Disclaimer

Due to the modern miracle of the Internet, incautious people from any location may now have a glimpse into the blinding tedium that is my life. Steel your soul for a look into a life more ordinary.

All that, and it's still free! "Life just keeps getting better and better."

Notes

As of 12/22/2000, image thumbnails are now image links, courtesy of the wonderful HTMLThumbnail utility. Hopefully this will make the pages much more useful.

Pictures

  • Roll one: Pictures from a family trip back to Idaho, May 2000.
  • "Roll" two Pictures from a funeral trip to Tulelake, CA, for the funeral for Violet Hurlburt. Sony Mavica FD digital camera, courtesy of Lee Paxton.
  • "Roll" three. Pictures from the weekend of June 16, 2000, with Sarah's spiffy new Olympus 460Z. See the cat! And other exciting homelife.
  • New 6/27/00

(All of these are, again, Kodak "Picture-CD" digitized from our generic 35mm camera)

  • Roll four: Pictures from the second roll of the Idaho trip. Schweitzer, babies and trampolines.
  • Roll five: Last roll shot in New Mexico. Some good pictures of ruins, both ours and Native American.
  • Roll six: First roll in DeKalb. Snow, unpacking, our nervous cat and a Brazilian friend shoveling snow. Caution, it's white-knuckle excitement here.
  • New 6/28/00

Pictures of the wedding of John Dykes and Tina Venditto, April 15, 2000. Olympus D360 digital camera. Note that this was our first extended use of a digital camera, so many of these have incorrect exposures and other glitches. It is so hard to get good help any more.

Both pages are quite large. You can fit a lot of 1.3 megapixel images on a chip with JPEG compression.

  • Here's the first 16MB chip
  • Here's the second chip, 8MB
  • New 8/21/00

Office pictures. Testing a cow-orkers' Kodak DC280 camera. Can we go any lower?

Note that these are outdated, and newer pictures can be found on the "Fermilab Tour" page, below.

  • One angle on the mess. Note the essential espresso machine and token stuffed penguin.
  • Another angle.
  • The Nun Versus the Alien. We have a verbal poll of office visitors as to who will win. The nun is waaay ahead, even after Dennis put a Cardinals hat on the alien.
  • New 10/5/00

I call this the scenic roll. Pics of Lake Pend d'Oreille in Idaho, Fermilab, and various vistas between DeKalb and Fermilab. Enjoy! Generic 35mm, Kodak Gold film, Kodak PictureCD processing.

  • I wanna see!
  • New 12/19/00

This is an oddball collection. Four pictures from Whitman, around 1990, of Matt Sabin and myself on the climbing wall. Then five pics from Idaho, early eighties, makes an odd collection.

These were digitized and HTML-ed by the courtesy of a co-worker, Miroslav Siket. Acer slide scanner, not sure about the camera or film. Note that the quarter-size images are manageable, but the full size images are about nine megabytes each!

  • It's an odd world. Be yourself at all times.
  • New 12/20/00

The second roll from Illinois. Visitors, babies, RAID cases, nighttime Fermilab, hiking on the Mississippi river, pretty riveting stuff here.

Lousy Kirkland film in the 35mm, Kodak Picture CD processing. That's the last time I buy film at Costco.

  • DeKalb 2
  • Christmas Pictures

Christmas 2000 in DeKalb. Pictures takes with the new Canon S100 digital camera, clipped with xv, and a couple of contrast adjustments done with gphoto.

  • Happy Holidays
  • Fermilab / CDF Tour

Shot in December '00, this is a badly-photographed tour of bits of Fermilab, mostly CDF and Wilson Hall. Also includes the newer office pictures, CDF detector, etc, etc.

  • Lab Tour Ho!
  • AMS 2000 in New Orleans

January 9-14 in New Orleans for the AMS meeting. I went to see Ingrid Daubechies, the original wavelet goddess. Pictures from the Canon S100 digital, full resolution, medium compression, with scaling and rotation done with xv.

A trip to the CSO, our new MP3 box, and the amazing scenery of Sunset over A Parking lot.

    AMS Tuscon Winter School

Chris's trip to the AMS Tuscon winter school on algebraic geometry. Personally, it makes me miss the southwest.

  • Old Albuquerque pictures

Found these while digging for backups - pictures from our house in New Mexico, circa 1996 or so. (The timestamps are 1996, but I'm not at sure that's correct.) This is generation-one digital - a borrowed Sony VGA-resolution Mavica with really awful artifacts, pixel bloom, etc.

  • Albuquerque 9x
  • February, 2001, Feynmann Computing Center, Fermilab

Geek paradise: hardware everywhere. Geeks pictured are Glenn Cooper and Richard Jetton, calm and confident in the knowledge that they have the root passwords to most every machine in sight.

  • Feynman Computing center
  • First flight: 2/01/01

Resuscitated from backups, we have Paul's first flight lesson. DeKalb airport, Piper PA28-161, much fun was had by all. Edited down for size and number of pictures.

  • August pictures
  • August 2001 Favorites

I selected a few pictures from throughout the website that I thought were particularly well done, and put up a web page. It's not art, but you might like some of them.

A perfect March day in Nashville, for the Hindu wedding of a good friend.

  • The wedding
  • Garden pictures 5/15/04

A truly trivial posting - six pictures of our garden.

Then again, we did put a lot of effort into planting bulbs last fall, so its explicable, if not defensible.

  • Garden pictures
  • Sarah's Birthday, June 04

A lovely visit to Missouri, for Sarah's birthday. Managed to get some really nice sky pictures coming back on routes 39 and 88, courtesy of a large storm cell passing through.

  • UCLA July 04

A rather cool visit to help out at UCLA for my day job. They have an office building that was damaged in the 94 quake, and have instrumented it to the gills.

Have a look, it's much cooler than it sounds.

  • UCLA trip

    13WCEE demo prep

A 3-day visit to UIUC to prep the hardware and software for the 13th world conference on earthquake engineering in August.

  • Fall Walkabout 10/23/04

It was too nice to stay instead, so I took a walk up and down the river. The pictures came out well, but my idiot self misread the camera configuration, so they're all low-res. (VGA, 640x480). At least they load super fast.

  • Fall walkabout
  • Second fall walkabout 10/29/04

I finally decoded the resolution change magic on the camera; you have to hold a button on the left side while rotating a dial on the upper right back. Really.

Alas, the light is worse, and so are the compositions, but at least they're full-sized.

  • Second walkabout
  • Pittsburgh and DC 11/17/04

Supercomputing and the NEESGrid grand opening in DC. Some nerdy, some touristy, some just plain boring.

  • Nerd trip
  • Nieces and Nephews and weekend, oh my

We ended up with the kids for a weekend. 18 months and 4 years, respectively. Well mannered, well behaved kids that nontheless left us non-parental types rather tired. Good pictures, though.

  • Singapore May 2005

  • Singapore trip
  • Japan Aug 2005

Some work trips are better than others. Case in point - 5 days in the Kobe area, with a side trip to Kyoto. Life is good.

  • Japan pics
  • Salt Lake City, Aug 2005

This would be an example of a less-fun work trip. I spent a week of 12+ hour days under an overpass in Utah, with frequent freight trains. By the end, I was ready to order the box set of Boxcar Willy.

  • Salt Lake City pics
  • Flying over Chicago, 9/17/05

Posted 11/26, so a bit of delay. Ben had never been up in a small plane, so we took the Archer over downtown and the waterfront. A gorgeous day for flying.

  • The Big Move Feb 06

Actually, the move itself was October 2005; I seem to have a bit of a delay on this one. An unsorted lot of before/during/after/roadtrip pics. I mean, who wouldn't take a picture of the alien jerky sign?
