory on the bracelet.
Andrew Maybe that's the case. I'm gonna buy it. Yeah, I mean, I think even then, it's terrific. It's a full titanium, awesome digital watch. I think derivative is not inappropriate, I also think that... Yeah, that's right.
Everett So limited quantities will be available for pre-order at promotional launch pricing of $169 USD on a custom elastic strap or $329 USD with the strap and bracelet until 11.59 p.m. SGT March 31st 2025 so that so yeah, there is a price difference, but even then 329 and if you do the the paper model I think that makes it to 99. This is terrific.
Andrew Yeah.
Everett Yeah, I'm I'm absolutely gonna do this There's no doubt about it. The blacks gonna be the most popular The the yellows cool though. I like I'm part of me is kind of like I have a I have black already like why not just get a yellow I This thing's incredible. This is one of the, so like I said, it's not inappropriate to call this derivative.
Andrew I think derivative is a little bit too derogatory of a term for something that we haven't seen done in this space before.
Everett Titanium, digital, super affordable.
Andrew I don't, where can you get a titanium watch for under 400 bucks?
Everett Grade two titanium coated, hardened coat, there are ultra hex, hardened coating. I mean, it's fantastic. CR2032 battery, which is super easy to find and cheap, three-year battery life. Is there a titanium watch at this price point? It's certainly there. Certainly there are two. She certainly there is. Yes. Arkin poor upload.
Andrew Yeah.
Everett But, uh, I, it doesn't make this not a terrific value in great deal. These are, these are cool shit. I'm with you, man. I'm with you. This is so cool. Who thought that we would get this excited about a small brand doing a digital watch? I mean, we like raced to the finish line to talk about it first. We're pumped. I'm pumped. You're pumped. The days of being excited about a brand releasing an automatic watch are done.
Andrew You should be digital.
Everett You at home, you in your car should be pumped. I want notice to do like a. Like an LC, like like redo the LCD Navitimer. We commented last week, Andrew, that, like, I can't remember exactly what the context was, but that we had a conversation about the resurgence of the 90s in watches, right? That was just last week, I'm fairly certain, maybe two weeks ago. And the 90s are alive in Portland Speaking of g-shock and we weren't speaking of g-shock G-shock heard my comments, and they were like hold my beer I just finished the Chronicles of Riddick, and I've put on my Oakley sunglasses, and I got a fucking watch for you. So, have you seen this? I hate it. I hate it.
Andrew I hate this more than your... than your little G. I hate it.
Everett I hate everything about it. So G-Shock this last week announced a Chinese market only watch, for now, Chinese market only, called the G-Shock GA-V01 Cool Eyes, all one word, Cool Eyes. Blah con on Teddy says The new the wild new g-shock GA won't be 101 cool eyes goes where no Casio has gone before I'm not exactly sure what he means by that and they shouldn't have gone They went to where the light didn't touch. What were those wraparound? What were the wraparound Oakley's with like they have like a hole on the temples that like? anyway, uh Yeah Uh, this is... Although, I think if you were to pair these with a pair of, uh, this neon green one with some green pit vipers, I think you'd be ballin'. If Casio and Oakley had done a watch collaboration in 1996, this would be it. Yep. This would be it. In fact, I still am surprised when I look at the dial and I don't see an Oakley logo. Like, yet. I'm not gonna make any effort to describe this. There's no describing it. And we should not. You just need to look. Google G-Shock Kool-Aids. Kool-Aids, all one word. It looks like a modernist splat painting. There's nothing, we cannot tell you anything. We cannot do it justice, I guess. So according to Casio, the V stands for vision, and the O1 stands for breakthrough. This is wild, man. This is wild. Have you noticed the sub-dials, Andrew, are like sunglasses or perhaps cat eyes? That's why it's the vision. That's why Oakley's about to jump on this.
Andrew It's huge. I will say one thing that I do like, that I think is creative, and I think outside of this application, I would maybe like the mark, the indices.
Everett are not on the dial. The hands pass under them. They're like a piece of resin that's integrated into the case.
Unknown Like teeth.
Everett Yeah. It kind of looks like the pit monster from Star Wars. Yeah. Or perhaps a Sega monster with those. I mean, you just have to see it, you guys. You don't, though. You just don't. I think it might be better off without. So these are 120 bucks. They're Chinese market only. They are available soon, if not now. They're 58.2 millimeters wide, 19 to hair under 20 thick, and a lug to lug of 49.1, so it's probably fairly wearable. 74 grams, so they weigh nothing. Okay, man. This is so weird. This is such a weird release for 2020. Did they create a character? There is. Or is that like a Chinese cartoon or character? Oh, you know what? I don't know that there's any collaboration. If that is an existing, if the Kulai's character is an existing thing, I'm unaware. Let's just give it a quick. It doesn't look like it. Kulai's China? It looks like a, uh, like a floating submarine mine. I don't see anything like that. Venom's eyes. It's a, it's a thing it's bizarre comes in black white purple and slime green it's bizarre like nickelodeon slime green i'm with you though that they yeah this is definitely like not the part of the 90s that we intended this is more like the the guts Like if these, if, if guts had had promotional watches that they gave the competitors how maybe they did, but let's just imagine a world in which they do. And this, this is a good candidate for the, the contestants on guts to have received to finish their competition. I haven't thought about that show in probably since it stopped airing. Well, you're welcome. Thanks. Uh, yeah. What's next, Andrew? Oh, hold on. Let's do a check-in. Have you had a sip yet? I haven't had a sip. I'm letting it breathe. What we've done with this, we've now been breathing for a half hour. I think that that's a good amount of time. We've talked about two watches. Uh, and so maybe we need to move a little faster, but yeah. I'm not going to make any, I'm not, I'm not going to say anything. I want to know. I want to know your opinion. So you just had your first sip. That's good. Really good, right?
Andrew Yeah.
Everett The heat, like, all evaporates off, but it's still there. It's, like, maple-y, like, almost, like, oily. It just coats your tongue with, like, not, like, that bright, florally flavor that you get on the nose, but, like, really dark, sweet, molasses-y. It does have a bit of a mouthfeel to it that surprised me. Like, some cherry, like, dark bing cherry. And breakfast. That's how I get breakfast. Yeah, like I want this on a crepe. Yes, that's right. Or on a waffle. Or perhaps the waffle's in here already. Perhaps, that's really good.
Andrew I'm gonna go, since we're in a little bit of a weird zone, I'm gonna hang in there. Share kid's watch, an educational tool for little grownups. And we have both done some watch selecting for kids up at this point. As I imagine, many of you have, because of your deep interest in watches, your kids are naturally very interested in your watches, and you don't want them touching them, because they have sticky fingers, which is why I'm not allowed in IWC boutiques. I sauced up a big pilot one time, because I'd just eaten the salt lick. Anyhow. So this is kind of the upgraded kids watch. You know, we've talked about a lot of resin cases, a lot of digital, a lot of, uh, really inexpensive courts.
Everett Um,
Andrew this is an upgrade to that and they have a really creative educational mechanism in their dial so on first blush it looks like a roulette style dial with white and gray but what you as you look at it you're like oh that's the that's the full hour so at the alternating colors, there is the numeral marker of what that hour represents.
Everett And the whole idea of this is that it's teaching kids ideally, or maybe you could get this for adults who look at the analog clock on the wall in a classroom and are like, where's my phone?
Andrew What time is it?
Everett The alternating colors show that, yes, while the hour hand is in this hour, this is the hour that you're working on, and then you read the minute. It's also attractive. It's a steel-cased, what movement are they using? I don't know that they've actually told us what movement it is, but it's a quartz movement.
Andrew Yeah, so, no, 2035 Miyota. Okay, there we go. So a Miyota 2035. 32 millimeter case, nine millimeters thick, 100 meters of water resistance with a screw down crown, sapphire crystal, full loom dial, silicone rubber strap, 120 US dollars.
Everett This is like- Did you say fully loom dial? Because fully loom dial. Yes, full loom dial. These are awesome. These are really cool.
Andrew Like these, this is something that I would wear, but what, like, I think the idea of this, of capturing the imagination and the watch loving and watch reading of kids to upgrade them from your F81 or, or, or F84 or F91, or, you know, that bullshit. on the spin, the spinning jewelry display case.
Everett Now you're getting a full steel case, real water resistance, a screw down crown, like real watch shit with a decent enough movement. This is cool. Yeah. I mean, I don't know that I, I don't know that the releases have been concentrated enough to call it a trend, but there does seem to be something like a trend, um, in this market space. Caravera a few years back introduced Parchee, which, um, I assume is still a going concern. These were aluminum. Um, there's the block that block BLOK watches. Um, I think Flick Flack watches have, have had a, sort of are having a moment. So this is kind of in that vein, but I think I like this as just a watch. I like this better than any of those aforementioned brands. I really like the Parchee watches and they were 50 bucks. This is 100, it's steel, which may account for some of that price.
Andrew But it's also well-designed. It's an attractive watch.
Everett We have skeletonized hands In the dimensions 32 by 9 thick fantastic it's gonna be great for kid-sized wrists because my you know, I was in the car yesterday for a good chunk of time and My nine-year-old is talking to me about like watches I like to wear and why I like to wear them and I was like he he introduced this conversation.
Andrew And he was asking about what watches he thinks, or what watches I think he should wear and like. And I was like, well, honestly, you're little right now. So you're a little limited in the watches that will fit you. But as you get older, if you continue to still care, we can start sizing you into things. And then I find this watch and I'm like, man, this is maybe the next one for him.
Everett I think so. Of the ones we've mentioned today, I think that this is really, you know, I do think they probably need a little bit more versatility. This is, this is definitely a, I don't want to call it austere.
Andrew It's a 32 millimeter field watch.
Everett But it's, you know, with white, I think that they could play with color a little bit more than they have here. They maybe can play with color. I'll be optimistic with that suggestion. But assuming this is a future brand that's gonna continue to develop, there's a lot of opportunity here. And actually, personally, for my personal taste, I really like what they've done. In fact, I think if they release this alongside a blue, and a green and a red or, you know, pink, magenta or something, I'd be like, this is freaking rad. But this would be my favorite. Right? Yeah. And the full loom is dope. Dope. Super, super great. Yeah. So although I think they should have done more with color, they might just be feeling out the market. And I do think they should do more with color. Given those possibilities, this would have been my favorite of those possibilities. So I think they should have done it. I still like this one the best, assuming they do do it. Do do. Notice notice released a cool watch. This is so this is a sector watch. Notice is definitely investing time, energy and resources into their sector line and their collaborations are oftentimes in the sector line. This is no different. It's a good platform to collaborate from. It's a great platform. We've got a collaboration with Beers and Cameras, which is a website and community regarding primarily analog photography. If you've dabbled in analog photography at all, you may have come across Beers and Cameras because they're a pretty big online community. They're calling this the Obscura. An homage to the camera, Obscura. I would say. I don't know that for sure, but I'd be shocked if that wasn't the case, and it's it's got a really fun complication. It's a photographer's slide rule. It's got a really fun complication. So yes, as Andrew said, this is, I mean, that's actually not entirely accurate, but it's close enough.
Andrew What this is- It's not inaccurate even a little.
Everett What this is, is an exposure gauge that does the calculations from the quote unquote sunny 16 rule for you. So Sunny 16 rule is when you're out and about you're taking analog photography and maybe the meter on your 1968 Pentax is not up to snuff or maybe doesn't work at all. There is a guide that you can use called Sunny 16 and essentially what it does is based on whatever speed of film You know, we're used to the exposure triangle with digital cameras. You have the exposure triangle and you can move all three pieces, perhaps not independently, but you can move all three pieces to effect. So if you really want to get at that. wide open, dreamy, shallow depth of field, you maybe you're gonna crank your ISO all the way down, you know, 100 or 50 some cameras so that you can get that. Well, if you have film in your camera, the ISO is dictated by the film. So if you were at a concert and you have some 1600 in your camera and you go out on a sunny day, you're gonna struggle. That is no longer a variable in film. And so there's this rule, the Sunny 16, where- It's no longer a variable in digital. It is a variable in digital. In film photography, it's only a variable to the extent that you are swapping film stocks. Right, which you you can do and in fact, you can even do that mid-roll. Although that's a bit of a tricky operation I've done it before not super fun, but you can you you want wind the film and then you put it and you make a marking on the film canister that says I was at 16 shots and And then when you put it back in, you load it to, you know, perhaps 17 shots. So you're gonna have a little bit of a gap. You can do it. It's not, it's not super fun and a little scary, but really you're set to that one ISO. So you use the sunny 16. This gives you with the bezel, and the ReHot working combination, you turn this big white marker, you turn this big white marker to your ISO that you've got, or to your preferred f-stop, excuse me, on the ReHot, and then based on the ISO you have, it's gonna give you a calculation, how long your shutter speed should be. This is a slide rule. Okay, I think that's actually, Not a terrible comparison, although different in some meaningful ways.
Andrew It's certainly different in its application.
Everett It's a little bit different in its manipulation, but this is a quick calculating device on your watch to give you high level, fast computations. So the layout here is actually something that was patented by Juan Martinez, who is the founder of Beers and Cameras, patented a few years back, and ostensibly, Notice and Juan Martinez have been working on this watch for a while, perhaps as much as five years. And we know how that goes, right? Here's an idea and you get back to it and you get back to it. Anyway, very, very cool. It is an incredibly attractive watch. The bezel makes this interesting in a way that no other in my mind, no other notice sector has ever been interesting. And it's just terrific. This is super fun.
Andrew The one and most important question I have about this watch is where the
Everett marketing shots taken with film? I would say at least some of them appear to be, Andrew. So, for instance, that Definitely taken with film. Yeah agreed that is definitely taken with film hard to say though, right? But yeah, it looks to me like at least Some if not, all of these marketing photos are film this definitely film. So yeah.
Andrew Yeah. Yeah, I think I really answer is yes And it's notice pricing 650 bucks 650 bucks, yeah
Everett Since we're talking about collaboration, that's film. Yeah, yes, yes.
Andrew Okunosuke and Wind Vintage with an Atwood limited edition colorway. I I this is Okunosuke usually like I see him. I'm like, OK. Like that works, but they've never really like just nothing's really hit me right. But this this colorway on this Atwood, it just it did it for me. It's this great, great kind of purpley gray that is really complemented by the blue they use in their logo and on their on the the minute ring bright orange. Chronograph hand, good orange on the three o'clock sub-dial. And you know, it's an Atwood chronograph, right? There's not a whole lot to say about here, but the color combination just nails it for me.
Everett They're only making 25, which is kind of a bummer. Pricing is three times what it would be from any other brand that you know and would want to get.
Andrew Yep, three grand.
Everett Price for the clasp are gonna be wiggity whack. 50 meters of water resistance. The colorway just sung to me though.
Andrew This is my favorite Oken Oscar color combination ever. And since now we're through collabs.
Everett Andrew, do you remember hearing about this Cornell watch company last year, 2023, something like that? They came out with a watch that was going to be like, in theory, or at least, or at least aspirationally, they wanted to revive the American watch brand. Do you remember this? I very vividly remember it and almost laughing it off as like, good luck. Well, I think it's a cool idea. So John and Chrissy Warren are the owners of Cornell Watch Company now, which is a relaunched company, a relaunched American watch company that existed prior to really the wristwatch era. So they were a pocket watch company. Cornell Watch Company was pocket watches. This was revived in 2023 as an attempt to revive luxury watchmaking in America at scale. So certainly there are American watches being made today. RGM is perhaps the most sort of notable entry. RGM makes a few hundred watches per year spread out over its model line. These are Very, very nice watches. Excellent. Maybe not aesthetically for everybody's taste. And I would say that's true for me. I rarely see an RGM watch that I'm like, gotta have it. And of course, that's not the only example. There's a handful of American watchmakers doing it all there, but not at scale, right? That's right. Not even 200 watches a year. So somewhat ironically, Cornell's first release came out, I believe, with 15 build slots for their 1870 classic enamel watch, which is absolutely gorgeous. Looks every bit of a historic or a vintage Cornell pocket watch, however designed to be worn on your wrist, not in your pocket. I can't remember how much they were. They were expensive because of what it was. Fully made in the United States, I think with imported movements? Anyway, moving on. So of the 15, I think there was also a piece unique for auction. In between then and now, Zach Smith, who owns Our Precision, which is a micromachining workshop that makes medical components, aerospace components, semiconductor, and micromachines. And Smith, I believe, has work, experience working with, like, watch stuff. or at least the machines that make watch stuff. So our precision and... Our Precision and Cornell and now RGM are all gonna kind of work together to sort of combine skills with a new vertically integrated manufacturing capability within Cornell to make, I think the aspirational number is like a thousand watches per year. And that's not an insignificant amount. That's a, that's a healthy amount of watches to market. That's right. That's right. Um, and, and they're going to do that all within, I believe within our precision. So our position is going to be precision. It's going to be the manufacturer and both RGM and Cornell will work. So they both lended their capabilities and they're going to anyway. I'm not completely certain what the long term relationship with RGM and Cornell is based on this hour precision. Anyway, we'll see the two hurdles they're going to have to overcome. is the the dollar sign that's going to proceed.
Andrew That's going to be big. These are coming.
Everett These new ones. So they're going to make more of these is 1870 C. And we'll talk about the watch a little bit, too. But twelve thousand bucks, you're going to they're going to have to find a way to overcome that. And I think kind of the cornerstone of being able to do that is not a decorated movement, a fucking baller movement is what they need to do. Like it needs to be
Andrew You know, first of its kind, almost, and their design is fantastic.
Everett These are really attractive, really lovely watches. They, like, evoke the feels of all these hierology, Swiss brands.
Andrew And the challenge is, identifying themselves as an American brand, not in competition with old Swiss. Yeah. Right. We're doing the same stuff. We've got these in-house movements that are fantastic. Our manufacturing processes are fantastic. We're not competing with the Swiss.
Everett They, we exist in the same space and I think that's the hurdle they're going to have to overcome. Well, so let's talk a little bit about the movement. So, so these, these 1870 CEs are going to use Swiss Swartz Etienne movements. Um, but they, they do, they have started R and D process with our precision to make a fully in-house modification of an hour precision movement that will be used in these. So, but like you said, there's going to be a challenge there. It's gotta be something relatively scalable production wise. But we'll see what happens.
Andrew Because modified movements are not like, that's hard, that's time consuming, it's manufacturing heavy. Finding a way to not be in competition with the Swiss is going to be the problem.
Everett In the marketing, like to the consumer, we're not in competition with the Swiss. So long story short, and this is a third problem for me, Andrew, is the watch itself. And I say a problem, this is not gonna be a problem for everybody, but I'm just gonna say that I think this is a problem. These watches are, IMO, a little stodgy. And when I look at RGM's catalog, I think the same thing, stodgy, stodgy, stodgy, stodgy. So, and, Everybody's got different tastes, but if we're going to do a made in America watch company, we should not do production RGM. That's what I think. Yeah. And to me, this, that's, to me, that's what this looks like. This looks like production RGM. So this is a beautiful grand few enamel. Uh, I always think I'm saying that word wrong and I probably am because I probably am. grand fleece there. There are 39 by 10 millimeter cases 11 three to the crystal so so good size 39. They're slab sided though the lines aren't they they are very much they are slab sided and that is the design of this watch that is for sure what they're trying to do. But again, that brings me back to my big criticism. If you're just going to do production RGM, I'm probably out. But that does appear to be the aesthetic, that does appear to be the way they're going with it. And so I'm gonna reserve judgment on that issue, but that is my big concern at this point. Claude lugs are lovely, but the case profile, it's impossible to say this watch isn't beautiful, because it's stunning, tip to tail.
Andrew It's absolutely gorgeous. I don't know, I'm having trouble paletting the, I'm having trouble reconciling.
Everett Yeah, and finding a place for this watch in my head. For me, I want them to do something a little different. I'm on board. I'm with them. I'm excited, but I want them to do something a little different. They need to hook up with the folks at RZE probably.
Andrew You know what I'm I'm not even remotely disappointed about for a couple of reasons. Number one is that it's an Umtanium.
Everett The Laurent Ferrier Classic Traveler Globe Night Blue. I saw this watch and immediately lamented, man, I'm never going to get to have this watch. I'm never going to get to see one of these in person.
Andrew Yeah.
Everett It is gorgeous, so this is the. Classic traveler globe night blue in the center of this dial. Is the nighttime light signature view of? The planet Earth spread across your dial. All enameled, just absolutely gorgeous left side in your 9 o'clock you have a.
Andrew Almost like a, I don't know, about a two hour open faced window, right? We got half of the top, half of the bottom. For your second time zone, manipulated forward and backward by pushers on the left side of the case. Beautiful oniony crown on the right side.
Everett Gorgeous crown.
Andrew Best part of this watch.
Everett It really is. Which is saying a lot because the rest of this watch is fantastic.
Andrew And the crown is just slightly depressed into the side of the case, date window on the right side, really legible hands. I think this is maybe the most legible application of a GMT that is out there, right? You have your two hand hours and minutes.
Everett on your primary dial and then that nine o'clock window is your second time zone displayed digitally or analog like an analog digital display just with numerals on a disc that also freely rotates with the rest of the movement. I agree with you about the legibility portion, but I think my brain might struggle to do the math. You don't have to do any math, just to be really clear. But I think my brain might struggle to make the connection between the number I'm seeing and what that means for the time. Is that funny to say? Uh, no, not at all, because when I when I wear a GMT, I I go right to the GMT hand because I keep it set like my my GMT hour is my time zone. Sure. I don't look at the other hands. I just find my GMT hand. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Like Meister Singery. They had a good release this week, too. They did. We're not going to talk about it because we don't have time. But this is just absolutely gorgeous.
Andrew It's the the dimensions on it are Where are we? A 41 millimeter case. It doesn't matter.
Everett 1264 thick, 30 meters of water resistance. 90,000 Swiss francs. Andrew, did I say the crown was the best part? Fucking. Because it's not, the hands are the best part. The hands are really good, but I'm gonna say I think it's really the crown. And also the display back, the movement underneath the display back. It's just a gorgeous $90,000 watch. I looked at it just to like, I don't know, hurt myself. I mean, I would never spend that much money on a watch. Realistically, I would never spend that much money on a watch. If I had that much money to spend on a watch, this is the watch I would buy. But when I see this, I don't feel bad about the amount of money that they're asking, knowing what's gone into it and the craftsmanship and everything else. I'm like, yeah, that probably is fair. For a guy who knows nothing about $90,000 watches, that feels- It's like a five-time baked enamel painting. Yeah, yeah. Full meal deal. It's just... Okay, I'm going to talk about exactly one more watch, and I'm trying to decide which of the two I'm going to talk about, and I've made a decision. Thank you. The Vulcain. Vulcain. That's how you say that, right? So, Volcaine famous for its alarm president cricket watch. Maybe not just famous for that, but oftentimes I think that's probably the watch most people think about when they think about Volcaine. Two or three or maybe even four years ago, I don't know. We've been doing this so long. Some of this stuff blends together. For some time, Volcaine released a skin diver that we really liked. It was a time only, they called it the Skin Diver Nautique, I believe, which was a resurrected model from Volcanes catalog, which turns out is more than just their president cricket watches. And this was very much, this was very much a really sort of classic skin diver, which is to say like a recreational diving watch, right? It had big square hands. It kind of has aged loom. It's a gorgeous, gorgeous, lovely watch that I had very little to criticize about. Not a cheap watch, but 38 millimeters, 12.2 height. Again, this is the, Three-hand time only and they came in at about 1500 Euro I think so they've now released a a second re-release and this is the Vulcane skin diver chronograph and I'll tell you what Andrew I'll tell you what. I want to not like it, but I do. I like it. So a little different than the Skindever Nautique, which is not just because it's a chronograph. This is an age case where the Skindever Nautique was not. And in fact, if I was going to criticize that watch, that would be it. This is an age case, which welcome, welcome to my life. It is, a fully modern watch. They've modernized the case size just a little bit, I believe. So up from I think 37-ish to almost 40, 39.7. We're 13 thick, very 1960s style, circular brush surface on top, brushed flanks, polished bevel. Um, and I hate to say perfect when we talk about watches because nothing's perfect, but I'm going to say this is borderline perfect. We've got a 7750 or whatever, uh, 53, 7753. 200 meters water resistance, a modern ceramic, etched ceramic crown. We have a very fresh and tight white dial, panda, or perhaps reverse panda is what we call that, I think, which just looks clean AF. Andrew, is that fair?
Andrew I think that's the right language to use.
Everett And then we've got a more sort of retro-inspired black dial. And I say retro-inspired because I think we've got a very seventies colorway. Reminds me a little bit of that Nevada Chrono something or the other. And definitely has that racing chronograph that just came out. And some aged loom. Some aged loom. So like orange and aged loom. And it just definitely looks a little bit more retro versus vintage. This is a really good execution of faux tina in the loom too. It's not bad, Andrew. It's not bad. I think I would like this better if they had stayed austere on both. You know, I'm a critic of Fotina, and I'll admit that. It's not always perfectly fair, but I don't think it's an unfair criticism to have, generally speaking. This is a good execution of it, and I don't hate it. The execution on the hands and the bezel is perfect. Yeah, it's very nice. The loom plots on the markers is just a touch too yellow. So we're looking at $3,000 for a 200-meter 7750 watch, which is, you know. It's in the zone. It's in the zone. It's maybe on the high side of the zone for my personal comfort level. But at a 13-millimeter thickness on this, which for 200 meters and 13 millimeters.
Andrew With a 7750?
Everett With a 7750, they've done some good things here. Great brand. Great dial, great details, at least as far as we can tell. Ceramic bezel. All the spec sheets say this is going to be absolutely fantastic. I think that's right. I think that's right. Beautiful pushers. I mean, they're not breaking any ground here. No, they just executed everything well. It looks, it appears to me to be excellent.
Andrew How many times do we look at a new Field Watch and go, whew, nailed it yeah that's right it's not groundbreaking or even like stova's release of a watch that i'm pretty sure exists that i really liked
Everett So they're selling these, you can get them on Volcanes sort of basket tropic. You can get it on a few different leather straps. They also are marketing this heavily on a one piece, a sort of like 60 style one link bracelet that looks terrific. There is a single marketing photo. I don't believe that you can buy this on it, but there is a single marketing photo on a beads of rice. And I do kind of wish I do kind of wish that we could get this on a Beads of Rice, but I'm not sure that we can. Let's see. I'm not sure that we can.
Andrew They don't even have the... They don't have it on their website yet.
Everett Yeah. It's brand new. It's brand new.
Andrew The embargo probably dropped like three days ago, but it's not, it's not available to view on their website yet.
Everett That's right. So we don't actually know. We don't actually know what we're going to be able to get, but. Fair price? It's not cheap, but fairly priced. Reasonable for what you're getting and who you're getting it from. Yeah, and from Vulcan. I mean, I think that all of a sudden you start to think like, OK, this is this is about right. Um, have we done it? Well, Andrew, we've done it unless there's anything else you want to talk about. Uh, I want to speed round through a, um, a Gaku Okada's unique graduation product.
Andrew Gaku Okada is a, Okada maybe, is a Japanese, uh, student. He is graduating under the tutelage of, um, Hajime Asukada. The student loves watches and he loves jazz drumming. So what he's done is created the first and only currently in existence wrist worn metronome. So it's this big ass looking watch that is fully a metronome as his graduation project. to reconcile those two passions. It's really lovely. It's really cool. And the technology to go into a metronome while worn on the wrist and keep it in time is really interesting.
Everett And I think there's cool things to come out of that innovation. And it's a, I don't know exactly what the deal is. This is using ball bearings. Ball bearings and a piston. Which we talked about when we talked about the Otsuka Low Tech, number five. Yes, so it seems to me that's something that we're gonna see more and more. There's some cool stuff happening in Japanese watch R&D. Yeah, there's always cool things. Um, do I have anything to speed around, Andrew? Uh, Citizen announced a new brand. I can't tell if this is full marketing or not. It seems to me like this is probably more than anything marketing of Citizens. I think increasingly sort of uh cluttered brand space so they're they're combining i think the series 8 and the atessa models under a premier label although it doesn't seem to me like they're getting rid of series 8 or atessa anyway they released two watches these both are gorgeous One of them is a EcoDrive Atessa, one of them is a Series 8 Mechanical. Why delineate the brand that's already so fractured?
Andrew I have more questions than answers. Disjointed anyway. Like, oh no, and this is the Citizen Premier now.
Everett Yeah, that's right. Okay. Worn and Wound has released the third of their Nevada Grinch and Dado Master trilogy. Sadly, this time, I don't believe they're releasing these with any Valjoux 72s. They're just VK63s, but it's beautiful, sort of a minty green with Red accents, really, really gorgeous watch. If you like these and you've considered buying one, I think this is a great, a great example. It's a small sort of classic Nevada chronograph. Nevada does great work. I almost always like Warren and Maron collabs, and this is a good one. Yeah, we can be done. I think we can be done. Hanhart released their 415ES, which is their chronograph that we talked about last year, in a new and perhaps better colorway, this time without Fotina and just nicer. Leica released the ZM12 and I think that they are increasingly showing that they make a really good watch. They're still missing for me in terms of size and design and price. I mean, these are like $6,000 watches. I think it's not excellent.
Andrew $6,000 watch.
Everett I think it might be. I mean, when you look at these, like, I don't know that there's anybody doing as much sort of, innovative manufacturing on the scale they are is like they are. They are really doing a lot of work in terms of horological chops. We're not going to talk about this watch in detail because we're just going to move it along, but it's worth a look. I'll just say, I think Leica could be on their way to being a legitimate watch brand. Um, and, and take it from me, I don't know what the fuck I'm talking about. They're already a legitimate watch brand. However, in my mind, they're not quite there.
Andrew On a watchlet or a watchlet, a watch and a bracelet on titanium is 70, 80, 300 bucks.
Unknown Yeah.
Everett Uh, any other alibis? There's, there's a couple more watches you might want to talk about. I'm good. I already closed the tabs. Well, before we get into other things, let's, let's, let's finish our thoughts on the whiskey. I've not quite finished mine. So we're an hour through. I think the it's been breathing. It's been breathing. The, all of the ethanol heat has totally evaporated off. No heat. Just like deep, dark, fruity, good flavors. Still getting that kind of like Cabernet wine barrel. Like, do you know what this is? No, I don't.
Andrew Even with all of the evaporation off, you still get a really hot front.
Everett I still, I want this on crepes. What am I drinking? So I set Andrew up a little bit here. Um, I was in a liquor store on Friday and I saw Eagle Rare on the cab, on the shelf. Interesting. And I, I, you know, I never see Eagle Rare on the shelf. It's really hard to get. It's an allocated bourbon, even though we kind of know it's not super special. It's a 10 year bourbon from Buffalo trace, which is to say, um, it's gonna be good, but there, there seems to be, uh, uh, a mismatch in terms of demand for Eagle rare versus what you're getting. Um, and, but I've never, I I'm sure I've had Eagle rare before, but I've never thoughtfully had Eagle rare before. Um, and so I got at home, my comment to you, Andrew was, I was surprised at how tasty it was. It is low proof. And you, even it's 90, even at 90 and even in the first 10 minutes, you crack the bottle, pour it into your glass. It falls off almost immediately in terms of flavor or in terms of heat, not necessarily flavor. Like, in fact, I'm sitting here 45 seconds, maybe a minute after I had my last sip, it's still,
Andrew In my palate, but like oily it like sticks to your palate.
Everett Mm-hmm. There is no heat on this I don't even find it first, you know, you almost think you think It suggests to you that you're about to get a Kentucky hug and then you just don't you don't get it You don't ever feel it.
Andrew It's just a little it's like hey, I'm here.
Everett Yeah You don't swallow the the proof at all with that said I Really, really nice bourbon. There's a reason that this is hard to get. There's a reason this is hard to get because it is really, I would say, a complex palate. I know that that's funny for a 90 proof, pretty complex. Mouth feels great. Taste is about as good as any other flavor, about as good as any other bourbon I've ever had. Like I'm kind of blown away by how much I like this. I need this. And a hundred plus.
Andrew Yeah. So I, I told you this is the only bourbon that I had only liquor booze at all that I had taste aversion to cause the, the most, uh, obliterated I've ever been in my life was on a bottle of ego rare.
Everett Um, that's why I say I set Andrew up a little bit. You did.
Andrew And I, I'm, I'm glad to overcome the aversion.
Everett Uh, it's a tall bottle with the white etching. Yeah. Uh, I, I got like, We were just like sitting watching a movie and a buddy came over.
Andrew He's like, Hey, I got a bottle of whiskey. You guys want a whiskey Coke? I'm like, yeah, sure. Whatever.
Everett Had a whiskey and Coke. And he's like, you guys want another one?
Andrew Like, yeah, sure.
Everett I know. I know the end of the story. I'm gonna have another whiskey and Coke.
Andrew And then he brings out the empty bottle and I'm like, Oh no. We just drank a lot of booze. No. So the three of us over the course of like what you would typically drink a whiskey and Coke, like two whiskey and Cokes time period consumed a fifth of whiskey. And I was like, Buckle up, things are about to get weird. Because you know, in the course of like 45 minutes to drink a third of a fifth of whiskey, yeah, things got weird. And I've had it a couple times since, not a blind taste, and the couple times since, and this was, I don't know, 15 years ago. And the couple times since, like just couldn't shake it, shook it.
Everett Yeah, I did set you up a little bit more because I wanted to get your sort of like unadulterated thoughts about what you were actually tasting. This kind of surprised me. Here's what I will say. If you're a whiskey guy, This isn't probably going to do it. I don't want to sip this because I don't get, I want that ethanol push and I'm just not getting it here. This is, this is like branching out into, I don't like, this is closer to, I just want a little, like a quick little nip of whiskey. This might be amongst the most perfect beginner whiskeys. Could be, yeah. I mean, there's some stuff that's probably easier to get that would fill that role, but you're getting a lot of complexity. You're getting a lot of flavor. You're getting that sort of like, oh, I'm drinking something nice experience. If you can get this, I would not pay secondary prices for this.
Andrew No, don't.
Everett just don't fucking do it but at 60 bucks or whatever that at retail like That's a perfectly acceptable $60 bottle. I think so. Cause you're going to do a lot worse at 60. Or if you want something for like a summer cocktail, I think this could be really good. Although I think you could probably, there's a lot of alternatives if you're going to mix, but for a beginner or maybe a wifey bourbon or something like that, like I, you know, and I'm not assuming everybody's wives can't drink high proof bourbons. My wife can't. So yeah, I actually really like it. I was surprised. Um, it's probably going to be about 80% full on my shelf for a very long time. This is a perfect mint julep. Totally. Totally. Perfect. Cause the complexity of flavor comes through. That's a perfect mint julep bourbon. Yeah. Really good. Uh, other things, Andrew, what do you got? Uh, I have another thing. So, um,
Andrew Homemade pasta, man. Yeah. It's like I try to do homemade pasta once or twice a month for the kids because for two reasons. Number one, it is. Not even in the same ballpark.
Everett Dried pasta. Good. Fresh pasta is just so, so good. I have thoughts here, but keep going. It takes a little more time.
Andrew Yeah. Right. You got, instead of being able to just drop it in the water for 12 minutes, like get the, get the water to a boil, drop the pasta in for 10, 12 minutes, whatever you're cooking, it takes an, you know, an hour.
Everett 100 grams of flour, an egg, mix it together, let it rest, roll it out. I like to do Pepperdell pasta because it's nice and wide. It is a great vehicle for pasta sauce delivery. I'll confirm it, Andrew makes a really fucking good Pepperdell. So my other thing is the pasta roller kit for your KitchenAid.
Andrew Cause everyone has a kitchen aid. Everyone has a kitchen aid. You get married, you get a fucking kitchen aid. That's just, it's like sometimes you get to, everyone has one for under a hundred bucks. You can get a roller attachment and then two cutter attachments. One's for like a thin, again, closer to angel hair spaghetti than it is spaghetti with and then the others for like a linguine with. I don't like to use those because to get them to cut well, they have to be too thin. And I my main bitch with dried pastas is that they're always too thin. I want a little bit thicker, bitier pasta experience that is just like it's part of the meal as opposed to like just a starch that's on your plate. It takes no time at all. Right. Pretty quick.
Everett If you're cooking, you can, you can reasonably achieve fresh pasta in 35 minutes. It takes two minutes in the water and you've got to rest your pasta. So there's, there's a little bit more planning that's involved.
Andrew I like to rest.
Everett You've got to rest your dough. Yeah. I like to rest for about an hour, but you've got to rest your dough and you've got to rest your pasta. Yeah. Yeah. But it can be done totally in under an hour, especially if you make the dough the night before. Yep. Which is the way to do it.
Andrew I usually don't. I usually do it the morning of like, that's the first thing. If I'm making fresh pasta, I'm like, Oh, I'm going to make pasta right now.
Everett Uh, but make the dough, put it in saran wrap, sticking in the fridge. The, the ratio that I've like kind of come to and, 100 grams of flour per egg. A little sprinkle of salt. I sometimes like to put some herbs in there. I've never tried laminating pasta before, but I think I might do that on my next one. Actually pressing herbs, whole herbs into it, fresh herbs, as you roll it out.
Andrew But I'm just saying, just try it. You have a KitchenAid, spend 100 bucks. And if you don't have a KitchenAid, spend the 30 bucks and get a hand roller. Just make the fresh pasta.
Everett I love fresh pasta, Andrew. It doesn't reheat well at all. There is no reheating capability. Your Pepperdell, one of the best pastas I've ever had in my life, and I say that without any reservation. Andrew sent me home with Pepperdell and a sundae sauce recently. That whiskey pour you brought me over, so good. Fucked my world. I think it's like 130 proof. I was like, I finished it and I was like, Oh, I'm hammered. I don't remember what it was that I brought you. It was the, I think it was the Jack Daniels. Oh yeah. Single barrel, single barrel. I was like, Oh, that's really good. But Oh no. Single barrel, barrel proof Jack Daniels, I think came in at 130 something. Yeah. Yeah. Fucked me up because I like I just wasn't ready for it. Yeah, and that's not like a oh, yeah, I'll have this quick Single pour now you gotta you gotta work through that. But man, anyway, so so Lasagna most pastas, I think Like when we talk about pasta, pasta is a huge world. I'm gonna suggest one major caveat to this. And most people don't have the capabilities to make spaghetti at home. Because to make a spaghetti noodle, it's actually like extruded and not cut. And so- I'm gonna get one of those presses. But here's what I will say. Spaghetti is better dried. homemade fresh spaghetti does not does not have the right texture dried spaghetti is the answer so if you're making if you're making a spaghetti dish if you're making like spaghetti puttanesca or uh like a pantry spaghetti uh just get the dried stuff because because you cannot get the right level of al dente in a fresh pasta with spaghetti you
Andrew You can. It just takes more time. You have to let it dry for hours.
Everett Almost impossible. Just get the, just get a really good dried spaghetti, boil it until it's almost, but not quite ready. And then finish that in the sauce. That's always going to be, I think personally, this is a personal preference, but always going to be better than a homemade spaghetti. And, and so pasta, we're talking about pasta, the noodles. Yes, but for me, spaghetti is the exception. I've never had a fresh spaghetti that was better than a dried spaghetti because the texture's wrong. So that's just my, that's my big caveat to the homemade pasta, to the homemade pasta routine. And I almost feel the same way about ramen, although I've had some really good fresh ramen noodles. I think a dried ramen noodle is gonna usually give you a better texture.
Andrew I mean, in the Momofuku book, he has the recipe for how to make fresh ramen.
Everett And I've made fresh ramen and it's delicious. In the intro to the recipe, he says, this isn't worth it. That's right. Just buy the noodles. Buy a good ramen noodle. We're not talking about Maruchan. Buy a good ramen noodle and you're going to have better results, I think. The guy making the noodles for his restaurant says don't bother. Andrew, I was in trial the other day and so I have a new modern MacBook that only has USB ports. And for that reason, I've bought a handful of USB. It only has USB-C ports. Did I say that?
Andrew You said only USB, but I think because we're all familiar with Apple, USB-C.
Everett And so I have bought USB-C thumb drives, which are terrific, by the way. It's just a USB-C thumb drive is the coolest thing. And so when I take exhibits to trial, I take them on a USB-C thumb drive, and I even have a handful of USB-C to USB-A adapters that I keep in like a little baggie. So if someone's like, I can't use this, I just give them their like, $0.79, I just give them one. And you look like a huge baller, you're like, here, have this, you're prepared next time. Here you go. But I got a USB-A thumb drive this last time I was in trial and I was like, fuck, I don't have the ability to make this work right now. And so I went out and bought a solution. I have, here's the deal. This is such a stupid thing because everybody's got this capability. I've got, I've had a number of like mini docs over the years. I've had a number of, I've got a number of ways to interface with a MacBook because historically MacBooks, or at least not, at least in recent history, MacBooks have gotten rid of IO in a way that's been annoying. Yes. And so I've spent some time over the years trying to bridge that gap. I recently bought a thing and my law partner said, hey, just get one of these. It's 25 bucks. Just get one. It's tiny. You'll always have in your bag and you'll always be able to do everything you need with your USB-C laptop from, in my case, MacBook Pro. It expands beyond that. So I bought a device, this is called the Anker 332 USB-C Hub 5-in-1. These are words we hear all the time. What this does is it gives you the ability to display on a 4K HDMI. It's got two USB-A ports, two USB-C ports, each at five gigabytes transfer speed. It's got an, it says a hundred watt. Power delivery usb-c.
Andrew I think it actually works out to be 85 watts I think it has to govern it down. There's something. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, it says 100 watts max, but I think it's actually 85 watts It's 85 watts of pass-through it eats like the transference eats 15 watts
Everett That's right. And one more thing to note, if you wanted something for gaming, this wouldn't be it. I think it's got a 30 frames per second at 4K or 60 at 1080. That is not what I'm getting this for. This is not a... Display port and if you want that get something different That's a lot more than 25 bucks probably at minimum four times that however It is about the size of a modern pack of gum like an orbits pack a gum a little touch longer touch skinnier Orbits is the big flat things. This is like closer to like a vape pen. That's right. It's about the size of a vape pen It does have a fixed cable which causes some concern in my mind but point is it's small enough I can stow this thing in my briefcase and never think about it. So now I have a fully 5-in-1 display and USB-C talk that's super fast. 5 gigabytes per second isn't super fast But it's fast enough. If you're not playing movies, it's pretty fucking fast. If you're trying to transfer like all of your documents onto a, like a SSD or something, maybe not the toy, but for just about anything else, I, this thing is terrific and it's anchor, right?
Andrew Anchor does like some of, if not maybe the, Like they're on the cutting edge of this mobile technology boom. And trying to integrate technologies, right? Apple's constantly changing with that European ruling that everyone had to consolidate down to one single charging port. That's huge. That had these global impacts of Enormous corporations and then so you have your your modern technology input and all of your antiquated now obsolete technologies that people are still using because they're not gonna upgrade just to just because Apple was forced to and then everybody else followed suit. You don't have to as an individual The only thing you can't do is play fucking Nintendo 64 through this.
Everett Oh And actually, you maybe could. Long story short, there's probably products that are just as good out there. There may be products for a little bit less money that are fine, and probably products for a lot more money that are maybe somewhat better. But for a thing that I'm gonna stow in my briefcase, this does a couple things for me. One, it's a brand that I really, really, really trust. Two, it is clearly well-made. I have zero concerns about the quality of this thing because I know the brand and it feels good. Everything's put together well. The cable's nice. The connections are all good. It's solid, really, really well-made. And it's been perfect. It's been perfect, 25 bucks and I just, I feel like I should have three of these in every bag I own because that is such a pain in the ass when you get somewhere and you're like, I need to do this thing and I don't have the right cable. This does everything. Yeah, it does it all. You want to display onto a TV? You can. You want to plug in whatever thing into your computer that now only has USB-C ports? You can. Pass through charging at 85 watts. This thing is freaking terrific. I love it. I love it. 25 bucks.
Andrew Fuckin' anchor, man.
Everett Such a stu- I'm sorry. I know this isn't novel or super great. It's rather, this is one of those stupid things that I picked up and I was like, this is the one. Just buy this one.
Unknown Yeah.
Everett And that's why I'm telling you about it. Andrew, anything else you want to add? I'm all out of things. Look, you guys, I'm just going to say it once.
