Speaker
Andrew Hello, fellow watch lovers, nerds, enthusiasts, or however you identify. You're listening to 40 and 20, the Watch Clicker podcast with your hosts, Andrew and my good friend Everett. Here, we talk about watches, food, drinks, life, and other things we like. Everett, how are you?
Everett Alive, doing all right. That's all we can ask for, I guess.
Unknown Yeah.
Everett Yeah, that's right. My grass is fully in, Andrew. It's not fully in. It's looking good. But it's like 80%. It's looking good. I did my second mow tonight and I put down some backup seed. I pre-germinated some additional seed for today. And so I gave it a mow, still mowing it pretty high, gave it a mow, put down the secondary seed in the thinner spots.
Andrew I think the drill seeding would probably mitigate, like would, deal with the need for overseeding right now?
Everett You know, I, there are places where it's still thin, notwithstanding the drill seeding. So, um, I, it doesn't hurt to put down a little bit more pre-germinated seed. Never hurts. So, and the seed was sprouting, so I mixed that up with some Milorganine and put that down today. So, uh, and realistically, that's it. We're at the end of our season and we've got another probably month where things will grow. So hopefully that comes in and gets established right before everything stops.
Andrew I'm starting to sweat cause I'm at like seven days exactly from my top dressing and seating. And I'm, I'm not getting the, uh, not getting what I was hoping for. I think you're going to be okay. I think I'm going to get there. I'm a little nervous.
Everett Ooh, no keto. 10 days is when you should really start seeing stuff, so you're okay.
Andrew Yeah, that's my hope. There's a couple sprouting up. I'm really fighting the kids, like quit playing on the front, like there are stones to walk on. And the dogs, which are the cause of the baldness in the back, not the lumpiness, the top dressing was really in the back was to correct the lumpiness. Same with the front, it was just like so lumpy that it was like, it was hard to mow comfortably. So, uh, we'll see. And if it fails this winter, it fails this winter and we'll try again in the spring.
Unknown Yeah, that's right.
Everett And then do it again next fall because the seed you put down in the spring didn't, didn't last the summer. Yeah, we'll see. We'll see. Uh, but no other than that, doing really well, Andrew, I am, um, I'm excited to talk about watches tonight because, in fact, that is what we're here to do, believe it or not.
Andrew At Knot Lawns, though, we could maybe have a reasonable 30-minute monthly lawn podcast. Maybe we should consider that under the Umbrella Corp that we don't have yet, but we can consider it.
Everett Yeah, I actually consider myself to be a one-man podcast production, Umbrella Corp.
Unknown Hmm.
Andrew Despite your numerous co-hosts.
Everett That's right. Okay. I'm the one who does all the production work. I have the passwords.
Andrew I have some passwords. They're saved. I could get, I could change them. They're saved. Can you get into your Instagram?
Everett And we're going to talk about watches. Watches we will talk about. There's some fun stuff. I do think, The last couple of releases release weeks have been maybe slightly more energetic. There is some cool stuff this week, but it didn't feel like, oh, my gosh, oh, my gosh, oh, my gosh.
Andrew Oh, you know, I felt differently. I felt like this week was kind of like sleepers. Yeah, I like kind of like low key, like I think that's fair. What up, girl? kind of drops, you know, like nothing, nothing big and huge, but some, some stuff that's like, Ooh, Ooh, uh, like a little bit of a slow burn. And I'm going to start with one that I hate. Do it. And it's a, it's a thing that I hate. I like, I like, hate talking about watches. So the first thing I want to talk about is the Panerai honoring of the United States Navy Seals with its new desert camouflage collection. And when I saw this, I was immediately annoyed. And and I so I looked at him and I read about him and I'm like, what's what's bugging me about this? What is bug? Are you going to tell us? Making something camouflage is not a homage or honor to the military. Holy shit. That came out of nowhere. Uh, I'm so annoyed with Panerai that I sneezed. Uh, that's not it, right? Just adding, like making some of the DLC or putting a camouflage strap on something is not a, an homage to the military. These are just Panerai watches. These are just four varieties of Panerai coming in at 11 grand, like, or 10 grand, like every other Panerai. It's the same shit with just a different strap, but, ooh, it's our ode to Navy Seals. No, it's not. You're just, like, trying to somehow coattail ride this thing that people get excited about and want to be associated with while buying your watch. It kind of bugs me and and and and. And. They're ugly. The straps are not good, right? Digital camouflage is not good. I have yet to see a good execution of digital camouflage across any platform. Up to and including wearing it. These like these bummed me out. It got me grumpy. I don't think adding faux Tina or DLC or digital camouflage strap is an ode to. Any. Military fighting force. And I don't like this release. At me, Panerai, I dare you.
Everett You have strong feelings about this.
Andrew It's just annoying, right? At least to me, it's like, ooh, this is the ode to the Navy SEALs. And then you get this weird like bro down dude who's like, man, I could have been a Navy SEAL and I have 10 grand.
Everett I need a Panerai. I think they're more than that. I don't. They're 10-4. OK, well, the one is 34, but yeah, you're right. They've got 13-7, 19-7 and 10.
Unknown for the right.
Everett Come on.
Andrew Regular. Oh, oh, we put the trident on it. Shut up, Panerai.
Everett Shut up. Yeah, I don't hate him as much as you do. I typically don't like cross branded stuff like this, and that's how I feel about this, but I don't hate it quite as much as you do. This one got me annoyed. Yeah, I actually kind of like the Marpat strap.
Andrew Uh, but I'll kick you in your testicles later. I do kind of like it. I can kick into testicles. That's good. Cause it's happening. Ball busting in the studio tonight. Well, how about that? Now let's talk about the things that we don't hate.
Everett Yeah, I've got something I don't hate. In fact, I've got something that I really, that I really like. This is a Hodinkee collaboration. Hodinkee last year, or excuse me, earlier this year, announced they're getting out of the retail game because it was dragging them down, getting back to writing. I say good for you, Hodinkee. But with that announcement, they said, hey, we're still going to do collaborations because you should. They're cool. And I also think because we do need to have a supplemental source of income It helps. That's my guess. Hodinkee released this last week a Zenith collaboration, and I think it's pretty terrific. So I think that Zenith was one of Hodinkee's very first collab companies. I think maybe they did an MB&F collaboration, but then they did a Zenith collab, and so they've kind of got a long history with the company. They released this week a limited edition to a limited edition, which is based on a 1970 prototype, an El Primero prototype, which was a triple calendar moon phase. So I think Last year, two years ago, Zenith released sort of a limited edition to this prototype. And I don't think that there was very many of them, maybe there wasn't very many because it was kind of experimental. They were like, we don't know a, if this module is going to work, this triple calendar module is going to work. And I guess it did.
Andrew So well enough at least. That's right.
Everett So what this is, is a triple calendar on top of a Zenith A386 El Primero movement. It's a stainless steel case, 38 wide, 14 thick, which is pretty stinking good considering everything they do. Yeah. With a moon phase. With a moon phase. Because why not? Yeah, right. I guess that's part of the triple calendar, maybe? I don't know.
Andrew No, the triple calendar is day, month. That's right.
Everett Date. And the moon phase in the 60 minute counter at six o'clock. So it's beautiful. They've got this sort of monochromatic case, this black, silver, gray case, maybe some white details. It's got a a pulsometer.
Andrew Dial. The case is steel. Did I say steel? You said case. Yes, dial is what I mean to say. This would be cooler in DLC, but.
Everett And gosh, man, this is really cool. So I don't know, I was trying to figure out how many they're making of these. 200. Okay, there you go. So you're getting 200 of these. I think the first 75 are only going to be available through the Hodinkee shop, $13,500, which, you know, I think that's kind of where you would expect this watch to land. Really, really, really beautiful. This is a really good watch, Andrew. This is, I mean, it's an expensive watch, but it's a Zenith. This is really stinking good.
Andrew So when you, when you look top down on this watch, it just looks like, A. Three sub dial El Primero.
Unknown Mm hmm.
Andrew You gotta get close to see all the things. So not only is this a. Day of the week. Month of the year date. Triple calendar with a moon phase. It's meteorite sub dials. This is like. Maybe one of the most go fuck yourself watches that has ever gone and fucked itself. Right. It's so understated and simple with all like all the shit loaded up in it. Right. I don't know how you, I don't know what else you could put in this watch. Yeah. Yeah. And it's, And it looks that way, too. Nothing about this watch is big. Yeah, very subdued. Like, super understated. Even the meteorite looks like it could be pad printed. That's right. Super, super subdued. It's just simple, little bit of texture, little bit of color. This is dope. And only $200. So not only is it like as go fuck yourself as gone and fucked yourself, there's only $200 of them. So every time you wear it, you can know that Like maybe 99 other people are wearing that watch today.
Everett Yeah. I think it's great. That's a winner. I think it's great. It's, it's spendy, right? This is a, not a cheap watch. Uh, but it's not supposed to be.
Andrew It's, you said, what's the price on it? $13,500. So just a touch more than the bullshit Navy seal homage from Panerai.
Everett Well, cheaper than some of them. Cause yeah, there was two of them that were 13. Well, two of them that were one that was 13, seven, one that was 19, one that was 34.
Andrew So, so better than that. And there's only 200 of them being made and it's an El Primero. I don't know. Every time I look at El Primero, I'm like, man, this, Oh, it's starting to creep. It's it's way into the, Oh, my wife's home. My dog's barking. I don't know if you can hear the background. So since we're talking about co-labs, I want to briefly talk about the Zodiac and Craft & Tailored to a manually wound pre-Sea Wolf. And this is good. Zodiac, I think, has kind of like relegated itself to a, what, like two, three real skews with a hundred different colorways. And this is different. This isn't a new colorway release only from Zodiac. So it's got a slightly different case. It's the, um, tailored super seawolf reference six, nine, one 36 millimeter case, 12 thick white or black dials, 200 meters of water resistance, a, three link. Here's the kind of bar is it's a riveted bracelet. Um, but it, it grabs all that vintage that Zodiac really is and kind of just changes it a little bit. We have guilted white dial, non guilted black dial, which is kind of a bummer cause I think this would be terrific in white without the guilt, but just a really good vintage, like from the catalog release from Zodiac paired up with, and I didn't, I had kind of a weird week. So I didn't do a whole lot of reading into craft and tailored to see kind of their influence into this collaboration. But when I saw this, I was like, Oh, that's Zodiac, but it's a little different. And I appreciate that because so much of Zodiac is like new release teal. New release, teal with orange. New release, orange and teal. Like that's kind of where Zodiac is in just this color palette playground. So to see them doing a, even if it's collaboration, truly new release or different, maybe not new is the right word, but a different release, I thought super cool. And I love this watch. This is like every bit of 1960s skin diver that just gets you, gets you right where you want it to be.
Everett Hmm. Yeah. So on Craft and Tailored, Craft and Tailored is a vintage watch dealer. So they do Rolex and Patek and like cool, mostly like hard to get high end shit. I think Cameron Barr is the name of the owner. I've listened to a couple of interviews with him. He's a, he's a watch guy, man. He's like a legit watch guy. So, and I think you can see, You can see the influence on this one. I like the... Well, and perhaps even just in terms of what this is, right? So this is ostensibly the very first dive watch, right? So Rolex and Blancpain are always fighting, but The Seawolf, uh, the Seawolf was preceded by the Zodiac Reference 6-9-1 Diver.
Andrew And it's still held by somebody else, which is why we have the Super Seawolf from Zodiac, right? There's like a, there's a copywriting issue. Oh, I don't know about that. I have like a vague recollection that they had to adjust from the Seawolf to the Super Seawolf because of some copywriting or trademarking or something. some, some silly shit, right? Like using NATO as a, as a nylon pass through.
Everett So this is that, this is a relatively faithful recreation of that original 691 diver, 36 millimeters. You know, this is, I think the one kind of oddity here. So the 691 was an automatic. This is a hand wound. It's a hand wound, Well, it's a new caliber, which is neat. It's a new fossil caliber, which is neat. But I think it's based on the STP-111, which is at a 28-24 clone. But it's a brand new hand-wound movement from fossil, and that's fun. But hand-wound movement, screw down crown, not It's Yeah. So I think, so what's the deal? You can get one of them, the white dial just on Craft & Tailored and the black dial just on the Zodiac website.
Andrew Something like that.
Everett Yeah. It's kind of fun, but also kind of annoying.
Andrew The black is superb. And it's a 36 millimeter dive watch, man. Great beveling on that, or on the bezel. Great edges on the case. Is that your watch?
Everett What? Was that your watch? Is it my turn?
Andrew Yeah, it's your turn. Because we're talking about collabs. So we did them back to back.
Everett Yes. Do I want to do that one? I'll do that one. Eska. Oh, interesting. Eska. So Eska is a company that was a rev, it's a revival company from like this kind of like obscure, this kind of obscure vintage company. So it's a vintage revival company that came out with a, they came out with a, like a, why am I blanking on words, Andrew?
Andrew You know, because it's a Tuesday.
Everett They came out with this watch called the Amphibian 250 last year and they put it on Kickstarter. It had an NH movement and it was like an NH38 and it was like $1,200. And so it's this beautiful, rare, a recreation of this beautiful, rare Bakelite sort of Blancpainish watch from the 60s. And people were really into it. I think it was too much money and too shitty of a movement. So you can use NH movements, I think, but NH movements I think should be relegated to watches that say Seiko on the dial or to watches that are less than 500 bucks. It should be one of those two things. This is neither of those things. bad movement, and I think it was a little too expensive for what it was, but I think that they met and exceeded their Kickstarter goals very, very quickly. So what, what do I get to say about it? Um, this one has a, this one has a solida SW 200 and it's like a thousand bucks. So cheaper and it has the right movement. Um, It's white. It's got old radium loom. It is a two 50 automatic. It's got the same sandwich dial. It's got great fonts. Uh, yeah, that's what this is. The shark edition. And it would be easy to say, Oh, it's a new color way of the shark edition, but it's not, it's a better movement and it's less money. And it's also a new color way. Old radium loom, whatever. Um,
Andrew What do you think of this thing? How do you feel about the fonts?
Everett I okay. I like the dial font. I like the logo font. I like the amphibian and the 250 automatic font. I like the bezel font. I could do without the Arabic numeral font. Take it or leave it. And I'm more inclined to leave it. I could do without the quotations around the 250.
Andrew I love it. I think it's awesome. I think it's a weird, like everything about this watch is just kind of like weird and fun. And I think I kind of dig that, which is why the, the quotations are there around the two 50. Uh, I love it. Love it. Love it. Love it. Love it. But I'm, I'm pretty down with everything this watch is doing. Uh, I think we maybe don't talk about French watchmaking very often. Uh, and it's certainly not because they're not doing stuff. And I think this is a good example of why we should, why, like, this is French watchmaking.
Everett Yeah. Yeah, I think that's right. It's French watchmaking and it's stunning. The 250 in quotes was on the original, by the way.
Andrew I believe it was on the original. I just, I don't think it needs to remain. Those are gorgeous, by the way. They are. Even with their clumpy loom.
Everett Big, fat bezel, porthole dial. I'm into it. Those are gorgeous watches.
Andrew I mean, it's true to form, right? This is a true to the original. A little bit bigger. Design reissue. Esca. I'm with it. What's next, Andrew? Next up for me is our last collaboration, I think. What is probably going to be our last collaboration watch for the night? It might be. Laurier and Lornenwound. got together to make the Astra Star Gazer. And this is one of, if not my absolute favorite collaboration watch, because this is so good, right? We have this Astra case. We've got, I could, I'd like a bracelet on it, but it's a limited special collaboration edition. This Great. Kind of weird, space-agey, Star Trek-y dial. It kind of reminds me of the... Oh, it's a Racketta watch. You know which one I'm talking about. I will admit, I don't know what you're talking about. There's a Racketta watch that uses hands like this that are almost like orbiting planetary things. Oh, gosh, I wish I could come up with the name of it. When you look at it without the loom, you've got these concentric circles of green with a weird kind of like globey center sandwich in the middle, big circular open hands. And it just it looks like the Jetsons. But when you look at it loomed up, it's like looking at a astronomy chart. The hands aren't visible. It's just these loom pips floating on this dark hole in the middle of your dial. And this thing is just stunning. During daylight, this is a not for me watch. It looks super illegible. It's like very novelty. But in loom, this thing is cool. Everything's floating and just there in the middle of this dark void. They're using C3 and C9 to do contrasting loom colors on it. 36 millimeter case, 44 lug to lug, 11 thick, nine, nine, without that crystal, so it's a real thin movement. It's the Nino S5 Miota, 100 meters of water resistance and 500 bucks. For 200 of them, they're gonna expect a December delivery, December of this year delivery for them. These are really, really stunning. And I think it's a cool collaboration with Laurier to do something in this vintage style that's super postmodern and kind of like fits with that 60s, 70s vibe that they have of like, Oh, we're going to do what looks like 2020. And then we get the Jetsons. Right. And this kind of feels like 1970 trying to project itself into 2020.
Everett Yeah. No, it's definitely got that vibe. Um, I don't, I don't hate this watch at all. I really like it. I also don't really like it, which is to say I probably wouldn't wear it. I love the Astra case. I, the styles just got too much going on for me, but it's gorgeous. I agree with you on that. And I think if you like it, you'd be super happy with this. Um, I, I like it. They, they did something here when I, when I pulled this watch up and started looking for it, I kept looking for what the stupid connection was going to be. Like, there's got to be some sort of stupid, like, this is made for circumnavigating.
Andrew There's no stupid story.
Everett If you line the thing up with the thing and then it'll take you to this place in the Mariana Trench where you can, you know, there's nothing. They're just like, we like the way it looks. I love that. It's just a weird watch. that was made because they liked the way it looks?
Andrew Copernicus, the Raketa Copernicus.
Everett I love it. I'm going to Google Raketa. Oh, that's perfect. Oh yeah. Yeah, that's great. I think there's also a Wittenauer watch that uses like a round, a round minutes hand too. So that's cool.
Andrew Yeah, this one uses, so the Copernicus uses a round minutes hand and a solid disc. hour hand. So once an hour, they create an eclipse. Whitten hour round. One other person on, on the eBay. This one's for a hundred bucks. One other person has it in their cart. I wonder how high I could bid him. Start a bidding war.
Everett Do you really want a Rochetta?
Andrew I like this watch. I've, I've looked at it numerous times, which is why I could so readily pull the, uh. It's an attractive watch. So readily pull the reference, but not the name of it.
Everett I just Googled Wittenauer round secondhand and nothing. Um, so moving along. Yeah.
Andrew We'll skip it. Skip it. That's what my, uh, so because we use streaming services to watch television, my four year old, when we change from one episode to the next and you get the option to skip the intro. Skip. Skip it. That's what he says. Can you just give it?
Everett Such a dick. Let me look at your list because I've got a couple of things to talk about.
Andrew I'm sure we had some overlap and there's things to talk about.
Everett We don't have that much overlap. There's only one that's overlap. We've got some time. You've got a bunch left. I'm going to talk.
Andrew I assumed a lot of the bunch was overlap.
Everett I'm going to talk about the Retrograph Lument. Yeah, you are. John Ferrer at Brew released a fully loomed Retrograph and It's about time. It's terrific. It's 375 bucks. It's a retro graph, which is a 38 millimeter, uh, square ish case. It's a rectangular cause it's 38 by 41 and a half. It's 10 four thick. It is a retro graph. It's made out of stainless steel, not titanium, which is a thing now. It's got a Mecca quartz chronograph. It's 50 meters of water resistance and it's a full loom dial. It's a cool full loom dial. And it's 375 bucks. And it's super minty and it's fucking awesome.
Andrew Yeah. You would, you should like when you wear this watch, you should drink Mojitos in the dark.
Everett Like that's, I would just use Aqua Fresh in the dark. Um, this we're in different places, I guess, in our lives. It's great. That's all I need to say about it, right? It's a retrograph that you should drink Mojitos with. A retrograph is, If you're new, first, I want to say welcome. Hello. What the fuck are you doing with your life that you've tuned into episode three hundred and four billion whatever of this show? Sorry for all the f-bombs. Sorry we cuss. Sorry that we don't explain what we're talking about way too often because we assume you know. And I'm sorry that you've never heard of the Retrograph before. This is a watch by a coffee company, coffee themed company out of New York, who's owned by this really great guy with great hair. and gives the best hugs. And he really does. He makes a watch called the retro graph, which is unsurprisingly a retro inspired chronograph. Go figure. And he's made in really cool colors. And now he's made it in a relatively stoic for john for a fully loomed dial. Yeah, it's white. That's what you need to do. So you're going to go to the show notes. We've got this is a podcast And so on the podcast, there's this thing called show notes. Those are available on our website, but also in your podcast player, there's going to be a link that's going to say RetroGraph Lumen. Click that and then go to the bottom of that page and click buy.
Andrew I'm not going to link this one. This will be the one thing that lacks a link.
Everett Sorry, new user. We are not customer focused here. No, we're not. Moving on. Buy the RetroGraph Lumen. It's sick.
Andrew Yeah, it's really good. I love full moon dials.
Everett John's not even paying me to say this. John hasn't called me or texted me or FaceTimed me in probably like a year and a half. So he's not paying me to say that.
Andrew We'll have to get John on and then he can pay for this just by hanging out with us and drinking beer.
Everett I'm still saying it.
Andrew Okay. What do I wanna talk about next? You know what I wanna talk about?
Everett Andrew, can I say something? I think you should. I... You're wearing your Monte Atlas tonight. I am. And for some reason, I couldn't tell what it was. I was looking at it, and I was like, what is this awesome watch Andrew's wearing? From the side, you know, it's super thin, even for a GMT. The profile is just sexy. And it just, the bracelet looked good, and I was like, what is that? I have the Triumph, which is very, very similar.
Andrew It's the slimmer version.
Everett But I was just looking, I was like,
Andrew what and then I've realized it took this is probably about a 15 second thing that just happened uh that is such an attractive watch it yeah so my nine-year-old mark is aware of watches he wears an f91 all the time everywhere he wears it on a cheapest nato strap so it is a nato because they have the license uh and and I don't I don't even remember when I gave it to him, but he was like, I want a watch. And I was like, here, you can wear this. And then he just hasn't taken it off. And he saw a kid at like his afterschool care the other day. He's like, man, this kid is rich. He has a watch with gold on it. And, but he's like super, he, every day he has seven to 10 questions about watches that I answer. that he doesn't, you know, accept the information. He just has like a rapid fire seven to 10 questions that he slams me with and I answer them and he doesn't give a shit. Um, but today he was like, what's your favorite, like what's your nicest watch? And I was like, I think that's a relative question. My most expensive watch is a cardio Santos, which is also probably arguably my best finished, but like, Nice for what? Like, my nicest watch for, like, beating the shit out of it is my G-Shock. My nicest watch for the money I paid is the commuter. Like, it's relative, right? It's not a dollar amount. Like, what do you mean by nicest? He goes, what's your favorite watch? And I'm wearing my Atlas today. I was like, you know, I think I think the Atlas. I think this is my favorite watch that I have. It fits so well. It wears so nice. It's so attractive. It's so simple. It goes, it's a go anywhere, do anything. If you have 2,500 bucks to spend on one watch, I really think, you know, the Triumph, I think is a, is a acceptable replacement for this. But sub $3,000, it's triumph for Atlas for me in the way of what is the one watch that can just do it all.
Everett I've just destroyed your date and your GMT. You fucking didn't. Did you really? Yeah. I was, I was checking to see if it was a caller or a, uh, yeah. So this is. You asshole. This is a really incredible watch, Andrew. And it's very, very similar to the Manta. Like you said, the Manta's a little slimmer. Triumph, they're both Manta. What did I say? Yeah, Manta. You said Manta. Yeah, the Triumph is a little slimmer. You're such a fucking dick.
Andrew Fuck, it's the six. You put me forward five days.
Everett I don't think Manta gets quite enough credit. They don't.
Andrew Which is hard. And people give a shit for being Manta fanboys.
Everett It's almost hard to imagine, as popular as Manta is, that they don't get enough credit. But at the under $3,000 price range, there's nobody doing what Manta does. There's nobody. I mean, Formex does some really cool things. But Formex is out there with all of their releases, right? And not in a bad way, in a good way. Monta's making these just absolutely luxurious, gorgeous, if not boring watches.
Andrew They are boring. But you know what? The Explorer is boring. The Seamaster is boring. The Speedmaster is boring.
Everett They are doing... I mean, their closest competition right now is Tudor, I would say, and Longines. Those are the two companies that are the closest. Both of them are more money.
Andrew Lunging can go North and South.
Everett And I don't think, I don't think that either one of them are as good. Tudor is beating Manta in terms of, in two places. One, movements. No doubt about it. Tudor movements are better than Manta's movements. You just can't, nobody's going to make that argument on this show.
Unknown You're, you're, yeah.
Everett And of course, cachet, right?
Andrew Tutor's got 50 SKUs. And an unlimited supply chain.
Everett That's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about like reputational.
Andrew Yeah, their heritage is there.
Everett Heritage, cachet. So at every other possible metric, I'm arguing that Monta's beating them. They've got better dials. They've got better hands. Almost universally. They've got better markers. They've got equivalent casework, probably, but... Certainly. Montas are better put together. They're a thinner, more carefully constructed watch than a Tudor.
Andrew They feel closer to Rolex than to Tudor.
Everett Look, I'm gonna say something crazy. I think that Monta, in some ways, is Better than Rolex. Cause you can buy them.
Andrew Cause you can get them right now at retail today. You can go to the Manta website. You can buy any one of their five available like models.
Everett Andrew, you hear me out and you at home hear me out. Cause the thing I just said is crazy and stupid and I don't really mean it, but why is it that an Explorer is 11 millimeters? or 10 and a half or whatever, why isn't an Explorer under 10 millimeters?
Andrew Because they don't have to make it under 10.
Everett Why is it that Manta is the only one that can make that watch under 10 millimeters? What the fuck is going on here? And don't tell me that that's not a meaningful dimensional difference, because people will say, oh, no, it's a meaningful dimensional difference. Manta is really special. It's crazy, man. It's crazy. We're not even talking about Manta today.
Andrew That wasn't on the list.
Everett But there we are. Sorry about the diversion.
Andrew Is it my turn or is it your turn? It's my turn. I want to talk about a Hamilton release. The Khaki Aviation Pilot is now available in 39. It used to be just available in the 42 and the 36. Yeah.
Everett So always available for a tooth. Then they were, then they released in 36, right?
Andrew Which everyone's like, ah, okay, shit. 42 was just a touch too big. And then you went like, you really swung that pendulum. Uh, and now we have the 39. So now in the way of tutor, we have all of the case sizes that we want. It's in, it's the khaki aviation pilot, right? It's there.
Everett It's no date though. It's a no date 36.
Andrew I really like this. I think I maybe prefer this to the Murph. Uh, and in a 39 I, or, or even the, the khaki automatic, right? Like there were the field. Uh, I think this is my shit.
Everett These are, let's get the specs up. It's bananas. B-A-N-A-N-A-S.
Andrew Bananas. 39 millimeter case, 11.6 thick, a hundred meters of water resistance. It's their H-10. It's a 28-24 movement.
Everett It's a Powermatic 80 is what it is.
Andrew Yeah. So Swiss, no, this doesn't make sense. Oh, it does. Yeah. I was, I was reversing my Swiss francs to euros. It's 1200 bucks on a bracelet.
Everett 1200 bucks. Now look, I am the owner of Akaki Aviation. You are. The full size. It's a big bitch. But it's a Day-Date. It's a lovely Day-Date. And it's, in fact, the one reason that I don't get rid of that watch is because it's a Day-Date. I'll pick it up some days and I'm like, eh, why do I own this thing? I didn't pay that much. I got it for a song. I think I got it for like 650 bucks. The bracelet to me leaves a little something to be desired. A little bit, yeah. Hamilton is, I mean, Hamilton is so close. And for what they're offering, for the price that they're offering it for, great watch. But this not being a Day-Date to me is like a non-starter. Really? It is. Hey, look, do you take this?
Andrew A Day-Date at 39 or 36 is too much. Hold on, hold on. No, the Day-Date at 42, I totally get. At 39 and 36, I think I'm not with.
Everett Yeah, maybe, maybe. But hear me out. I'm going to go, I'm just going to scroll up. I'm going to scroll up just a little bit. Do you take this over the Hanhart Preventer HD 12 that we talked about a couple of weeks ago? Hmm. Which is obviously not the same watch.
Andrew I don't take it over that.
Everett I like the Hanhart Preventer. Me either. I don't. And we're not talking about a one-to-one watch, right? This is more of a traditional pilot.
Andrew I think I like the Preventer more because I think it's cooler.
Everett Me too. Me too. Uh, me too. About the same price. That's 39 millimeters. That is, is it 200 meters of water resistance? It's 200, yeah.
Andrew Like, I... But that's kind of a Hamilton thing, is Hamilton is always wanting in water resistance.
Everett Yeah. Yeah, I take and that thing's got all the PVD, that invisible PVD coding, like, yeah, I'm going, I'm going HD 12.
Andrew I think I think I am too. And I wouldn't have thought about it without you offering that contest.
Everett And if I'm going to spend just a little bit more, if I'm going to spend just a touch more, Andrew, I'm going to triumph.
Andrew We're back to it. Right? This episode not brought to you by Manta, just to be super clear about it.
Everett Also not paying us. Justin also hasn't called me in way too long.
Andrew Okay. We called them last, just to be clear.
Everett So like I said, when, when Hamilton released the 38 millimeter Murph, I said, this is cool. I like this preventer more and, and sorry, I've read some stuff on Reddit about Hanhart aping the Murph with their release. Go look at vintage Hanhart. The Murph is a Hanhart homage. I don't care what you say.
Andrew None of them are homages. They come from a time of mil-spec bidding. They come from the dirty dozen times.
Everett These are German watches, but Hanhart was the company that was doing this text.
Andrew This is Flieger watches. Everyone was doing the same shit. There was no like, oh, this brand's doing the thing. It was the same dial with a different logo. There's no aping of watches of this era. I disagree with you here.
Everett Unless you're new. You need to go look at it, Andrew. The Murph is a handhard homage. You need to go back and look at historical watches. I will. OK.
Andrew I. It's crazy. I don't accept your position. Speaking. Vis-a-vis mil-spec-ing.
Everett Speaking of German watches that are really cool, but maybe just not cool enough for me to want to spend my money on Stova. Stova makes... This is such a fucking cool watch. Stova makes a Flieger watch and Stova is one of the few companies that can make a Flieger watch and not have to ask anybody any permission because Stova is one of the original Flieger companies. They've been doing it since it's been done. That's right. Now, a Flieger watch, so a pilot watch or aviation watch or a Flieger is a watch that is supposed to do one thing really well, and that's legibility. The primary goal of a Flieger watch is legibility. 48 millimeters, buckets of loom, white dial, black text, easy to see,
Andrew Red light, white light, ambient light.
Everett What does a pilot not need? A pilot does not need murdered out super tactical DLC matte finishes.
Andrew Unless they're flying a stealth bomber.
Everett However, Stova has given us exactly that. And it should be stupid. And yet it's not. So they're calling this the Flieger Verus Black Forest Lagoon.
Andrew Because that's where you're going to crash into if you can't read your timepiece.
Everett This is a 40 millimeter Black Forest case from Stove-It. This is exactly what you'd expect, except that it's got a matte black DLC finish on the case. A matte black finish on the dial, black numerals and markers, and epic blue loom on the hands. And the date wheel. The date wheel and the triangle, the dot dot triangle at 12 o'clock. There's a good name for that? I'm sure there is. It's terrific. Your true north. It is terrific.
Andrew It's super good. It's, it's about as sexy as a watch gets. And in 40 millimeters, you're just like, here's my bitch. Okay. 50 meters of water resistance. Yep. Uh, three available movements though. And that's my excitement. You can get a automatic Sleeta 200, a top version Sleeta 200 or hand wound Sleeta 200. $1,000, $1,200, $1,240, respectively.
Everett And those are all good prices. They're all fine prices and it's 10-2, right? So it's nice and wearable. These things are really great. Uh, and this one's really cool. I don't have, I don't have, I don't really have a problem with this watch.
Andrew Everything about this watch I like besides the 50 meters of water resistance, but I accept it because it's a, It's a pilot watch, right? Like if you're getting wet, like things are bad enough that you don't need your watch anymore.
Everett Have you ever seen one of these in person? Uh, yes. The onion crowns on these are really, really nice.
Andrew Yeah. They, they do a thing. They, they put you from six to 12 pretty quick.
Everett The machining, the machining on these is fantastic. So.
Andrew So you've, you slurped one of my picks.
Everett Oh, well, take whatever you want. I think that was my last watch.
Andrew Where are we at right now?
Everett We are at 52. So you know what could be done?
Andrew Let's I'm OK. Not talking about any of the rest of my list.
Everett Well, can we just can we just say the Lorca Model 2 is awesome?
Andrew It is really good.
Everett The Tangente to date.
Andrew Terrific.
Everett Concur. The Fierce Brunswick Jump Hour. is outrageous and awesome.
Andrew It is the coolest thing Fears has ever done.
Everett The Christopher Ward, Seconde Seconde, C-65 Death Diver is absurd. And super fun. And super fucking fun. Um, and yeah, that's all I wanted to say.
Unknown All right.
Everett Oh, what? Let me just, let me just review. That's all the things.
Andrew That's all the things. You've honorably mentioned the things that I have deleted their tabs for and they're not going to get into the show notes.
Everett Great. We'll just say those things. The Christopher Ward Seconde Seconde super fun, a little stupid, but in a good way.
Andrew I am going to include the the fears. Jump power, though, because that thing is what?
Everett Yeah, that's right. Andrew, other things.
Andrew What do you got? So a couple of months ago, I saw this tile and it was Jeff Goldblum. The Fly. And I like that movie so much. And I'm just like, well, that's interesting. But it kind of like drives on. I'm like, oh, man, I'm excited to watch that. Yesterday, I'm sitting on the couch. And I'm like, man, I want to watch something different. I don't want my normal things. And I'm scrolling through my picks. And I saw this tile come up as like a new release, like releases for you. And it's called Chaos. K-A-O-S. And it is a modern-ish retelling of kind of a story of the Greek and Roman gods starring Jeff Goldblum as Zeus. which means this show is exactly what you expect it to be. It's got everyone you see, you recognize whether or not you actually recognize them. Like I find myself going to IMDb like, man, I know this person. And a lot of them I don't, but it's this perfect dark kind of dramedy retelling of the story of the Greek and Roman gods, not just rising to power, but kind of retaining their power, at least thus far in the show that I'm, that I'm at. Cause I haven't finished it. It's eight episodes. Uh, I think I'm in like four right now. It's terrific. They do this great job of like transplanting ancient geopolitics into relatively modern era, right? We're still like flip phones and nineties, uh, 90s cordless phones, which adds this like super fun kind of nostalgia to this new thing and makes it familiar, but all at once a new story that you're telling or that you're that you're seeing. It is a blast. It's well acted. It's super well written. It's really complex. But the way that the cinematography plays Everything makes sense. And you will understand that when you watch it. As, as, as like disfigured as the timeline is, everything makes sense. You, you're never lost. You're like always in the story and accepting the non-reality that you're existing in. It's, it's one of my favorite shows that I've watched, like new shows that I've watched. I don't know, in a good long while.
Everett Andrew, when you bring shows to the show very often, my first instinct is that they're trashy and usually that's right when I go and watch them. Oh, I love trash shows. This looks to me like it might not be trashy.
Andrew It's super fun. It's well acted. And the story is predictable insofar as like it's been told a hundred times. But this one's just got a little bit different flavor to it. A little bit different ring. I'm excited about this. I haven't heard of this. It's, it's good. I think it's on, no, it is on Netflix. I will, uh, I will check it out. And, and Jeff Goldblum is Zeus. Like he's just in a tracksuit constantly. Like imagining Zeus in a tracksuit is, is funny just by itself.
Everett I think Jeff Goldblum is going to turn into a Christopher Walken type where. He, like at some point people just accept, they're like, that guy's one of the coolest guys that's ever lived.
Andrew Cause he's the same guy. And I think it's because he's a terrible actor. He might not be a great actor. He's the same guy everywhere, but the roles that he picks.
Everett He just exudes charisma. They just fit. He's like, I'm going to be this, which is incredibly good looking, charming and charismatic. And that's it. Yeah. That's what I'm going to do this. I'm going to be a bad guy and I'm still going to do this. I'm going to be a good guy and I'm going to do this. I'm going to be an anti-hero. I'm going to do this. I'm going to be a hero. I'm going to do this. He's always the same.
Andrew Exactly. He's not acting. That's just who he is.
Everett Andrew, I needed a shop vac recently. And you didn't borrow mine. I had an old shop vac. It was really shitty. I think I bought this thing at Harbor Freight when we got our first So this would have been circa 2007. I ended up with ShopVac. I didn't have any money. Harbor Freight existed. I went to Harbor Freight. They had probably a $25 ShopVac. I got it. It was fine. It did the thing. It was fine. Okay. I've used this ShopVac now nigh on, what, what would that be? Uh, 17 years. Uh, and it's fine. It is fine. For what I need a shop vac for, it's fine. But shop vacs are not expensive.
Andrew They can be.
Everett They can be, but they're not really all that expensive. They don't need to be. And what I discovered is that my shitty Harbor Freight shop vac was not very good at cleaning the car. It just didn't suck quite enough.
Andrew Yeah. It's a common problem.
Everett It did not suck quite enough. And so I was like, you know, it's time. It's time, I'm going to get rid of the old shitty ShopVac. I'm going to get a newer, probably still shitty ShopVac, but just something that sucks a little bit better, more, sucks more. And less. And less. And so I started looking at like, what's the brand? ShopVac obviously is a brand.
Andrew I don't think anyone has a ShopVac, branded ShopVac.
Everett Well, ShopVac.
Andrew I don't know who, I've never seen one, but for, our independent school district.
Everett Yeah. I mean, you can buy shop vacs and they're good. Um, and there's all sorts of ranges, right? I want a plastic bodied, a home model, probably like a six or a 10 gallon, something like that. Not too big, but bigger than what I had. I think what I had was like a three and a half gallon, something a little bit bigger. That's going to suck a little bit more and less. Uh, so rigid came out as the brand that everybody's like, this is the one, the rigid shop vacs are awesome. And I went to Home Depot to buy this rigid shop vac, and they didn't have the one I wanted.
Andrew Oh, fuckers.
Everett And I almost bought a different one. And I was like, I'm gonna chill just a second. And so I went home and I did not buy anything. Isn't that weird? That is weird. I went to Home Depot.
Andrew I would expect you to just buy the most expensive one. The biggest one, like the 12 gallon shop vac. I was like, I'm never going to need more than this.
Everett This is the one I want, so I'll like order it or I'll do something, right? And so I go home and I start, I just read a little bit more and I start seeing reviews of Bauer's shop vacs. Now Bauer is a Home Depot brand that is sort of, it's not their top top, right? Hercules is their top top brand. It comes in, Bauer's stuff comes in just under Hercules stuff. But I start seeing these reviews of these Bauer shop vacs, plug-in, I'm not looking for a battery, a cordless. And people are saying, this is really, really good. This compares favorably to RIDGID or anything else you could buy, and they're cheap. So I was like, you know, roll them. Here we are 17 years later, maybe I'll just do it. So I went out and I bought a six gallon, four horsepower, wet, dry Bauer vacuum. You get it home. You've got to kind of put it together. It's not complicated. It's got to cut like these, these casters that you have to screw to it. A couple of other things. It's incredibly sturdy. The, Home Depot also now sells like a car kit, which is, I understand, a reproduction or a rep of RIDGID's car kit. And I was like, fuck it, I'll buy that. And I got this thing home. I put it together. Andrew, it's awesome. I don't know enough about shop vacs to be like, this is really good and it's as good as anything else. I've legitimately in my life never touched a RIDGID shop vac, so I don't know. But I got this thing home and I was like, there's nobody that spends 55 bucks on this thing that's going to be disappointed.
Andrew That's the one.
Everett It's awesome. I cleaned both cars. It did an admirable job with the extension, the hose extension that comes in the car kit. It was plenty long. It just sucks. It is a sucky item. And I mean that in the best possible way. Because 55 bucks lighter, I am as happy as a clam. I will own this thing until it breaks. I mean, hopefully that's at least 17 years from now. And I think it is gonna be. I think I'm gonna have this thing until I'm old.
Andrew I spent double on mine. And I imagine it does the same thing. I bought a DeWalt. like a nine gallon, but it's bigger, right? Like that was kind of the. Sure.
Everett And, and Bauer has a bunch of different sizes of shop vacs. So if you go to, let's just do this real quick. We'll go to shop power tools.
Andrew And at Harbor Freight, it's $55.
Everett Uh, yeah, that's right. That's right. So, so hold on. How do I do this? Shop. Do they have vacuums? They have power tools? They have vacuums and blowers?
Andrew Dry vacuums? Their 9 gallon is only $65 at Harbor Freight.
Everett So they've got a 16 gallon with like a big handle and all these like blah blah blah blah. And that's $140.
Andrew That is a it's got a like a drag handle like a generator.
Everett Yeah, that's right. I want to say that this thing is seven horsepower. 16 is oh gosh, it doesn't say the horsepower list six and a half peak horsepower. They've got a. A nine gallon four and a half peak 14 gallon. which is going to be six, and then the six gallon, which I bought, um, I got the small one and Andrew, I'm telling you, man, it's awesome. I love a good shop vac. It's awesome. It sucks. It really, really sucks. All of it. They also sell like OSHA compliant ones that like their Hercules 12 gallon is OSHA compliant. And I think it is like 300 bucks.
Andrew Yeah, but we don't need OSHA compliance.
Everett I don't need that, no. But I'm just saying, I think Harbor Freight turned the corner a few years ago, and they're selling competitive products.
Andrew Like actual shit, instead of just shit shit, like Chicago Electric.
Everett That's right. That was my first shop vac, that Chicago Electric one. And in its defense, I could plug that thing in right now and vacuum up a dirt pile completely effectively.
Andrew And then sweep it later.
Everett Andrew, anything else you want to add? I'm out of things, man. Well, good, because me too.
